Winter-January 2026 Transfer Window Rumours ...

Charlton have agreed a loan deal with Ipswich for defender Harry Clarke until the end of the season according to our old and trusted friend, Pete O’Rourke

Apparently the deal is done with Ipswich!4

15K a week are the estimationsSheikhYurKory said:I know Clarke’s brother in law.. I asked about the transfer and he just responded with 🤐, The only thing is, he is on serious money at Ipswich so I wonder how much we will be stumping up. Apparently a great bloke who gives 110% but he can also play a bit. Happy with the signing nonetheless.0 -
If there's one position where we HAVE to strengthen, and properly, it's the left side of defence, as we are so weak there in terms of numbers, especially with 2 of the players having injury issues and the other struggling.
That's where I would be spending most of our January budget. Elsewhere is less important. Yes of course we can strengthen everywhere on the pitch, but for example on the right of defence, Gough is a useful 3rd choice, and we can always recall Zach to give us another option. Similarly upfront, we have Godden on the verge of returning, so again we have options.3 -
You son of a gun @CB119

All we need to do is make sure we sign enough injury prone players on the cheap and then simply rotate them through injuries. For example:
Burke plays 3 games and gets injured - Clarke now starts
Clarke now plays 3 games and gets injured - Ramsay now starts.
Ramsay plays 3 games and gets injured - Burke is back fit.Repeat cycle.Seems fool proof.46 -
To be fair... Clarke is someone I've never heard of before... So no judgement on the signing from meBe interesting if he's here to replace Bree as suggested a few pages back, I'd be surprised if we dont sign both though, given that Jones said earlier in the window he wanted to sign an RCB, so guess this is to compete with Bree / Apter, as well as Ramsay / Burke given their fitness1

Or C)NabySarr said:If you’re signing players from clubs higher than us in the football pyramid then they obviously aren’t going to have played much or any football this season, otherwise they wouldn’t be availableScanlon is definitely a huge concern, but with Clarke I really don’t see the problem. You basically have a choice, sign someone who’s been playing every week in league 1 but as we’ve seen that might not mean they are good enough in the championship. Or you sign someone from the Championship like Clarke, he’s available because he’s out of favour so hasn’t played, but he is championship level. Personally I’d rather sign the championship level player that hasn’t played rather than a league 1 player playing every week. That is the choice we are having to make
You spend money & buy someone who is good, reliable & currently playing. Yes, it means paying more than you would necessarily like to but thems the breaks.
Weird how decades of transfer nomality seems to have gone out the window.4 -
Hope he can come in and do us a job till the end of the season, but looks another who loves a knock so I won’t hold my breath.2

I think there is a noticeable difference in how players with experience at this level handle the playing demands of the Championship. Burke, when fit, Bell and Rankin Costello seem to have that extra bit of nous, other players such as Miles are learning and in Miles case, taking on board what's required. A real step up.7

In the last two seasons Clarke played for a promotion winning Ipswich team, half a season with Ipswich in the Premier League and half a season with Sheffield United who lost in the playoff final.
I assume we’ll have done a proper medical assessment and passed him for match play. He’d be a very good asset to have for the rest of the season.21 -
Ok so after overpaying for a player that the selling club will be very reluctant to sell, why would the player playing regularly in the championship for a team higher in the table than us want to sign for Charlton?golfaddick said:

Weird how decades of transfer nomality seems to have gone out the window. If it was as easy and simplistic as you’re making it then there would have been a lot more championship signings this window. But it’s not. And that’s completely ignoring the financial rules that would stop us being able to go with this approach. Here in the real world things aren’t that simple3 -

All players get injuries, just because he’s had one this season doesn’t mean he’s injury prone9 -
That's Ramsey off then. 🙂4

I live in Ipswich so know a bit about Harry Clarke. He is an Ipswich boy so very popular with the Town fans. Was excellent two years ago when they got promoted, but then not really up to standard in the Premier League. Is now in a position where Ipswich have bought in a load of players who they hope might make it in the Premier League. But, he is great for the Championship - hard-working and athletic. I definitely hope this one goes17

No idea about this bloke but he must be ready to play only a nutcase would be signing injured players…… oh wait !!!!4

So someone from league one or two then? Presumably you'd then complain about them not being good enough?golfaddick said:

Maybe have a break from posting on this thread for a bit.6 -
We've never really spent substantial fees in January, last one was probably the Fraser/Aneke window under TS I guess???
I just can't see a situation where we go and spend seven figures on a LCB or something.2 -

Only if he has same medical assessment that all our signings back in the Summer had. Abbott has now left the building since the summer, so would there may be any change to that2 -

Last January, these nine players made a permanent move between two Championship clubs for some kind of fee:golfaddick said:

Matt Grimes
Matt Clarke
John Egan
Isaiah Jones
Morgan Whittaker
Aaron Connolly
Anis Slimane
Tom Bradshaw
Lewis Gibson
The only players on that list who’d I say were actually first team regulars at the club that sold them:
- Matt Grimes (Swansea to Coventry, £4m),
- Morgan Whittaker (Plymouth to Middlesbrough, £7m),
- Lewis Gibson (Plymouth to Preston, £2m).
Plymouth were rooted to the bottom of the table at 24th in January last year - Boro and Preston arguably just picked off their two best players as they were mostly already gone. Would people accept that strategy if we tried it with Sheff Wed or Oxford? Why would a good Oxford player like Brannagan or Currie want to jump ship to another relegation battler in mid January?
And selling Grimes to Coventry was widely viewed as a significant mistake by Swansea supporters - Grimes is already an integral piece of a promotion chasing Coventry team.5 -

Just below the Clarke article it sounds like Dykes will join Ipswich.MarcusH26 said:1 -
In all seriousness the stuff coming out about Clarke does sound largely positive. With our budget, we sign either the top end of League One (which hasn’t worked that well so far) or have to go for a bit of a Moneyball approach on players in this league and above. Clarke seems to be regarded as a solid Championship pro.Loans are where I think we should be looking to add that ‘X-Factor’.3

You mean like Rousillionswords_alive said:A professional keeps themselves fit, and may not have played in a while but will have kicked a ball in training. We can't afford to be too rigid. They fit our need, pass a medical, then they are in for me.5 -
It's called jobshare.YannTheMann said:When Nathan said about signing another 5 at the back after the Chelsea game I didnt think he meant 5 more defenders who have had injury struggles, ah well at least this way odds of probability means one in each position might be fit any given weekend1 -
I honestly don't "get" the Dykes to Ipswich rumour , they've got Hirst,Akpom,Azon and Szmodics in terms of central strikers plus a load of wingers that could probably play central if needed.15

Can echo some of the above comments as my mate’s Father in Law is Ipswich. Said he loves him. What he lacks in ability he more than makes up for in work rate. Championship is his ceiling but more than capable at this level3
