Government tells English football: change or be changed

The Football Association has been given an
"absolute deadline" to bring in rules tackling debt levels at clubs or
face government action.

MPs have already demanded sweeping changes to the way football is run.

And now a deadline of 29 February has been imposed for the FA
to overhaul its board and bring in a new licensing system for clubs.

"[Football's] governance has failed to keep up with the modern game," said Sports Minister Hugh Robertson.

"If football proves unable to sort this out itself then the
government may have to legislate. I'm not keen on that idea because I've
always believed very strongly that sport, not government, should run
sport in this country.

  • 68% of Premier League income spent on players' wages
  • Total Premier League revenues £2bn
  • But operating losses in the top four divisions outstrip Premier League's profits
  • Total losses for the 92 league clubs stands at £600m
  • Collective club debt now £3.5bn

Why are they telling the Football Association???

Surely they should be speaking to Alex Ferguson, he runs football doesn't he? :-)

Not before time but I am not hopeful that football has the sense to get it's collective act together. Will be interested to see how this unfolds.

good. Hopefully this means money will become less of an influence due to the fact there to busy keeping themselves out of debt.

Good to see the Govt nudging the FAsuits into action.

Unfortunately this is an empty threat, even if the government had the balls to try and go through with it, FIFA would immediately threaten to expel England as they have strict rules on government interference (wouldn't any sort of government interference with the gravy train to Switzerland now would we?)

    response just made
Joint FA, Premier League and Football League statement: "The
football authorities are grateful to both the Culture, Media and Sport
Select Committee and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport for the
time taken and interest shown in the governance arrangements for
football. We shall now take time to consider

    the Department's response

as we formulate what the most appropriate actions might be. The FA, the
Premier League, The Football League and representatives of the National
Game are already engaged in this process and are committed to keeping
the Minister and his Department informed of our progress."

Agree totally with Bedsaddick. Announced today we have the highest unemployment for 17 years (3 good mates of mine made redundant in last 6 months and just about everyone else I know scared witless their jobs are going to be pulled, or on pay freezes), inflation about to soar even higher after the latest round of QE2 (sorry, printing money), a Secretary of State for Defence who just happens to invite his best mate to meetings, a Chancellor you wouldn't put in charge of a sweet shop, topped by a PM who is so deluded he thinks everyone should pay off their credit card bills when many are struggling to put food on the table. Why the hell should anyone listen to a word these imbeciles say?

Well said, exactly what I thought. These clowns (no matter what party they belong to) haven't got a clue.

Surely an edict for companies to be run properly and not go into massive debt should cover all industries, why don't the government implement this across all sectors?

Football clubs are very good at bending the rules, if a '68% of turnover rule' came in the club would buy them accommodation, or rather than wages do it as signing on fees or whatever it took.

ABOUT TIME! Might have to cut certain overpaid players wages now! Although how good the outcome will be i dont know

All of these overpaid, pampered players should be made to go and watch the young Paralympian Stef Reid, who lost a leg in a boating accident. She manages, like others, to beat the odds in a highly courageous manner, making light of her disability. She puts footballers to shame.

Another aimless, pointless, swirl at ''the government'' who should be ''getting it together'' with their magic wand and repairing the damage of two ruinously expensive and pointless wars conducted on the brink of a major world recession. How anyone can compare trying to get the FA to get its act together with a general DEMAND that the government sort the country out, deserves an 'oh dear' comment. Ridiculous

    Sorry, it's not that hard

    •  68% of Premier League income spent on players' wages - pay players less
    • Total Premier League revenues £2bn - share the revenue more evenly
    • But operating losses in the top four divisions outstrip Premier League's profits - share the revenue more evenly

    • Collective club debt now £3.5bn - pay players less and share the revenue more evenly

The politicians can't run the country. In fact it's like the lunatics running the asylum at the moment with huge debts, high unemployment and banks going bankrupt or being bailed out, Eurozone debt etc etc etc.

How can they say football must get its financial house in order.

If the politicians start running football then i pity the England football team of the future. St Kitts or the Falkland Islands will be beating us regularly 6-0.

I don't think anyone would disagree that they came into a complete mess however it is the way they are "trying" to sort the problems that the majority of people have a problem with.

Unfortunately it isn't 'that' simple. You can't just 'pay players less'. If you do that then they will of course leave to go to the likes of the Milans, Barca & Madrid, PSG & Bayern Munich, clubs that will be willing to pay the astronomical wages to have the worlds best players. If that were to happen then English football gets worse, our clubs don't fare as well in European competition/less people globally want to watch the English game and in turn our revenue drops. Money in football isn't just an issue in the UK, it's happening at clubs and in leagues all over the world, and it's an issue that FIFA needs to address, and bring in strict rules that will be adhered to to combat the problem, not the FA or the Premier League, and definitely not the government.

I know its slightly missing the point but the fact that clubs use 68% of their income on players wages isn't actually a bad thing is it? This is stating that staff costs are nearly 70% of income - they are the workers so they get the money. I would rather this than 70% gets spent on stationey costs! Does anybody know who much RBS or other service sector business spend on staff costs compared to income?

If your company was making big losses would you be happy with 'pay the staff less' being the 'obvious answer?

Share the revenue evenly means what exactly? Big clubs make money and give it to small clubs? Clearly a sensible business model and one I would again be interested to see working in the company you work for.

70% of the money should go to the board and the players should live in council houses and get the bus to the ground.

Let's face it, this whole thing is just populist shit.  The government and FA have no intention of actually doing anything.  It's just to keep the man on the street happy so he keeps spending 50 scoots on nylon shirts and tv subscriptions and stop hand wringing about the fact that the people that they worship earn a lot of cash.
