Our Play Off Record

Not just in finals but all play off games. Am I correct in thinking that since 1987, we’ve played in 14 play off games and only lost 2 in 90 minutes (Leeds away ‘87 and Doncaster at home in 19) ? Even that loss was a win !
Incredible, if so.

Lost to Shrewsbury twice in 2018.

And Swindon beat us in one of the two games in 2010.
  • Our final record is amazing though!
  • Crystal Palace - Both Legs 1996
    Swindon - Away Leg 2010
  • Nope cant be right...

We also lost at Swindon in the Semi-Finals, and both legs against Palarse and Shrewsbury.

Our Wembley record is ridiculous though, I guess it helps that when we get there its a result of having finished 3rd / 4th, so we're naturally one of the stronger sides - We've never got there when we've finished 5th / 6th so never been a true underdog like Leyton Orient or Doncaster (had they got there instead of us in 2018/19)

Irrespective of some losses along the way, four out of four final victories is one hell of a record. I just wish we could take that record into cup football.

We're very consistent, in that when we're one of the weaker teams in the playoffs (whether because of poor form or because we weren't that good) - 1996, 2010, 2018 - we crash out in the semis, but when we're one of the stronger teams in the playoffs - 1998, 2019, 2025 - we get through to Wembley and win.

We've never scraped our way to Wembley against the odds, but similarly have never lost in the semis when we were the better team (unlike say Stockport this season).

Might do if we ever reached a final!

  • The only raw deal we've had in the playoffs was Swindon. Palace had a great side and we were still developing. Shrewsbury never felt right anyway. And we won the other four.

One raw deal in seven attempts.

This is the natural balance for why we get nowhere in the cups these days.
  • Strangely 6 of our 10 final/final replay goals have been scored by defenders with only Jim Melrose and Clive Mendonca breaking the pattern

I would say 2010 is a bit of an exception to that rule, we finished 4th and were one of the better teams that season, only just missing out on automatic promotion with half an hour of the season to go

I forgot to add the caveat of,”except when we play a team in the semis starting with S”.  Swindon, Shrews and Scum.

We did tail off a bit though, as we had looked good for automatics for the first half of the season, but got overtaken as a very good Norwich got their act together, Leeds hung on and Millwall hit good form.

If we had been able to sign BWP a year earlier than we did, I think we would have held on to 2nd, as alongside Burton we had mediocre loan strikers like Mooney and Akpo Sodje.

And in 2018 we had Magennis and Ajose .
