Air India Plane Crash

Terrible news from India today, what with the plane that crashed shortly after take off on its way to Gatwick with 53-Britons on board. Not just those in the Air, but the plane crashed into accommodation used by Doctors, so you'd imagine there are wounded / fatalities on the ground too
Amazingly it seems that one British man who was onboard the plane has somehow survived. Be interesting to hear how it happened in the first place (both the crash, and the man surviving), as from footage the plane just doesnt seem to get any lift.

It’s just awful, so many lives wiped out.1

Awful news. I know there are videos of the crash, but I REALLY don't want to watch such incidents.1

Awful disaster, if it is true it's unbelievable anyone could survive that.
Some of the comments I've seen on-line are sickening, we truly have some nasty people living amongst us.

I'm sure you mean it in a nice and inquisitive manner, but it feels a bit soon to be interested in the specific details. Sadly, friends of friends were on the flight and are in a real state of shock.
RIP. Seeing it's destination being London Gatwick sends an extra chill down the spine (of reality).2 -
Absolutely dreadful. Miraculously one survivor. RIP3

Video on BBC News, only just made it to 625ft before the mayday way sent, then just came back down, looked like the nose was up, but unable to gain height, absolutely horrific, thoughts and prayers for all involved...1

The Dreamliner is a safe aircraft. This is the first crash i think. But Boeing have a growing reputation for cutting corners. We have to see what the cause is. RIP all those that have lost their lives.2

A modern 787 too - i'm sure we'll all flown on those.
There is some speculation on the internet which has now reached the BBC. Why were the wheels down, the flaps retracted, and the nose pointing so high up? Not surprising the plane stalled and fell from the sky.0 -

Terrible crash.
RIP the victims.2 -
The experts on X are saying the flaps are in the wrong position for a takeoff. But others have said it could be a stall or an overweight plane unable to get sufficient lift. Really sad story
RIP to the fallen3 -

Awful and scary as you don’t expect the best planes with good airlines to have these sort of crashes in this day and age
RIP to the victims and families I’m not an aviation expert unlike a lot of people on twatter but the plane didn’t get any lift at all did it get to the right speed for take off considering the weight of the plane, im sure we will find out when the black box is found

Expert interviewed on the BBC suggesting the pilots retracted the flaps instead of the landing gear, resulting in immediate loss of lift.
I think suggestions that the flaps were initially in the wrong position are most likely inaccurate. The pilots will have followed a checklist before attempting take-off and should have confirmed the flaps position at this stage. Obviously the flight recorder will confirm this once recovered.
Seems incredibly unlikely the plane was overweight, it wasn't even full.
An absolute tragedy that, if the expert is correct, seems unfathomable with the amount of training pilots have to go through.3 -
Now that really is a miracle.JaShea99 said:

We call them the AAAIB (Armchair Air Accident Insinuation Bollocks) folk, they drive us insane. As someone who works on these very aircraft, don't believe any of the assumptions coming out right now on Twitter or on the BBC because it's quite frankly nonsense.Rothko said:

The sole survivor appears to be a true miracle. To escape from that impact and fireball with barely a scratch on him. Even his phone was unbroken walking out the hospital, not to mention a ticket untouched by fire.

Regards of flaps being incorrect, surely there would be on board warning systems to let pilots know the flaps are in the wrong position?

Shall avoid speculating but will break down briefly two factors here. Firstly, in the flight deck you run off electronic checklist displays, flap setting is part of the before taxi checklist and you'll have to have it ticked before you can move onto the next checklist. The second factor is that you'll get a Take Off Config aural and visual alert if they tried to take off with the flaps set incorrectly.AdTheAddicK said:

The flaps at position 1 on the 787s aren't that noticeable, especially in a video that's 360p quality. The fact the media are jumping on this assumption is frustrating to say the least. What none of them seem to notice in the video of the take off is the big puff of smoke coming from the port side engine on take off. Lose one of those before you reach V2 (the speed deemed safe to climb) and you end up stalling very quickly.
It seems the tail section of the aircraft is in tact so they won't struggle to locate the black boxes, hopefully this will prove quickly that it wasn't pilot error and the media shouldn't be pointing fingers already.20 -
RIP. An absolute nightmare.

Surviving a plane crash is a miracle, but surviving it when every single other person died and being ok to walk to an ambulance is absolutely unbelievable.10
