Eynesford Yalding - though might be pushing the hour limit West Malling Bearstead
I would give West Malling a swerve, nothing village like about it now with four barbers, charity shops and nail bars.
Avoid Eynesford, used to be decent - but not for some years.
The tiny stretch of river is always filled with dirge and scourge.
Yes I had the privilege of witnessing Kent’s finest there last year. The river was full of chavy kids misbehaving including harassing the ducks while the overweight, tattooed parents sat on the grass drinking completely ignoring them.
Looking for the CL hive mind to come up trumps please. After all the fantastic excitement of today, we’re thinking of a nice quiet Sunday in the countryside.
Would welcome thoughts please of villages worth visiting within an hour or so of Greenwich on public transport?
Do you mind me asking where you decided to go?
So in the end we decided it was a bit hot for a long trip (I’m half Scottish after all) so instead we did a big walk around Greenwich Park - rose garden, flower garden, queen’s orchard etc - topped off with a couple of lovely cool drinks in The Plume!
But thank you for the good ideas which are now stored up for future.
To be honest, that's what I would've recommended anyway. Love Greenwich Park.
Sevenoaks and Knole Park a great option. Otford decent too. You could go to Richmond maybe Ham House and/or the park. If you booked a cab from Borough Green station you could go to Ightam Mote (3miles).
Bit too far out for you - but I highly recommend Arundel for a nice day out. It's about 90 minutes from Victoria (or was when I last checked) and is a lovely place. I considered moving there a few years ago, but it's bloody expensive, unfortunately

I wouldn’t go there myself and I only live across the field in Farningham. Apparently there’s rubbish left just where people have sat down by the river. Those brave enough to go there can be assured of the views of people crossing the bridge getting a bucket of river water through their car window.
There has been one of those new dispersal orders brought into force over busy weekends for antisocial behaviour but I don’t know if it’s working.

100%, such a shame as it was a lovely spot to take the kids or just sit and enjoy a drink
Most places in Kent (unless they're along the North Kent line or down to Sevenoaks if you go from Lewisham) are a pain in the arse to get to from Greenwich by public transport, certainly not doable within an hour, and the fares cost a fortune. It's the "why don't more people get public transport to The Valley" argument, but in reverse.
Opposite end of London but Amersham is surprisingly doable on public transport in an hour and a very nice spot. Historic pubs and a real country feel to bits of it.
You're talking up to two hours rather than one, but this part of the world's a good call - never been to Old Amersham, but there's some lovely walks in the country around Chesham/Little Chalfont: https://www.chilterns.org.uk/map_marker/chess-valley-walk/
Bonus is that it's all on the Metropolitan Line (fast trains from Marylebone to some stations) and within the zones, so all on Oyster/contactless and free for some lucky folk.

I can't personally vouch for it, but others I know like it... Leigh-on-Sea is doable in about 90 minutes (DLR from Greenwich to Limehouse or Stratford, then direct train) and doesn't have the pisstake rail fares that the Kent coast has. May be a bit busy on a sunny Sunday though.
Either that or Downe (and Down House) or Westerham (and Chartwell) via three buses, but that'll be about 90 minutes too and a bit of an epic trip. Certainly doable with a bit of patience, though.
Or bin off the idea of leaving London and get the Northern Line to Hampstead. P4 bus from Lewisham to Dulwich Village will drop you off at the Picture Gallery. Richmond is quite villagey (watch for Ted Lasso fans). Or just walk to Blackheath Village.
Some great bars, restaurants along the waterfront in Leigh-on-Sea. So easy to get to on the DLR/Jubilee to West Ham & then 30 minutes on the C2C. Often meet with a friend from Upminster and go there, usually at The Peterboat and strolling round front.

Yet another place to avoid due to inbred wankers
