More of a CB isn’t he? If he’d only be cover for Bell then I doubt we’d have wanted him.

Birmingham fans were not keen on him. He’s got similar pace to Gillesphey so I don’t think he’d be a great signing for us even though he’s a better defender and better on the ball. He wouldn’t get in ahead of Bell

I think we only need to do one thing to stay in this division, and I emphasize stay, not prosper. That is to get a fit defensive back 6. Our bad run began and continued with the absences of Bell, Burke and Ramsay. This led to having to play TC, Apter and even Hernandez in defence -alongside Gillesphey, in most cases. None of them remotely up to it.
We can get by with our existing (and improving) strikers and our midfield, but not with a crap defence.
Sort this out and we will survive. Fail, and it won't matter what the rest of the team do, we will go down.
I get the impression that you don't realise how much we have missed Josh Edwards.

I do, but we did ok without him. I cannot see him being match fit any time soon. We need reinforcements before that.

Well we could have solved the issue in the summer instead of Burke and Apter , got in Caleb Taylor. Doing a great job for Millwall, tall quick CB and just bought property in Sidcup. Would have taken the pressure off the likes of Bell and Ramsay.
But an injury prone Luton man and an untried League 1 winger are not contributing enough.

Apter technically is one of the best in the squad but has suffered due to the imbalance of the team starting with the injury to Edwards. Needs to be playing in the last third.

And why would Caleb Taylor have signed for us instead of Millwall? He wouldn’t. We can’t beat established championship teams to players until we ourselves are established at this level

Exactly this, I’ve seen so many post saying we should get so and so or this team has signed this guy we should’ve been all over that, it’s silly to think that we could compete with some of these teams for certain signings or that they would even want to come

I am afraid however technically good he is, he is too lightweight for the Champ. He cannot play wingback for that reason, he is not even as good as TC there and TC cannot do it either.
In addition, Apter is a winger and NJ does not play with wingers.
I don't think Apter has a future with us and really, for his benefit as well, he should be moved on.

Early days though I know.
You'd like to have seen 1 or 2 in already by now. We have known for months we have been struggling and need reinforcements, window has been open a week, things shouldn't start moving just as it hits January 1st, wheels should have been turning for weeks before. You've seen other clubs manage to make movements so it is possible.

As usual though my expectations are on the ground. I am not expecting anything too exciting to strengthen our squad.

As soon as I read it would be a sensible window, that was that.
They almost certainly have been, almost all of the business that's been done so far has been by teams near the top of the league and as such having stronger hands and higher appeal to players.

If we were seeing rivals strengthening all around us I'd be more concerned but I'm not overly worried yet. Once the cup game is out of the way I hope things will start moving.

Norwich are never going to go down there squad is too good, we’ve proved with some of our players good in L1 doesn’t translate to good in the championship no guarantee Donley hits the ground running, and Cashin was hated at Birmingham and all the Blackburn fans are asking if he can play up front and commenting they need a striker rather than a CB somehow they’ve scored less than us.

It’s realistically 2 go down from us Oxford, Portsmouth and Blackburn. Pompey have lost a winger signed no one, Blackburn have signed a player in a position they’re not desperate for and Oxford have taken a player who couldn’t get a minute at Stoke and don’t even have a manager not worried about other sides business just yet.

Plus we’ve shown if we have our best team we can compete higher up the table the others haven’t and have been on a steady relegation pace

I disagree! For Blackpool he wasn’t playing as a winger and baring in mind throughout August he was one of our best players. He doesn’t possess pace but good on the ball & has a football brain unlike Campbell.

You do know he can bulk up in the gym right? Just because he's lightweight now at 22 doesn't mean he still will be at 23 or 25

Seems very early to give up on Apter for me, there must have been a plan behind signing him for the amount we did, I’m sure NJ knew what he was getting. Apter has been a victim of the injuries. As it stands we wouldn’t recoup the money spent on him as he’s been unable to get enough game time, so I don’t see us off loading him. I think this one is a slow burner and we will see him a bit more in time.

Don't think Apter is worth even considering off loading. There's plenty there to work with with him and I think he's going to get more of a chance once Edwards is back on the other flank.

Maybe even worth a look in the 10 role with players going off the boil there.

Once Edwards is back at LWB, for me Apter has to start at RWB.

Looked perfectly good there at the start of the season and coincided with some great results

It's harsh. He was one of our best players when Edwards was fit, since then and because of that he's barely played. But he came on a few weeks ago, crossed the ball and we scored.  If only TC made it look that simple.

I agree he has the 'lightweight look' but stats-wise he's got more tackles per 90 minutes than both Docherty and Coventry, not to mention Bree.

Did he actually play in the 10 role for Blackpool? And was he that good at it?

Played wide right , Carey 10/wide left. Blackpool fans mentioned when he signed that long term his best role might actually be as a 10.

Truthfully I’ve not seen that in him so far IMO, his link up play with Carey was very good at the start of the season.

What you’re forgetting is Charlton’s transfer policy is to buy potential from lower divisions for two reasons. The first is budget and the latter we are not attractive to more established championship players. We’ve been languishing league 1 for many years & are rebuilding. Let’s keep focused and be realistic!

Not forgetting anything they were two genuine questions as both I don’t know the answer to.🤷🏻‍♂️

All good breaking it down. The post was about being worried about teams around us signing players which they have is all.

Gallen was keen on Taylor and the player himself said Lloyd Jones was the best defender he played against last season. Was desperate to play championship football and knew no future at west brom.
We could have signed him but Gallen acted quickly while we only had eyes on Luton it seemed.

Maybe the likes of Edward’s and Godden coming back is part of the consideration in not diving in at the earliest opportunity - the closer they get to a return, the more confidence they’ll have in them so might affect where we bolster - me, i think a couple of specialist wingbacks and a powerhouse box to box midfielder - if Goddens comeback had / goes to shit then another striker but looks to be going well so I’d look elsewhere
Waiting for Godden, there is a play in that.

Who's to say we didn't go in for Taylor but he was more interested in an established Champ club that pays higher wages.
