Isnt the Dartford Crossing owned by the French too?1

That’s a fair comparison.Zulu said:Not airport or parking related, but gives a general idea of rip-off Britain.....
I had a haircut 3 weeks ago in Cirencester which cost 25 pounds (i was so shocked, i didnt argue) - i'm going to have another next week in Cape Town at a cost of 100 Rand (circa 4 pounds 50p).5 -
Yes, we were told it was fee paying for 20 years, then it would be free.Zulu said:Isnt the Dartford Crossing owned by the French too?1 -
No, the Dartford Crossing’s owned by the UK Government and just run by a private contractor on their behalf. The charge itself is set by the Government, so it’s basically their call. The “French connection” people mention is more about big international firms (Vinci???) being involved in UK infrastructure generally, not that the crossing itself is run by a French company or the money’s all going abroad.
You’d think after all this time though, if successive governments insist on keeping the charge, they might try to save motorists a few quid - for example by cutting out the middleman or passing on any efficiencies2 -

Or perhaps governments of all shades prefer having a third-party in place to act as a shock absorber and take the blame instead of them.Gribbo said:No, the Dartford Crossing’s owned by the UK Government and just run by a private contractor on their behalf. Not about airport parking as such, but We're flying from Stansted in May. A local company that specialises in Airport runs wanted £100 each way from Gravesend
For £100, we've booked the Premier Inn next to the airport the night before with parking for the week included. A no brainer4 -
Other half is Irish and generally back in Ireland every other weekend so I regularly pick up on a Sunday eve and i tend to pick her up a the McDonald’s near Gatwick South. It’s about £300 a year we save1

In all my years of dropping people off at airports including family, I've never been asked to drop them at the car park so they can get the free bus back to the terminal. People just pay it. Wonder how much it will have to go up for people to say, drop us in long stay and we will get the bus back.0

What would Saudi Arabia, China, etc.. and these countries that have bought up our infrastructure have to benefit from taking driving up the prices, while not reinvesting in the infrastructure itself? Everything. Massive profits and the degradation of a major Western country.
I'm continually astounded by the ability of a section of Brits to blame the state of the nation on foreigners (especially considering how it built its wealth) but blaming foreign nations for political decisions made by British politicians to privatise industry is.... remarkable!
Tell me the ultimate cherry on the cake is that you are a big Thatcher fan!1 -
Unfortunately the Big Mac meals you get every time comes to £325.50.palarsehater said:Other half is Irish and generally back in Ireland every other weekend so I regularly pick up on a Sunday eve and i tend to pick her up a the McDonald’s near Gatwick South. It’s about £300 a year we save5 -
In Cape Town now. The quality and price of food and drink (not checked out haircuts) is fantastic. A pint of stella and Castle lager in the V&A waterfront today cost £5.50Zulu said:Not airport or parking related, but gives a general idea of rip-off Britain.....

. A litre of diesel is about 90p. The one think that has surprised me though is how expensive holiday accommodation is. 0 -

Our mate did just this when we came over for the Hemsby Rock n Roll weekend the other week. Easy as anything and only a couple of minutes on the shuttle.cafcfan said:
Alternatively, at Stansted, if you are not feeling litigious use the drop-off zone in the Mid-stay Car Park which gives you 1 hour's free parking. Zone K Bus stops 13 and 14. And wave goodbye to your passenger as they board the free bus to the terminal. Being a free hour it also works for most pick-ups as long as you get you timing right.1 -
Same here got quoted £130 (£250 return).....used the train hour and half from Hastings.addix said:I used to get a cab to Gatwick but with it costing north of £80 now, I get a tram and train instead.
Train only takes 18 minutes from East Croydon and costs £7-£8. Can appreciate that's not an easy option for many with kids and suitcases etc, and the £10 fee is extortionate, but works for me, and if I'm on one of the 6am flights I book a Travelodge or Premier Inn room at the airport for the night before and still save money on the cab & drop off fare.
Leaves me plenty of time to walk round WHSmiths muttering 'Who tf pays £10 for a Toblerone???' before going to the 'Spoons and paying £7.50 for a pint. Captive market.0 -
Great value in SA.....got family living out there.Zulu said:Not airport or parking related, but gives a general idea of rip-off Britain.....

Yea perfect for me usually. I go from slade green to woolwich then jump on the DLR. Although I'm going there very early in July with golf clubs and the trains won't be running that early so can't take that option.guinnessaddick said:

Without "late stage capitalism", you wouldn't be flying to Madrid for £20.cantersaddick said:Extract extract extract. It's all that matters in the race to the bottom that is late stage capitalism.0 -
Congratulations, Siv... I've been posting on here and NetAddicks for 25+ years and that's the first time anyone has accused me of being right-wing!Siv_in_Norfolk said:

I think most of the country agrees that privatisation has sabotaged our core infrastructure.
Do I really think it's foreign actors are doing it on purpose? No, probably not. It's more likely corporate greed and private capital doing what they do best. But I don't think it's such a crazy leap. Just as it wouldn't be crazy to suggest Russia etc.. use social media to sow discontent.0
