MariaCAFC will be able to tell you all you need to know about Dubai - I'll ask her to have a look at this thread.

Check your luggage about 15 times before you check in. Mate of mine had half a joint in some old shorts that he'd washed and forgot about for a couple of years. They found it in Dubai and gave him 4 years. He got out after 8 months (Ramaddan thing) but they beat him too a pulp every day. Apparently he got it worse because he was black but they weren't exactly friendly with anyone who wasn't a muslim brother. To top it off it was his honeymoon. If you're going play it very very straight.

LOL...the other half recently landed a top job as an IT trainer (which is her profession) with a very large law firm in the city, part of her remit is to travel to various office locations, just this year she will be in Brussels, Paris, Tokyo, Bejin, Singapore, Moscow, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Dubai & Abu Dhabi, all for a week or two.
I can go with her on her companys expense as long as I pay my own flights, perks of her job, Dubai seems perfect, always wanted to go to the Burj Al Arab hotel.

I know someone who worked out there and was driving and some drunk fell off a bridge and landed on the windscreen of the car and got done for murder!

Islamic law states if someone is dead in weird circumstances then someone must be responsible and because this guy was the only one around he got taken to prison and was not allowed a phonecall or anything! he only got out after 3 months because he got a lawyer and found the jumper had alcohol in his system (again illegal) which made the arab responsible.

    madness.

Anyway, you don't have to stick to islamic law in the tourist areas but be careful if you venture outside of them.

Well, I can honestly say I have never touched a drug in my life, so no worries there.

You can only get in the Burj if you've got a restaurant booking , ( or are obviously staying there before WSS pulls me up ) , you can't just wander in . If you do go there though , make sure you pay a visit to the panoramic bar at the top . If her company are paying though even better !

It's lovely and I would recommend it to anyone - but there are places to stay and not to stay - I have just whispered you my email address as I keep losing access to this site. Stupid Work internet.

    Been twice.

Santa? i know they're very strict but that seems very harsh? actually how long ago was that as i was reading the last time i was there (november) about a bloke who had been caught in transit with a bit of smoke on him?

It is in July when we go - last year it hit 49 for most of the time we were out there.

Loved Dubai, but didnt love the heat in June/July... there's heat and there's heat and then there's heat in the middle of a Dubai summer!

If you can stay in the Burj al Arab, you're laughing. Crazy money in there. Otherwise, like Shag says, make sure you get in there for dinner or afternoon tea and then go to the Sky Bar...

Curb_it. I know who you mean, it was a DJ, 'Grooverider'. Again he was black which doesn't help and he had some hash and porn and i'm sure he's getting the same treatment. Most of what i know about my mates case is through his wife (stuck by him) but they really are brutal. Type in poppy seedand Dubai and see how crazy they are. Another favourite is to leave prisoners in 40 degree heat all day with no shade. Not a slap on the wrist country, 4 years is virtually mandatory, be warned.

    S.

yes he was a dj - thats the one you're referring to.

heat too hot in may - bearable in november, in fact we had a day of cloud. pretty much a building site still - no pavements by the hotel we were staying Royal Meridien but lots to see and do.

Did a stopover in Dubai last year. If you are going with a shopper they ve got mega malls. Watches etc much cheaper than Uk. Taxis are ridiculously cheap ( a 20 min ride is only about two or three quid ) You can do an afternoon tea at the Burj for about 60 quid i think. One of the shopping malls we went to had a ski slope in it with real snow, unreal.
