Crouch is great at playing in runners and bringing in others into the play, unfortunatly Rooney is exactly the same. Both drop into midfield allowing the opposition defence to push up, no one stretches the defence by hanging on the last shoulder for the ball over the top or the presure release diagnal ball. I've said all along you have to play one of them. And one of Owen, Defoe, Bent, Ashton or Johnson.
While arguably not the best players of those lot Ashton & Benty fit best into the system as they have more strings to their bow - size, strength, pace, good in the air.
