I've done one of these for the last couple of years, hope it is suitably occupying.

These clues should lead you to seven names (some just surnames) associated with Charlton...

1) Initially, In order to get this player's name you must first briefly look up to see an American train.

2) An event at a strip club for the lads.

3) The Scotsman dismisses you as a grass.

4) The Chinaman's haircut is more painful than his teeth.

5) Without you, he's the fake Dutchman.

6) The Oxbridge man didn't pay up after losing his bet.

7) Diurnal blasphemy at Mr Hislop.

  • 6 is Don Welsh

The others are making my brain hurt
  • [cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite]6 is Don Welsh

    Yep.
  • This is bloody tough.

Does 3 include 'nark? Can't think of anyone including those letters ... sure there wasn't a Jock Nark ;-)
  • Grass could be snitch but not sure that helps

Diurnal means in the day time so I thought Mervyn Day but other parts don't fit.

Blasphemy could mean sin or swear so Day sin/sin day.

No, my dyslexia means my brain isn't hard wired for cryptic clues.
  • I thought it was too easy last year!

Previous quizzes may give a hint as to how this pans out:

That would have been a goodun! It's a bit more of a play on words with a current member of the squad.

So far with explanations of those that have been got:

    1) Initially, In order to get this player's name you must first briefly look up to see an American train.

    2) An event at a strip club for the lads

Semi-do (Semedo) (do = event, semi = well, I shouldn't have to explain this...)

    3) The Scotsman dismisses you as a grass.

    4) The Chinaman's haircut is more painful than his teeth.

Do-hurty (Doherty: A reworking of the "what time was the Chinese man's dental appointment?" - "Tooth Hurty" joke, do = hairdo).

    5) Without you, he's the fake Dutchman

Conner Gogh (Coner Gough) Without "u" Gough = Goch and fake = conner)

    6) The Oxbridge man didn't pay up after losing his bet

Don Welsh (Don - academic teaching staff, welsh - to fail to pay up on a bet)

    7) Diurnal blasphemy at Mr Hislop

Christ! Ian Dailly (diurnal = daily, Hislop = Ian)

The two remaining clues are both members of the current squad and both surnames only.
