MATCH PREVIEW: Charlton Athletic vs. Bristol City... Good Friday - 3pm Kick-Off
Charlton Athletic vs. Bristol City
Good Friday - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Ben Toner
Introduction
Its been two weeks since the last time Charlton kicked the ball in anger, with Norwich City the last visitors the Valley, and whilst the away side perhaps deserved their 1-0 win, things didn't completely go their way - We've now had an International Break, allowing for the majority of the squad to rest, recover and focus at Sparrows Lane... One last push to secure Championship Football ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The Opposition
Name: Bristol City (16th) - Interim Manager: Roy Hodgson
Ground: Ashton Gate
Previous League Result: Bristol City 0-1 West Brom
It feels like a lifetime ago since we last faced Bristol City, back in August we played out an early season draw in the West Country, it was a tight game where nice side were able to break down the other, and the 0-0 draw was probably a fair reflection of proceedings on that particular afternoon.
It was understandably seen as a decent achievement that afternoon, Bristol City after all were coming into the new season having reach the Play-Offs the previous year, and would no doubt be looking to go one better. For a lot of this campaign, they looked strong to repeat that achievement, albeit under the eye of new Manager: Gerhard Struber, and the Robins would end 2025 in 6th place... Roll into the New Year though, and its been a disaster for the visitors this coming Friday, they've won just four games, and travel to the Valley having picked up just a solitary point in their last five outings... The loss of Anis Mehmeti, who caused Charlton plenty of problems, to Ipswich in the January Window wont have helped.
So with Bristol City dropping from 6th to 16th, and with an International Break on the horizon, I guess it made sense for them to replace Struber with Roy Hodgson as Interim Manager until the Summer... Yes I know April Fool's was yesterday... No... This isn't a joke - Hodgson having had an illustrious Managerial career is back at Bristol City having spent the year in charge with the club back in 1982, yet with the ex-England Manager now at the ripe age of 78... Should he instead be thinking more about enjoying retirement instead? - Especially as this is his first Managerial appointment since leaving Surrey in 2024.
In terms of head to head, and Charlton have 30-wins in this fixture, compared to Bristol City's 19-wins
Charlton Team News
The International Break has allowed Nathan Jones to give his squad a bit of a rest, and has hopefully allowed some individuals the chance to return to action after injury; Matty Godden, Harvey Knibbs and Collins Sichenje the names that were rumoured to be returning... He must also decided whether to stick with Will Mannion who despite conceding early against Norwich, kept the score line down, or put Thomas Kaminski back between the sticks.
Elsewhere and we did have individuals away on International Duty, with Tyreece Campbell and Amari'i Bell coming through without injury against New Caledonia, and the DR Congo as they missed out on reaching the World Cup - Both of whom will be making the return from Mexico, and you'd suspect that they'd possibly be back in training today, so could still be involved against Bristol City tomorrow afternoon.
Mannion
Ramsay - Jones - Bell
Clarke - Coventry - Docherty - Chambers
Carey
Dykes - Kelman
Substitutes Bench: Kaminski - Gough - Gillesphey - Costello - Fullah - Coady - Leaburn - Campbell - Fevrier

Absolutely no idea what to expect from Bristol City. Let’s just not give Scott Twine a chance to bury a free kick6

BC were in the midst of an injury crisis, especially at the back. Do we know if that is still the case? Trying to peruse the interweb is proving tricky! Can't see how appointing Woy could inspire, but maybe confuse their players? Hopefully an England v Iceland type performance from BC and we'll be fine!4
-
They're already on the beach and likely won't give too much of a hoot about impressing an interim manager. 2-0 the reds 🤜6
-
Opportunity to get our usual end of season downfall properly underway after a nice 2 weeks off. 0-2 defeat and first of 5 or 6 conceded over Easter without reply.4
-
Can only see a comfortable 3-0 win, and into the 50+ brigade we go, hopefully with the return of Godden Ole Ole...COYRRFSR1

I hope not as playing an injury-hit team seems to be a guaranteed defeat this seasonMortimerwasgod said:BC were in the midst of an injury crisis, especially at the back. Usual master class, 1-0.1
-
Shackles off and City have no fit centre backs so a rip roaring 3 - 2 win for the Addicks with both Doc and Cov on the scoresheet.3
-
Collins and Burke are out Burke is training but Collins little longer .. but Godden and Knibbs are back .. Campbell and Bell should not be included considering late arrival back at sparrows lane …. Going for a draw 1-11

Knowing what NJ selections can be like I won’t be surprised if TC starts.6

- Charlton have alternated between defeat (2) and victory (2) in their last four home league games against Bristol City, with this the first time they’ve hosted them since a 3-2 win on Boxing Day 2019.
- Bristol City have lost just one of their last five league games against Charlton (W2 D2), going down 3-2 at the Valley in December 2019.
- Charlton have lost four of their nine home league games in 2026 (W3 D2), one more than they did in 22 at the Valley in 2025 (W15 D4 L3).
- So far in 2026, only already relegated Sheffield Wednesday (10) have failed to score in more different Championship games than Bristol City (8).
- Charlton have had more different substitutes score for them in the Championship this season than any other side (9), while only Ipswich (17) have had more sub goals overall than the Addicks (13).

Don’t think you have ever predicted a win, so look forward to 3pts.😂swords_alive said:Opportunity to get our usual end of season downfall properly underway after a nice 2 weeks off. 0-2 defeat and first of 5 or 6 conceded over Easter without reply.0 -
I’d save TC, Bell and maybe even Dykes for Monday. Give Kelman, Gillesphey and Leaburn the opportunity to start5

It's generally healthier not to expect too much i find, and it is that time of year. Granted we have had a couple of runs to play off success in recent history but that is not typical over the course of my 'support'.Sword65pf said:

Time for a decent first half for a change at the valley3

5-0 COYR0

I would swap Coady for Coventry0

Looking forward to going to the game tomorrow and a real shame that it does not look as if there will be an Easter football programme in the Championship next season1

This is a game where everything points to a win for us and we can finally breath easy re relegation but this is us so it’s never going to be easy is it0
-
PS
we need to score 2 as it’s nailed on Scott Twine smashes a worldie1 -
One more win required to put this season to bed. Please let it be tomorrow.
No doubt we play not to lose, and hope to nick a win, and that's fine.
1-0.3 -
Bell to start, TC on bench, Leaburn and Kelman up top, Dykes and TC replace them on about 65 mins, 2-0 home win.4
-
I'd like but probably won't get... Bell to start with Kelman and Dykes up front.
After 60 mins... Maybe JRC, TC and/or Leaburn. Need to win but need to avoid defeat first. However, I have a feeling that Coady will start.0 -
Tricky to.predict with that new manager bounce. Not sure they really have all the injuries they say they have either. I think we will score in the first half for once but still be pegged back, 1-1.0
-
1-0 addicks win. Ginge with the goal.0
