I am sure that's where he will play during the season, not because we have played a 5 back all year and are in a transitional state.
A 2.5 million pound winger will not be defending for us this season. He will be mainly playing forwards. Ramsay will be his cover and we will play heavy on a single side, very, very common football strategy.
Then out of defence we will keep a shape, but he won't be an actual right wing back, as he isn't that player and has never played that role.
It's a really weird way to present yourself online, IMO
If people don't like my views, that's on them, I have said about a million times people interpret texts how they want them, I never have these issues face to face, always online arguments/disagreements (and only on this site in all honesty) where people can't seem to detect tone.
I don't go round quoting everything I disagree with and saying "that's wrong" etc. I would have quadruples my posts otherwise.
I've said how I believe we will play, if I am wrong and in the season Apter turns into Dumfries good for him, works for me.3 -
Braziliance said:Bostonaddick said:No need to get on Braziliances case, we are all supporters of the same club (well except for Gisappointed) just giving opinions on a forum. My gut feeling is that Jones is going to initially go with the same formation at the end of last year with Apter just replacing small. Apter being the more attacking wingback and Edwards the more defensive with the formation flexing between a traditional 352/532 out of possession and a 4231 in possesion with Ramsey sliding over as cover when Apter pushes forward
A traditional wing back is someone like Hakimi, Dumfries etc who are actual full backs but also thrive in attack/developed, Apter is a winger by trade who will be part of a disciplined formation but will not offer the defensive qualities of a Kayne or Thierry or Edwards. He has been signed for his attacking qualities, not defensive, imo.
I also agree with Marcus and think he will be used as a 10 potentially, basically anywhere that allows him to try and create something.
A lopsided 532 is extremely different to a standard 532, that's the point I am trying to make.
Everyone replying to you was saying that Small’s role was basically a winger and that Apter would be fine based on how he played at Blackpool. We were all saying a lopsided 3-5-2 with Apter on the right is how we will play and you were disagreeing. Again, sometimes it’s ok to admit you might have been wrong10 -
A lopsided 3-5-2 was always JJ favourite with one wing back being more of a winger and the other WB more of a defender. We just didn't have the players to do this when Johnnie Jackson was at CAFC as CBT couldn't defend where at least Small knew Ramsey had his back when he went flying upfield once he was moved to the right.
JJ getting that unbalanced squad to mid table from 22nd was success in my book.

Braziliance said:I can't see Apter fulfilling the Small role, he doesn't appear athletic enough.
I think it will be 343 with TC and Apter either side of a striker, or a 3412 and Apter will play in the 10 or maybe even do what TC does and drift out wide as a striker.
I can't see any scenario where he is up and down the right flank all game, I will be surprised if that isn't Ramsay now based on our transfer business so far, or maybe Costello, but I think he will be pairing Coventry in the middle.

But also defensively on the right of a 4-4-2 he would have been expected to get back into shape so this feels quite similar to what we would be asking him to do in our lopsided formation. If he did it last season then I don’t see a reason why he can’t now. I actually think if you were to put Small’s role last season into a traditional formation it is probably most similar to RM in a 4-4-2
A big part of our success second half of last season was having a player on the right flank who could go past defenders and attack. We lost that player, but have now signed Apter who has those attributes. I can’t see why he doesn’t just slot in to that role. Ramsay behind him makes a lot of sense, JRC in midfield also makes a lot of sense as he will probably be much better covering from midfield out there than Docherty/Anderson
I can see us flicking between lopsided 3-5-2 with Apter on the right and the 3-4-2-1 you describe. What I definitely can’t see is Jones deciding to play just 2 central midfielders. His whole managerial career any success has come from packing central areas of the pitch, so a 3-4-3 with 2 wide players in the front 3 I just can’t see him going for that. Maybe a 3-4-2-1 with Apter and Carey behind a striker is our defensive option but I still think a lot of games we will be 3-5-2/4-2-3-1 like last season
Would also add that at the start of last season Apter was playing as a wing back in a 3-5-2 so it’s something he has done before, and our wing back role is obviously not a normal one so would suit him more
Look at Small, and then look at Apter. Small is more muscly, more broad and we have seen how tough he is, Apter looks slimmer, quite narrow in frame, and I have read Blackpool fans say he isn't someone who is going to get up and down and may struggle against more physical defenders.
It appears Apter is on a different level currently to Small in terms of attacking quality (the stats of footage we have seen don't lie), but if we are talking purely from an athletic build and physical strength, Small looks like he would have his number, which is no sly on Apter, Small is very tough for a full back.
Just because he is bigger and more broader yes it does mean he is stronger physically which is what I was alluding to. He has less of an athletic frame, again, I have seen Blackpool fans multiple times highlight how he may find more physical games more difficult where he won't get as much time on the ball.
Luckily he probably won't be playing the Thierry role of defensive duties as I highly doubt our recruitment team have identified a pure winger to be running up and down busting a gut when we already play with 5 defenders

Torrid time is such a Charlton Life exaggeration for the narrative. Christ alive man 😂
If you think Apter is as athletic as Small, fair enough. That’s where I’d disagree, yes hes not as athletic as Small (not many players are), but he’s played wing back before and looking at his role for Blackpool last season he should be absolutely fine playing the role Small did last season, which is why we’ve signed him imo
You challenging my view of him not being athletic enough is basically the same thing, cmon, don't play coy.
I mean it's likely that he physically will not be able to match strong attackers, Small can and has. That's where my part about athleticism comes from, not that he can run up and down a pitch which I expect any professional footballer be able to do.
Do you know how insane it would be to spend 2 and a half million on a winger to make him play as part of a back 5 who has never been succesful there as a professional off of the back of a season playing purely as a winger. (Which is what Small was doing out of possession playing in a back 5)
Last post on it genuinely cause it sounds like I am digging him out, I think he's going to be quality but only for where I believe Jones will play him. That's that.

Everyone? Who is everyone? 'Me and all my 5 Charlton Life mates were disagreeing with you' mur mur mur.
Ramsay could play right wing back, absolutely, as he is a defender by trade who has attacking qualities which could develop.
Small was 'basically a winger' through necessity, not purposely.
I said Apter will not be on defensive duties, and I will stick by that.
The beauty of it is I don't even give a shit if I end up being wrong. Been wrong plenty of times, been right plenty of times, that is the nature of being opionated/having strong views and not sitting on the fence. None of it matters outside the Charlton Life bubble.

I was expecting a thank you for proving you right. Ok not really, you are clearly contradicting yourself.
I think the issue may be that in your endless stream of posts you can’t even remember what you said, but others do.
A polite suggestion would be to try talking to people and not at them.
The incessant disagreements with everyone that has a different opinion to you is thoroughly draining.
Yes I should try harder to not read your non stop posts, but it is no easy task when you want to dominate so many discussions.
Maybe consider letting other people express their opinions without effectively telling them they are all wrong and you know more than everyone else combined as this is clearly not the case.7 -
Imagining Apter checking the Charlton forum to see what the fans think of him signing, seeing this thread and then immediately looking into how easy it is to annul football contracts18

Hard to judge much on today, although there was a moment when Apter had two of their guys on him, and one of them clearly pulled his shirt, and a moment later the ref gave them a free kick for retaliatory shirt pulling by Apter.
So in that tiny piece of play it took two guys to deal with Apter and he didn't seen to mind about mixing it.0 -
Bleddy 'ell, why are people squabbling?
We each see things differently - but we all support the same team, don' t we?3 -
Apparently I don't.6

You find my disagreements draining, yet here you are, again, involving yourself without prompt. Find me a time where I have quoted you unprompted, I bet you will struggle.
Dominate so many discussions? I think I post on about 4 different threads on here consistently and again, I very rarely actually quote people and start arguments, I think you'll find most of the time it is people quoting me. Of course I'll say this now and some clever sod will say something like "everyone looks at me" which has been done before when it's just the truth.
Again without being rude, I am not about to start taking social lessons off of someone who is proactive. Haven't you in the past accused me of enjoying Charlton losing so my videos are more interesting or alluded to it? Did you also not flag up what time I was logging in? Did you also not try an insinuate I have no life and that I am always on here?
You can drop the nice guy and condescending act, you purposely try and goad me, consistently.
I'll continue posting how I post ta, if you don't like it, just carry on as is, I'm certainly not gonna go around mass quoting you to try and be funny.1 -

Thierry use to have two defenders marking at times or 3 on one occasion when he nearly scored the goal of the season 1st half against Lincoln when TC was absent so hopefully we have enough quality for other players to utilise the space. If Apted end up as the player who goes pass defenders he will have the same tight marking and Championship defenders will soon know he cuts in on his favoured left foot.
Sounds a good prospect as long as we aren't too negative and he can do his best work in the final third.

What formation do all of you think we will play next season personally don’t see it changing I think we will remain with the 352 then transition into the 4231/433 in attack with apter on the right hand side.5

You and someone else said "he prefers it when we lose for his vlogs" or something like that. Unless I am getting mixed up and if I am apologies, but whoever those two were, they can do one* on that note.
Everyone is allowed to express their opinion, who says otherwise? Like I said, good luck finding posts of me denying people their opinion unprompted, or trying to pick on someone, or any other playground antics I see on this forum constantly.
I genuinely don't understand the last part. I am very approachable, talk to everyone who speaks to me and make an effort to socialise at games. So I don't know what this chance is. At a default level I like every single Charlton fan and start off with 100% respect towards people.
I just know how to speak up for myself unlike RonnieMoore as an example who gets pelters and essentially is online bullied. If people don't like that, I'm not gonna lose too much sleep over it.4 -
