Hurricane Melissa could affect 1.5 million people in Jamaica alone, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said, warning of a “massive impact”.
Hopefully this doesn’t have a large scale effect 🇯🇲🙏🏻

From windy.com now.
Cat 5, wind at 185 mph. Just hope all are hunkered down and as safe as they can be.

It's awful what this could do and that the frequency and scale of these is increasing so much.
I saw the after effects of Hurricane Beryl a year or so ago on Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines as I have family there. When I visited a year before it hit I volunteered with a project on the small island of Mayreau. Most of my time was spent on a coral restoration project but they also did a huge amount with the local community (only 600 people live on the island). Sadly much of that was destroyed when Beryl hit and they've spent the last year trying to rebuilt.
Melissa appears to be both more powerful and on a path towards a much more populous area which is concerning. Can only hope something changes before it makes ground.0 -
On the tv earlier there was talk of between 30 and 40 inches of rain, that is a frightening amount of water. As the atmosphere warms, clouds can carry more moisture and therefore drop more rain. A taste of what is to come as climate change takes a hold.
I hope that everyone stays safe.1 -
Get used to it. Climate change = warmer oceans = more intense and longer storms1

Was on Jamaica last week and due to return today. We were in the hotel the BBC has been interviewing Rebecca Chapman from. Luckily we picked up what was happening on Thursday and changed our flight to Saturday so got out before it all kicked off. It was possibly the last flight to the UK from Montego Bay airport. We were so lucky and pleased to have done it.
The Jamaicans we met were so blasé about the hurricane as they don't get hit that often by serious ones - only 1952 and 1988 - so were expecting just to ride it out.
Fingers crossed all people there are safe and damage is limited.4 -
Wife's friend currently out there with her family. Sounds horrific.0

We’re in the line of fire for this on Thursday night into Friday morning, but by that time it will/should be quite severely weakened. Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, the southern islands of The Bahamas, and Turks and Caicos are going to see the full effects unfortunately. Hoping for the best, but fearing the worst.0

Yep, we’re pretty well suited for these kinds of things. Everything’s concrete and stone. We lose power usually, sometimes for an extended time and there’s always clean up, but generally it’s ok.3

Seeing as we have 4 internationals from Jamaica, should the club do a collection on Saturday?0
