Certainly not a 'must win' game yet

edited August 2007 in General Charlton
in my book, but i reckon the pressure will be firmly cranked on Pardew and the players if we don't get three points on Saturday.

Sheff W are bottom of the league, no points, and 7 goals conceded in 2 two games, and both their main strikers (Jeffers and Tudgay) are likely to be out injured.

The following away game will certainly be a pressure one, and we really don't want to be going into it without a win under our belts.

Is that too harsh or not?

After last season, I really hate that expression - please ban it!
  • I am sure Pards regards every game as a pressure must win game, I am confident things will start going our way soon.
  • Aye, remember OPERATION KNEE-JERK at Craven Cottage after half a dozen games? Must win this, must put a run together now etc.
Win, lose or draw on Saturday, I still have confidence that we'll be top 4 at the end of the season. We have the players and the right man in charge.
  • Whilst its naturally not "must win" yet in terms of points, I agree with AFKA that it's already taken on huge psychological significance. Important to keep the feel good factor alive at The Valley, and create awe in opponents based on both stats and atmosphere. Quite apart from the thought of going to Croydon with no wins on board, we really can't afford for visiting teams to believe they need only put up a strong rearguard action to nick a point or more.
  • We'll be fine.

Bring Zheng in the middle, start with Mcleod and big Chris.

Fortune in the middle and Chris Powell left back.

3-1 as Jeffers is bound to score.
  • drop ambrose ffs, he can play in the Carling cup...

    ;)
  • Is this a Spurs board I've come across?

Must win? do me a favour!
  • you clearly missed the bit that said 'certainly not a'

though i do think a lot of people have forgot that we are meant to be going for promotion this season, not fighting off relegation again.
  • We'll get the results we need, the quality is more or less there in the team, so it's just a matter of time before it clicks.

But the one way to really screw everything up is to put the team under such ridiculous pressure, when in reality at this stage of the season there should be none.

If on Saturday we react to the slightest mistake with huge negativity, then that's worth a goal start to Sheff Wed.
    Can't people see that?

Why don't we just get behind them, create a fantastic atmosphere and actually SUPPORT the team?!

  • most of us do.

i'd rather get my concerns out on here during the week, than in the ground on matchdays.
  • i think we are too good to go down.
  • We should be safe this year
  • there's no such thing as a must win game in this division...

If we lose on Saturday to such a team whose own supporters have a mindset of a Charlton winning easily, l then I won't be able to share your confidence and quite frankly would then feel that we don't deserve to be in the top 4.
So if we lost on Saturday and then won the next 10 games we still wouldnt deserve it?

Some people really need to get a grip, two league games gone with the majority of players who have NEVER played in this division before. I know it's being said a lot but give it time. It's the nature of football for managers to be put under pressure when expectation levels are so high, but as Charlton fans we shouldnt increase this pressure after 2/3 games, its bloody ridiculous.

We've had 4% of the league season so beleive it or not we may still do well.
  • All the years I've supported Charlton I've merely hoped to avoid relegation, probably because in my very first season we narrowly avoided going down to the old division 3 by goal average havving beaten Southampton and Walsall in our final two games.

They say what happens to you in childhood shapes your attitudes in later life!

Anything better than that is then a nice bonus!

I think this will be a hard division to get promoted from although in Pardew we have about the best bloke within our budget to give us a decent shot at it.
  • do think what i've said has been twisted a little
