First South London winners of the "Charity shield"!

The Charity Shield - and its other names, "Community Shield" and "Sheriff of London Charity Shield" - has been a traditional curtain-raiser to the season.  So it's interesting to see which South London clubs can claim to be the first to win it.

In 1902-03, Corinthian FC, who played their games at the Crystal Palace, beat Sunderland 3-0 at the Crystal Palace. So, congratulations to Corinthian, who thereby became the first south London team to win the trophy.  However, Corinthian's chequered history of "ownership", name, home venue and more requires a further search, to find a south London based team who won the title and who currently still play at the same ground.

In 1948 the Charity Shield was not played, with restrictions and the economic situation of the country still affected by the war.  However, to determine the winner that year, one has only to look at that season's matches between the FA Cup winners and the League champions.  Liverpool were the champions and suffered defeat 2-0 away and 3-2 at home, for an aggregate of 5-2 to FA Cup winners Charlton.

So, should any other south London team win the trophy, they cannot claim to be south London's first winners:, however much they might like the idea of re-writing their history. The debate about that title belongs, firmly and squarely between Corinthian FA and Charlton.

The Charlton Athletic Women's team has won the FA Women's Charity Shield (now called the FA Women's Community Shield) twice. They shared the trophy with Arsenal in 2000 after a 1-1 draw, and they won it outright in 2004, defeating Arsenal 1-0.
The Charlton Athletic men's team has never won the FA Charity Shield (now known as the FA Community Shield). They did not participate in the competition at any point in its history- think I read somewhere they decided to protest it. 🙄
