All.been said really, but get thr fook innnnnnnnn
Massive result and performance from all of them out there, big special shout outs to Doc, Gough and Mannion.
Mannion 100% keeps his place, feel so much more confident with him in goal tbh, Kaminski has been fine but just has that something about him that makes you wince.
Fully prepared to become the most hated, shithouse team in English football....and I think I love it.
9 points off the drop
10 points off playoffs
3 points of the real prize, 12th place.7 -
One of the best structurally defensive performances I’ve ever seen and we didn’t even have our real defence out.Stunning 3 points.12

Our football last night was essentially 'rope a dope' as popularised by Ali. We just soaked up pressure and frustrated our opponent - not pretty to watch but it worked.

Still buzzing from that this morning.
He rests his first choice back three in favour a child, an old man on his state pension and a guy who would lose a 100m sprint to a snail.
What a performance. And what a great attitude from the fringe players (are you watching Mr. Apter senior?)19 -
I don’t read a game as well as most on here, probably because I didnt play at a high level, and the game was different back then too. But as the game went on, it did seem to me that we had a really good defensive structure as Boro came at us again and again. Then I have another problem. I dont want to ever tell myself that we are doing ok in a game, even when instinctively I have that feeling, because, you know, 60 years of Charlton does that to you. But in the second half I really felt more comfortable than in many other games where we were defending the lead. As well as the overall structure, it seemed to me that Will Mannion had secretly attached a magnet to his midriff and to the ball. We were interecepting so many of their intricate little passes too, especially Doc, who literally ran himself to a standstill, prob my MOM but I’ve got at least five more.I think Micah Mbick may have an opinion on the “Chambers lucky not to see red” narrative.
I am a TC fan and a resolute defender but I agree that last night he was poor overall. Almost his first contribution on the edge of our own box was to pass the ball right back into a dangerous crowded box. Up the other end I think I saw Dykes giving him a mouthful too. Its ok, he is learning and NJ will sort him out.
Rationally we are safe. As Louis M says, there would have to be a catastrophic run in from here for us to be relegated, and no one has ever suggested QPR are relegation candidates, yet they are below us. Most of all, did any of us see a team last night that looked like it didnt have the stomach? Or the squad, come to that? That part of me that I try to suppress is quietly asking if we could get to 60 points…37 -
Well that couldn’t have gone much better. Could it?Clean sheet ✅
Back three rested ✅
No yellow card for Jones ✅
Three massive points ✅Fantastic battling performance, where we limited them to very few clear cut chances despite the amount of possession and shots they had.I loved hearing Coady’s interview with Mendez and Cawley about the way he supported Gough through the game and the encouragement he gave him.As well as the immense shift back 6 (including Mannion) put in. Special mention to Doc, Coventry and Carey who were so diligent at picking up runners and being the first line of defence throughout. You reds!18 -
Very pleased with the result and agree with many that it was a great defensive display.
However, we have to be honest, Middlesbrough missed the target from inside the box multiple times and got a number of free headers. Castledine made a particularly strong contribution to our clean sheet.8 -
A great win! I thought Mannion and Goigh were excellent.
Now some context!
only twice since the championship became a thing in 03/04 have sides been relegated with more than 48 points
Peterborough 54 points
luton 49 points last year
7 points required from 9 games and I’ll rest easy!4 -
Nathan Jones is an acquired taste. However the actual result last night justifies his decision making, and the result came about because of the work he has put in to the players and culture of the club since he arrived.
Nathan’s florid twitchiness and reactive nature is part of the package if it is results you’re after.
I once asked my eldest if he would rather have a beautiful Triumph Spitfire broken down on the side of the road waiting for the AA, or a dull Nissan Micra plodding to the destination.
Aesthetic aspiration made him say the Spitfire, but reflection made him say the Micra.3 -

We went down on 48 in 2020.I was reminded the other day (must’ve been on here), that we had a 5 pt lead over Barnsley going into the final three games. We’re not going to be in it this year now, I’m confident of that, but to have that lead going into the final three and still go down was pretty poor. I know there were a whole host of reasons as it the Covid season, Taylor not playing again etc, the nonsense behind the scenes.I really can’t call who out the clubs below us and QPR are going to end up in the bottom three. Could be a great end to the season0 -

I know Docherty has his limitations and we need a couple of better ball playing midfield additions in the summer. However, last night he showed how he can still be a valuable member of the squad next season.15

Agreed, the confusing thing is why it's taken 2 months for Clarke to actually take one!CharltonManor1966 said:
TBF that throw is a proper weapon that should be used more often. It also allows Carey to be at the edge of the box for a shot from a knock down. More please Clarkey?Er_Be_Ab_Pl_Wo_Wo_Ch said:What a superb set piece. Like a whistle it cleared 5 defenders, one of whom was dragged away from the goalmouth by Dykes' movement towards the thrower.
Most surprising was Coady's post-match comment that he didn't know Clarke possessed such a long throw, until that moment!
Having your top scorer taking them removes him from the goalmouth action, and defensively it's much better having a wingback out there4 -
Yep, there was an element of luck, in that Castledine appears not to be able to get a header on target to save his life, pretty much every shot they had on target was aimed straight at Mannion's midriff, and when he did have a rush of blood to the head and tried to go through 3 of his teammates in an attempt to get the ball, he was able to recover quickly enough to collect the follow-up. Coady was not quite so luckyCharlton and on said:Very pleased with the result and agree with many that it was a great defensive display.

That said, we absolutely earned that luck as a team, worked our arses off to keep Boro out of our box, block crosses and shots, and win free kicks to take the pressure off for a few seconds. It wasn't pretty, and I really wasn't sure we could hold out for as long as we did, but every single one of them should be proud that we did. 6 -
Wonder if he will keep the same 11 for oxford. Assume not but you never know.0

This time next season we will be 7 points of play offs5

Boro are a decent number 9 short of being a top Championship team. Against a low block defence, they don't have that physical presence and aerial ability in the box to score the ugly goals from set pieces.
Imagine Kiefer Moore in that side, he would have given Coady a torrid time.9 -

If we'd beaten Wrexham like the performance deserved, we'd currently be 4 points off play offs...4

Still glowing after that win. Fantastic battling performance and shows a real team spirit.
Just to add I don't give a stuff if we possibly helped Millwall go up. That's 'Borough's problem. Ours is to stay up and build again. And we are near enough to touch that goal now. Nothing else matters!

Excellent planning and execution by Nathan Jones. Brilliant strategy to bring just about everybody in and around the box at crucial times to wear out the opposition then attack on the break.Charlie Kelman should have buried the brilliant pass across the box from the right by Connor Coady who later went on to score from an excellent long throw. The starting line ups and the substitutions were spot on and very timely tactical decisions. To bring on Lloyd Jones, Amari Bell and Kane Ramsey were very timely indeed especially when we were under immense pressure in the closing minutes. Our players remained calm and focused right up until the final whistle.Although both sides gave away the ball too many times, we were very solid in defence and Will Mannion made a couple of excellent saves to keep us in the game till the final whistle.CAFC away travelling fans always give their 100% support.Full marks all round.3

It was Harry Clarke with the cross though. Great ball from Carey for him to run onto too.chaudhari211 said:Excellent planning and execution by Nathan Jones. I woke up this morning from a weird dream - we were playing Middlesbrough away with a make shift defence and we only ended up winning. Must have been the cheese late at night!Unbelievable, Jeff.6

Now, the main focus for last night was to set up not to lose, as it turned out, we went two points better, that defensive performance was so impressive, particularly impressed with Gough who showed such maturity and a calm head when needed, also Clarke had a great game as well, Doc and Coventry ran themselves into the ground, in fact it's almost unfair to single out any one player over another in what was such a good overall TEAM performance.
Next up is Oxford, and I am really looking forward to this one against a team that, lets be honest, has shown a surge in form lately and will not be an easy turnover, but at the same time feel we will turn in another match winning performance and reach that magic 50 point mark, this season should finish as it started on a high...COYR3 -

A big shout out to the travelling fans last night. Not sure if it’s already been mentioned and discussed but there were times when I kept thinking is that the Charlton fans making the noise, it can’t be there are too few of them up there and then catching the words and realising it was them. Obviously at the end there was no initial doubt whatsoever as to who it was 👏👏👏9

The thing is Kaminski would not come for any crosses at all, whatsoever.PeaksAndValleys said:What an absolute banger of a result that is. Proper team performance and we did a right job on them.
Thought the midfield was excellent and the make shift backline did well - Gough especially looks completely at home starting in the champ, did well positionally and stepped out nicely a few times. Excited to see more from him.
When the usual starters came into defence as subs they bossed it.
I think I might be the only one on here that doesn't think that was Mannion's best - thought he was fine and he keeps his place for me no question, but there were a few crosses he'd normally claim and didn't, plus a flap on one of the only times he did come. Few miskicks and putting defenders in trouble. Then had one save to make, decent stop onto the bar but if he let it in right over his head you'd question it. Again don't think it was bad, just not seeing the standout / MOM performance others are for this game.We look so much more assured with Mannion in goal! Like you say he absolutely deserves to keep his place! Kaminski needs to work on cross claiming, even if it’s not his game, he needs to make it his game to have any chance of taking back number 1 spot. I’m so pleased for Mannion!3
