Hull City vs Charlton Athletic
Saturday 25th October 2025 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Andrew Kitchen

Introduction
Do we dare to start dreaming, when do we possibly start to realise that the dizzy heights of the Championship, where we currently find ourselves, is where we're here to stay for the season? - To be honest I doubt many Charlton fans will care about the overall outcome of the League season, not in the October time at least. But Nathan Jones in the last twelve months has allowed us to dream. Tuesday night, and I had the craziest one of them all, we beat Ipswich in their own backyard... Its a dream I don't want to wake from, not just yet!!

The Opposition
Name: Hull City (6th) - Manager: Sergej Jakirović
Ground: The KC Stadium
Previous League Result: Hull 2-1 Leicester

I imagine that there are plenty in the Division at the moment who never dreamt that they'd find themselves in the position they're in. For starters, the top six doesnt contain a single team relegated from the Premier League last season, nor does it contain the losing Play-Off Finalists from last season... This Saturday we travel to Hull City, this should come the end of the season, be a game that we look back on as a relegation six pointer... Instead, as things stand... It could be a Play-Off six pointer

What is going on, you hear me wonder? - Well Hull City are lucky to even be in the Championship this season, and not in a positive way... The survived the drop to League One by the slimmest of margins, staying in the Championship purely on Goal Difference, a solitary point on the final day of the season was the difference between playing in the second or the third tier in the 2024/25 season, a solitary goal from Portsmouth... Well we could have been facing a trip to Luton Town this weekend instead... Fine margins.

So as a result of Hull's outcome last season, I doubt anyone in Yorkshire expected to see them in the dizzy heights of 6th... But that is exactly where Manager: Sergej Jakirović has guided them so far... Wait... WHO? - Sergej Jakirović, not exactly the most well known of Football Managers is from Bosnia, and has spent much of his career, both as a Centre-Back when as a player, and as a manager in Eastern Europe, with sides who'd get you a pretty score in Scrabble to say the least. Unsurprisingly this is his first stint in England, and it couldn't be going much better; in terms of individuals and its Oli McBurnie who'll be one to watch, the ex-Swansea and Sheff Utd Striker has six goals and three assists to his name this term, and could be a key figure for the hosts, despite being absent from their win over Leicester on Tuesday night.

Charlton Team News
Tuesday night naturally saw changes to the line-up with Kayne Ramsay and Tanto Olaofe returning to the starting eleven... With two away games in quick succession we could see those changes swapped round, meaning that its likely we'll see Reece Burke and Tyreece Campbell from the start of the game once more.

However those changes will no doubt have given Nathan Jones a small, but welcome, headache. Does he continue to keep things fresh and possibly start with the strikers that ended the win at Ipswich on Tuesday night. If he does that then we'll see Tyreece Campbell and Miles Leaburn from the start, or does he avoid the temptation all together, and give the two summer signings another chance to improve their own partnership with Tanto Olaofe and Charlie Kelman once again picked from the start.

Thankfully it does seem as though no further injuries were picked up from the trip to Suffolk, so the rest of the twenty man squad should be pretty predictable.

Kaminski
Burke - Jones - Gillesphey
Bree - Coventry - Docherty - Bell
Carey
Olaofe - Kelman

Substitutes: Mannion - Ramsay - Apter - Costello - Hernandez - Knibbs - Berry - Campbell - Leaburn

Not sure if I’m becoming deluded or getting carried away now but I fancy us in this one. 1-0 to the rip roaring clean sheet keeping addicks!

Unlikely to be able to watch which is annoying. We need to look out for their fullbacks who are very creative and Lloyd Jones will be heading away a lot of long balls. Whoever is first to the second balls most often will win this
  • Couldnt find anything about McBurnie's absence on Tuesday night - But be ideal if he's missing again after his decent start to the season. Can see this being a proper banana skin of a fixture after Tuesday night.

I don't think Nathan will change the starting 11, but we may see TC, Miles, and his Knibbs on a little earlier than we did on Tuesday.  It will need to be a similar backs to the wall first half performance I think; if we can keep it tight then we have a chance of nicking it. But...

    After the Lord Mayor's Show?

According to fotmob mcburnie is injured along with their 6 assist left back Giles
  • I think it will be a sterner test than Ipswich. Hull are in good form, Ipswich are definitely not.
  • 2-1 to the Addicks. Tough game.

This is going to be a tough, tough game, and I can see us losing it 2-0.

They were at home Tuesday, we've had to travel twice.

I see a few former Addicks in their squad although only Ajayi and Famewo were in the matchday squad in their last game. Could one of them come to haunt us?

If McBurnie is out that would be a big plus for us. However I see Hull very much like Charlton, a bunch of hard grafters with a sprinkling of good talent, They just beat Leicester, although we just beat Ipswich. Both of us in great form, so not going to get carried away and see this being a score draw.

You’re forgetting Liam Millar who scored for them on Tuesday

  • Ive never heard of Oli McBurnie, but in my my minds eye he is a far flung customer of Postman Pat and lives in Greendale.  I'm not worried about him.

My heart says a win ... and so does my head. 1 0 to the Londoners.

They are in form and surprising people. Take a point all day long. Still basking in the wake of Tuesday night. Might see Miles start this one up top with Kelman. Head says 1-1. Heart says 0-1 Kelman. UTA

I think after pumping Ipswich by 3 at home will soften the travelling issues quite a bit, no way am I backing against our team after Tuesday night at least a point coming our way.

Think we’re going to win this one, Hull’s strengths are getting down the line and putting crosses into the box, one thing we can do is defend our area game which should hopefully suit our style

Last time we played back to back away games we didn't rotate and ended up looking pretty leggy. I'm not sure who i'd drop but our central midfielders covered a lot of ground against Ipswich and I doubt they can be that effective twice in 4 days.

Throughout the summer I thought Hull would be a gonner, nailed on to go down with sheffield wednesday as they were under a transfer embargo weren't they and ownership issues? maybe its just a case of the owner being a tit but not really sure whats gone on since but theyve suprised me thats for sure. I'm maybe a little over confident for this one however, i wouldn't mess around with the lineup at all. i do wonder at what point do coventry and docherty get a rest because they run themselves into the ground every single game. I wouldnt start Burke because tbh i dont really rate him over the other three defenders we've got but do get its a team game and rotation does matter. Anyway, 1-0 to charlton with kelman hopefully getting off the mark because I think he deserves a goal as hes been working so hard.

    Edit: Great preview btw :)

Tough ask 2 away games on the bounce.

A solid but unspectacular performance after our heroics on Tuesday.

    1-1

Same starting eleven for me. Ramsay was back to being a Rolls-Royce defender on Tuesday so no need to rotate for Burke. TC and Leaburn off the bench again at 60 minutes. Kelman to get his first goal in a 2-1 win

Ramsay has to start, Jones and Gillesphy have been great, but both aren't exactly blessed with pace, Ramsey gives the backline a much-needed injection of pace to cover shown in the fantastic last ditch tackle against Ipswich
  • Absolutely no idea. Thought Ipswich would have too much for us and didn’t and Hull at home should start favourites I suppose. Be quite happy with a point to be honest.

I'm torn between a bullish view of 0-2 Charlton and the league starts to adjust their view of us .... or a score draw.

I don't think we will lose.

I'll also remind everyone that we should have beaten Millwall and Leicester.

Hull have had increased attendances since 2022 and the takeover - this year average is still over 21k so the vibes will be up.

Jones tactically is very strong - We are better when teams are coming at and trying to break us down - We are also better as the underdog - but that may have to change if we continue our good form.

    hmmmm - A high scoring win -

    Hull 2-3 Charlton

    Kelman 2 - 22, 61
    TC - 78

    I just don't know anymore. I'll go with 0-0 or a 0-5 win.

My Charlton supporting trauma is giving me a nagging feeling that it may be a repeat of the Preston game, but this team consistently surprises me. If we can get a point that will make an excellent return from two tough away games on the bounce.

Ramsay has to start. They have Gelhardt and Millar out wide who look to get in behind, are quick, and carry the ball well. We need Ramsay to cover for Bree who has shown to be a good outlet on the right with his delivery and positional knowledge.

It’ll be tough making any changes from Tuesday night and a win like that means they recover, at least mentally, far better than usual. Everyone will want to be apart of this weekend and having a full week before the next game is nice.

We might see one change, but personally think that we worked so well as it was on Tuesday that you have to trust they’ll be able to go again.

TC and Leaburn looked fantastic off the bench, I think that kind of threat coming on, that pace and presence is hard for opponents. Keep it the same.

Going to be a hard game, but one thing that I haven’t seen mentioned is that Hull give up a lot, and I mean a lot, of chances. They’ve conceded 19 this season and xG has them to have conceded 22. If we keep things tight, do the basics very well, there is opportunity to really hurt them on transition.

The Addicks to make it 3 wins on the spin and we move up to 3rd.

Only Sheffield Wednesday have conceeded more goals than Hull so far this season.

The flipside to that is that only Coventry have scored more than them.

If we keep it tight, we have a chance.
