South stand terrace

There are a few FB pages discussing old terracing back in the the day.

Arguments debating who had the bigger side terrace between CAFC Chelsea Hibs and Birmingham. Which I think we would win the argument with pics available of all the terraces mentioned.

I then see discussions who had the bigger ends (play nice!) and you see the usual suspects Villa Sheffield Wed and Liverpool but what about The Valley South terrace?

I have seen 1 or 2 photos of it but never a pic of it when it was at full capacity. Would we be in the mixer with these discussions?

Found this photo on line dated 1920, can't confirm accuracy of date of course, but East Terrace is well known as being immense, South Terrace was not as high, but not sure of capacity...?
  • The open end, once upon a time, used to go back further before they sold off a bit at the back but I would have thought Stamford Bridge would have had a bigger capacity at the Shed end simply because the dog track would have meant the curve would have made it a lot wider, end to end of that section, than the straight terracing behind the goal at The Valley.

That is 1971 if I remember correctly plus the floodlights are there and the top of the south has been lopped off.

I would love to see a pic of the South terrace in the 30/40s square on so you could see it in all its glory.

From the photos posted by @stockportaddick I would estimate the South Terrace as follows:

    Ground record capacity 75,000
East Terrace could hold 40,000 at a push
Covered End was low level single tier - maybe 8,000 (standing) but that's a guess.
West - two very low level terraces either side of the wooden shack we called the grandstand! Total West side maybe 6,000.
That leaves about 20,000 capacity for South terrace - there won't have been many ends that big! That makes sense as it looks as high as the East but half the length.

That is much later than 1920

Covered End was built 1934 and east and south terraces extended 1936.

    Floodlights date it after 1962

Pretty sure it was the Holte, see below! I think the South Bank at Wolves went further back but wasn't that deep the whole width so had a lower capacity. The Kop was big but no where near the size of the monster ends (may have had smaller steps as well?). It was famous for always being packed and noisy. Hampden (the non-Rangers End) held about 60k!

The Heights end at The Valley was only a rew steps shorter than the East so would have been a monster. 85%ish of the capacity would have been From those 2 stands. What could have been...

This debate flares up on-line every few weeks it seems.

The East Terrace is always talked about, sometimes in excess of its actual size, and then someone will jump in with "what about the end". General discussion goes Holte End Villa Park, South Bank Molineux, South Terrace Valley. All others dismissed, but generally Holte End wins.

And just for clarification...Chelsea, Hibs and Birmingham aren't in the mix...

Not the South Terrace, but a great view of the East Terrace when only the bottom half was built, overlooking the uncovered end.

Wow hadn’t realised how big the Holte End used to be

It’s The Heights, not the South Terrace - and my (sadly no longer with us) Dad, told me is was enourmous (before they sold off the top of it) to - I understand - Valiant House
