Play off attendances

From what I can find the Wembley play off final attendances were:

1998 77739 (35000 CAFC)

2019 76155 (38000 CAFC)

2025 76193 (39400 CAFC)

but 2025 had empty blocks and as far as I remember 2019 didn’t. And there were far more Sunderland than Orient of course.

Meaningless attendance number this year really, with so much extra demand but many unsold (available but not for purchase) seats, empty blocks with no explanation, and people turned away as their ticket was allegedly already used (according to @Chunes on another thread).
Would hope for some explanations rather that EFL propaganda about how great the attendance was.

ChatGPT thinks this years league one play off final had the highest attendance.   Not sure if its true or not (mostly the part about the old Wembley being bigger)

    ---

The highest recorded attendance for a League One play-off final at Wembley Stadium is 76,193, achieved on 25 May 2025 during the match between Charlton Athletic and Leyton Orient. Charlton secured a 1–0 victory in that final.

This attendance surpassed the previous record of 76,155, set on 26 May 2019 when Charlton Athletic faced Sunderland in the play-off final. Wikipedia

Prior to these, the 2008 final between Doncaster Rovers and Leeds United drew 75,132 spectators. Wikipedia

Notably, the 1999 final between Manchester City and Gillingham had an attendance of 76,935; however, this match was held at the original Wembley Stadium, which had a larger capacity than the current venue. Football Wiki

Therefore, as of May 2025, the highest League One play-off final attendance at the current Wembley Stadium is 76,193.

The old Wembley by the late 90s had a smaller capacity than the current one.

I don't remember a load of empty blocks in the Sunderland end in '19 and was surprised last weekend had a higher attendance.

If they had given us another block we would have taken the record!  :'(

Those numbers do not include the Tier 2 Wembley administered hospitality tix for CAFC fans. The lounges were absolutely rammed. I reckon we had 41-42k there easy those extra numbers considered. Wish I could relive the whole day again was a dream day out start to finish.

Sunderland did have empty areas in a similar area to Leyton O. Not quite as large, but big enough.

This is why you cannot trust AI. That final between Manchester City and Gillingham was a sell-out for both clubs. The capacity by that point was way under 90,000 and you had segregation. And not even sure what its point is… ?!

Anyone buying a phone ticket from someone personally is doing so on trust.
You could "sell" your ticket loads of times, having kept a copy and simply make sure you're first in at the turnstile if you want to attend.

If you're not attending the first buyer will get in and no one else.
No way would I buy a phone ticket unless I knew and trusted the seller.

That’s funny because those are the three, and only three, League One play-off finals that I’ve been to.  I feel quite pleased with myself, lol.
