  • Pity,  good performance just gotta score.

I was on holiday for the Watford game so it was great to be back at the Valley for the first time this season. And the match had everything except the right result. We were denied by a wonder save at their end and a wonder strike at ours. If we can keep performing like that, we're going to surprise and do damage to quite a few of the fancied teams in this division.

Took me over 3 hours - twice the usual time - to get home, thanks to a shitshow on the M25 and all the bank holiday traffic finding the same alternative routes.

QPR will surely have a reaction to today's tonking and I reckon their professional pride will force an improvement, but we still have a great chance to grab an away win next week.

A reminder that TC had 1 assist all of last season in League One.

He's obviously there for his goal scoring ability rather than his chance creation but is that enough? Especially when he's been limited in his goal scoring positioning so far in these first 3 games and forced to attempt to create chances more often.
I think he’s there for his work rate off the ball, his pressing and the fact he often brings two players to him and creates space elsewhere. He’s a player who is about a lot more than his production stats
But we need him to contribute with goals and assists, none of our strikers will hit double figures and I’m not sure we can expect our defence to get 15 goals between them again this season.
Not many strikers got over 10 goals last season in the Championship anyway

Edit: maybe a bit OTT but 11 strikers with 11+ goals isn’t a huge amount
My point is our other strikers combined, will barely get as many as Godden did last season and we can’t expect the defence to score 15 again. If Campbell wants to be starting he needs to contribute with goals - Olaofe will also press and create space for others.

29 players hit double figures last season…
Exactly that 11 strikers with 11 plus goals isn't a huge amount but it's still having a striker with 11 plus goals we are 3 games In and a striker hasn't scored yet early days but you want a striker like that, this league isn't a piece of piss the goals are worth more that's wh you need that quality can't rest on your laurels.
Unsure why he specifically mentions 11+ goals as well. 20 strikers made double figures, the rest were wingers and CAMs.

As much as I like the squad, we don’t have anybody in any position that is likely to hit double figures so the goals will have to be spread around. TC has to contribute to that if he is going to start games.
  • The Leicester goalkeeper was outstanding, as indeed was Choudhury in their defence. I was impressed with how Charlton played and the commitment shown might be enough to keep us up. It will be interesting to see who the "one extra player" Jones intends to sign will be. Looking back, I can't help but think that Powell in 2012-2013 and Bowyer in 2019-2020 both had slightly stronger squads. We don't (yet) have a Kermogant type striker, and haven't brought in on loan players of the calibre of Gallagher and Cullen.
Agree about the Leicester keeper. All I can say is having watched the West Ham game last night, they have spent £20 million on the wrong Leicester keeper!

That was purely because I'd said over 10, no attempt to cherry pick.

I agree that the goals will need to be spread around, I guess I was just saying that not all teams have strikers who will hit double figures and thats ok. We have 5 senior strikers plus players like Knibbs, Carey and Berry who can score goals as well as our defenders at set pieces. I think we will spread the goals around fine

Thought TC was lightweight, same in the Watford game, if there’s no sentimentality then think he shouldn’t start, maybe be brought on in the later stages.

Think Tanto would have offered more and surprised Jones didn’t start him with Leaburn and equally why it took Jones so long to make the substitution.

I think lack of goals may be an issue but recognise Godden to come back and hopefully Kelman and Knibbs both get up to speed sooner rather than later.

  • Our current “shot conversion rate” after three games is 2.5% (40 shots taken, 1 goal).

The lowest rate across all 24 teams last season was 8.4%. The season before it was 7.8%. We could have scored 3 from 3 and still be behind the lowest rate across 48 teams the last two years.

It’d have to be going some to continue to scoring at such a pitiful rate. The chances will start turning into goals soon.
I'm not worried yet, as on another day we'd have won that game today. I have to admit i'll start to get a bit worried if we don't score against a very poor QPR team next week though. They've given up 47 shots in 3 games and conceded 10.
  • We need Godden back - badly
TC needs a lucky break to restore his confidence cos his season is already starting to look bleak

Daylight robbery helped by a useless ref.
Was it a blood injury for Ramsay? Seemed the ref wanted the trainers on but Kayne wanted to play on to defend the corner. Then the fuckwit played on for at least a minute before he waved KR on.

And the gullability for blowing every time they fell over.
  • Have no idea how anyone can mark Campbell as, 7, 7.5 and 8, what game were you at?

    Yes it was...

My bold prediction, on that performance, we’ll beat QPR and Millwall
On today’s result, yes to QPR, however I take beating the spanners 🔧.
    Let’s be realistic!

We win that 3 - 0 on another day. I feel frustrated with the result but not the team because everyone played well. Leaburn was imperious and won everything in the air, Doch and Cov responded to criticism with two outstanding performances, Jones was excellent and would make a decent striker at a lower level... everyone was good.

(I will say, having defended Kelman recently, he annoyed me today. He came on with fresh legs and walked around the pitch).

And while we do have a lot of athleticism in the final third, we're lacking class and quality. We have a tendency to panic and snatch at things.

But I can't be displeased because if we keep playing like that, we'll do well.
I must have watched a different game as I didnt see Leaburn win much in the air at all. Expect more in the air from someone supposedly 6ft 6.
Seriously? He won nearly everything in the air.
I think Golfie dozed off after his lunch and dreamed the whole game.

  • Just back from that, but agree with most of the comments that it was a very strong and encouraging performance.

I’ve been very critical of Doherty, but he was excellent today.

The biggest embarrassment was the covered end booing and abusing the Leicester set piece coach at full time. Clearly nobody recognised him as Andy Hughes. He was upset walking down the tunnel, as he was trying to applaud the fans, who have seemingly forgotten what a great pro he was in his short time at Charlton.
Are you sure the booing was aimed at him? The only booing I noticed was aimed at the ref as we walked off.
100%. I sit next to the tunnel, the ref was long gone, and Hughes was getting dogs abuse for waving at the crowd.

I recognised him instantly, so was really surprised that the north lower didn’t. Especially as he spent most of his career warming up in that corner.

We're talking nearly 10-12 years ago now though, wonder if some of the younger fanbase genuinely don't recognise him and saw him as a member of the opposition taunting the Covered End.

Was a great pro for us though, I remember him being interviewed after a game possibly the Sheff Wed game that we won in the FA Cup (Powell on the crossbar) and he could only stand there and praise the team / youngsters.
Very fair…I had much better view of him from my seat. If I was in the covered end I might have even been calling him a silly sausage as well.

Agreed, I really enjoyed his professionalism in his time here. I’ve still never seen a sub warm up with his energy. It was unreal.

Lack of killers in front of goal are going to hurt us this season
Could have had Fred West up front, their keeper just wasn’t being beaten today.
If we did, the police might take an interest in the memorial garden 💀
  • Great performance. Progress. We will probably play worse and win this season. UTA

Play like that every game and you win more than you lose.

    Keep the faith
    By not scoring?
Goals will come squire, Keep the faith my little Welsh friend
  • Feel gutted for the the Charlton players after playing so well but welcome to the Championship because there will be some quality finishing from the opposition despite how well we defend.

Win, draw and a loss, yet we looked stronger today and Coventry and Docherty were excellent in midfield. A better weighted pass from Miles and Doch was free.
Coventry had three good chances today so he's not a static number 6.

Plenty of positives but nil points. Leicester won by using the Charlton tactics of getting their goal and then blocking nearly every shot or else the keeper saving.

We had a strong mentality and kept trying to create.

The ref was correct with the two fouls from the corners. Docherty tried the same tactic as the block against Watford, unfortunately the ref had seen the highlights and knew it was coming. I believe Edwards did the other block foul.

We had 41 touches in the opposition box so we need someone to step up. The last person you wanted the headed chance to fall to was TC.
