I'm not certain when I started going to The Valley.Blucher said:That 27 December 1971 game at Carrow Road referred to FA was one of my early away games as a youngster. It was a full house at Carrow Road, Kenny Foggo scored after 10 minutes and we barely got a kick, with Ray Treacy having our only attempt on goal in the second half. Two late goals finished us off. David Cross was making his debut, having signed from Rochdale for £40,000, and another debutant, Jim Bone from Partick Thistle, scored in the 2-0 at The Valley in the return at Easter. Following a 2-1 home defeat to Orient in Good Friday morning (featuring a memorable own goal from David Shipperley), the writing was very much on the wall. At least we're in much better shape at present.
Norwich will be favourites tomorrow but we usually perform reasonably well at home and I quite fancy us to take something from the game. I think that Josh Makama, who gave us such problems on Boxing Day, and Toure are both still injured, which must deplete Norwich to some extent, notwithstanding their excellent form and the strength of their squad. As others have said, a draw would be a satisfactory outcome.
I know I've had a S/T since 72/73.
I reckon I first went in 1969.
I definitely remember Shipperley's OG. He was in or near to the centre circle wasn't he?1 -
Expect Carey to have a good game. Being a Norwich fan and all his family being Norwich, it’s usually the way football works.
They’re a very good side who move the ball well. What happened to them at the start of the season is down to one man. Some of their fans didn’t like him from the start, the squad was far too good to be in that position. A better start and they’d be top 6 by now.
Hoping for a good day in decent weather and picking up the points to take us over that 50 point mark but think we’ll get a draw.
Would like to see Kelman start too.
By the time we play Bristol City on Good Friday, we could have Sichenje, Knibbs, Berry and Godden all available or at least close to it. Decent opportunity for us to try and kick on and end the season strongly.2 -
He certainly was - and thumped the ball high in the air, looping it over our goalie. If there were blooper complications in those days, it would certainly have made the cut !Covered End said:

I knew as a kid Charlton weren't great.
I've never supported Charlton for the glory.
I support them because they were my local club.

4 - 3 win.
NJ releases Charlton's attacking potential and we win a thriller.
Despite his hat-trick of assists Campbell will be blamed for us letting in three goals.9 -
One of the tougher fixtures going at the moment, but we know we're strong at home, generally good against decent (and expecially free flowing) opposition, and hopefully being two points off Nathan's aim of 50 with eight games to go is just the right balance of motivating vs calming.
Not sure any result would surprise me, other than a load of goals in either direction. I reckon 1-1 with Carey giving it to the locals.
Would definitely like to see Kelman up top with Dykes. As much as I generally want to see more of JRC, probably a game for Doc.0 -
Millwall by a country mile surely Golfie?golfaddick said:

Charlton players, I remember a 6ft 8 goalie from South Africa named Utenbogaart who scored from a goal kick in a reserve match at the Valley. The opposition keeper finger touched it which made it legal. The huge South African never made it into our first team and went home.0 -
@Kingfish 7 October 1950 v Folkstone. It was a clearance rather than a goal kick.
He actually did make the first team six times0 -
Charlton 3 -2 Norwich
Suddenly it all clicks up top but also falls apart at the back.

Harry Clarke to score the only goal.0

I was 15 and a group of us from Mottingham and Middle Park travelled there as a group.
Money was tight and as we often done, we jumped on a train at Mottingham (without buying tickets) and ran through the Barriers at London Bridge, then repeated this again at Liverpool Street.
We managed to reach Norwich undetected, and once again ran through the Barriers, having reached Norwich without paying a penny in Rail tickets.
Then we heard an announcement that reminded travelers that the last train back to London was 3.00pm.
No way to get home.Had we had bought a ticket we would have been told.At the final whistle, we saw the Lewis Coaches.
We pleaded with the driver for a lift home, only to be told that the coaches were full. However the driver took pity on us. He said he would give us a lift, but as the coach was full we had to sit on the floor all the way home. Which we did.The good old days!4 -
A Sonny Carey masterclass incoming2

Feeling some clarity now. All this talk of competing in mid-table. Norwich being acclaimed as best place to live. Ed Balls on the radio singing its praises. Sunny day. Big crowd. Normal service resumes. 0-2 defeat.

I believe many 'fans' would welcome a 3-2 win where we get Clarke and Chambers down the flanks and even Ramsay who showed the other week he could make a decent pass forward for Dykes to score when Kayne pushed forward with the ball into midfield from our excellent 3 CB's triumvirate with Jones and Bell.
Obviously you are in more Jeopardy at the back when committing players forward but we are not San Marino and should be looking to score and get shots off on target.
I just can't see how we are going to evolve into a team that creates more chances as it feels like the players are shackled. The WBA and Oxford away games really showed up our limitations.
Middlesbrough was a great 3 points but that was because they hit the Woodwork or missed the target despite our great defensive work.
It's Nathan's gig and staying up is/will be an achievement but...0 -
I will be in the Rose from 1300hrs if anyone wants to buy me a drink, shake my hand or ask for my educated personal opinion on football or life in general.

I am fairly certain you can score directly from a goalkick? Or was that the old rules you couldnt?Kingfish said:

Good feeling about today - big crowd, sun out - let’s get the 3 points wrapped up then maybe one more win and we can start trying out a few things for next season - giving the yoof some games and taking the handbrake off a bit2

So fed up with the clean sheet rhetoric and consequent lack of attacking play and accompanying excitement, that some fans might welcome a 3-2 defeat, let alone a 3-2 win.0 -
Looking forward to watching the game on a lovely sunny day without too much pressure on us to get a result. I’ve been immersed in Seed/Charlton/football for the last few months trying to get this book finally finished, and I’m nearly there at last. This will be a welcome break from the computer screen.

A follow up to my post on the first page:
My grandson has described today's encounter as a massive game ... it's the difference between a defeat, where he will be abused at school by his Canary-supporting mates, and a win where he will be the abuser.
Forget the points on offer folks, this is what it all boils down to.2 -
