POST-MATCH THREAD: Birmingham City v Charlton Athletic: Saturday 13th December 2025: KO 15:00
For this trip to the West Midlands, Nathan Jones once again shuffled the pack in an effort to find a way out of this five-game-losing streak. Karoy Anderson and Tanto Olaofe join Ibrahim Fullah in the starting eleven, with a rest for Tyreece Campbell and again for Captain Greg Docherty, both on the bench. Big-spending Birmingham sit five points ahead of us in the table and have quite the home record, making this another tough fixture.
This one kicked off with pyrotechnics for some bizarre reason. Without a colour clash, Charlton were in their home kit, backed by a decent away following.
The opening shot came from Birmingham, just short of two minutes in; a low blast the Kaminski did well to get down to. The ball was scooped out and cleared, finding its way up to Miles Leaburn. Leaburn’s pass forward threatened to find Tanto Olaofe in acres of space, but it was blocked away and the attack was easily muted.
A series of corners to the home side put pressure on the Addicks, but nothing much came of it. Then, on about ten minutes, Lloyd Jones went down needing treatment for some kind of knock to the head. He received treatment, then went down again only moments later, needing more medical assistance. Thomas Kaminski then went down with a suspect niggle, buying a bit more time for his centre half, and inviting taunts from the home side. Jones was deemed fit to return and the action continued.
On 22 minutes, Birmingham played some tidy passes around the Charlton area, resulting in a twenty yard shot that beat the rooted Thomas Kaminski only to strike the base of the post, with the resulting rebound merely stabbed into Kaminski’s arms. Some five minutes later, the Birmingham goal came. It was a set piece delivery driven into the box to meet the rising head of Christoph Klarer, the Birmingham big man. Kaminski could only watch as the ball looped over him and into the back of the net to put the home side up.
Birmingham were deservedly ahead. Their crisp passing and creative movement was a cut above our more pedestrian play, but they did look vulnerable at times trying to play out from the back and looked to be easily frustrated. That pressure told on 32 minutes when the Birmingham keeper’s out pass was sold short and Tanto Olaofe was able to cut it out and cross it to Miles Leaburn in the centre. The youngster’s shot was skied high above the bar under the pressure of the keeper diving to his feet. On the replay, Leaburn will rue his miss. A simple dink or deft touch would have been enough to equalise but it wasn’t to be and Birmingham were let off the hook.
A little before halftime, a couple of corners to the Addicks put a little pressure on the home side, but they ultimately came to nothing. A little complacency had set in for the home side since their goal, but they were able to see the half out one goal to the good.
The second half started much like the first finished. Charlton had a couple of half chances, the best of which was a Tanto Olaofe off-target header from ten yards, which he should probably done better with. Birmingham were sloppy in possession and the home supporters were audibly frustrated at times. Then came a double booking for Olaofe and the Birmingham keeper, as the result of a scuffle that saw Ryan Allsop drop down theatrically after a reaction from Olaofe over the keeper’s taunts. Birmingham made two changes in an effort to get back on top of the match, but the staccato tempo and scrappy style suited the visitors.
Nathan Jones made his own changes on about 64 minutes, with Joe Rankin-Costello coming on for Conor Coventry and Ibrahim Fullah making way for Tyreece Campbell. And it wasn’t long before the changes made a difference. Tanto Olaofe broke into the box through nutmegging his defender before blasting along the six yard line. The ball deflected off the keeper and into the path of Tyreece Campbell at the far post, who expertly blasted the ball in with his first touches on the ball. With that goal, the Addicks were level and Olaofe got the better of the keeper he had, moments before, had issue with.
The atmosphere in the ground had grown more frustrated, though the visiting supporters could be heard backing their team. But before long, the home side picked up a bit of momentum. On 71 minutes, Demarai Gray had a shot cannon off the crossbar and Birmingham began a period of pressure that threatened the Addick’s comeback. Nathan Jones turned to Greg Docherty to stabilise things, replacing Sonny Carey in the middle. A few more corners piled on the pressure, but nothing much came of it.
In the final five minutes of normal time more than a few of the Addicks were struggling for fitness. Nathan Jones turned to Harvey Knibbs and Josh Laquetabua for Karoy Anderson and Tanto Olaofe. On 89 minutes Knibbs gave away a free kick, at the left edge of the box, some twenty yards out. Demarai Gray swung it in with his right, but it was met with a flying Kaminski save. The resulting corner was dealt with, but the next phase of play, a couple of minutes into the six of added time, saw Birmingham come close with an effort from the right. A bit of back and forth brought this one to a close, honours even.
What looked to be another defeat was salvaged in the second half by a battling performance. Birmingham are a decent side, but somewhat fragile and the character shown by the injury-plagued Charlton side was immense. We limped through this one at times, though we certainly deserved our hard won point. Birmingham supporters won’t be happy. For some reason (I suppose it’s the money), they have high expectations and weren’t shy in voicing their discontent. Whereas, we’re limping along, looking to stop the rot, they’re expecting to kick on. Tyreece Campbell should take comfort in his goal: he was in the right place at the right time and showed the composure we’ve been looking for in front of goal. Conversely, Miles Leaburn won’t be happy with his fluff in front of goal. Hopefully, he’ll channel his anger in the way that Tanto Olaofe did in inspiring our goal and play more of a key role going forward! This one was a solid, needed point at a tough place to play.
Birmingham 1 Charlton 1

Good Point - unlucky Birmingham fans. Enjoyed that second half.

Proud of the whole team battling today. That’s what Charlton is all about.50

That was a proper Nathan Jones performance for the last 60 mins, that’s the football that keeps us up20
-
Would have gladly taken a point there if we were in our early season form, to take one after our current run is superb

Birmingham/Millwall/Leeds/Cardiff fans are all the same ,fuck em - gods shit arses.24

Much better second half, but we did make a meal out of it!Anderson motm for me- didn’t stop fighting for it!
thought JRC did well when he came on, as did doc.
We struggle when Tanto and Leaburn play, let alone when they’re playing together - realistically both of them are 3rd and 4th choice but you’d hope they’d be doing so much better!Hopefully we’ve stopped the rot now and can go on a more positive run7 -
Fingers crossed that that is the "rot stopping" result we needed.
Anderson showing his worth and Campbell scored.
Now we need to get back to winning games.26 -
A much needed result to stop the rot today. A draw away at Birmingham feels like a win given recent performances.
If the Charlton fan who was manhandled by the police officer after our equaliser happens to be reading, you should be making a complaint. His actions were completely out of line. I don't know what you said to stop him from removing you from the ground, but throwing a double fist pump in the air while looking at a Birmingham fan is not an offence. Especially given that said fan spent 90 minutes yelling abuse and throwing obscene hand gestures towards us. I can only assume the copper was a Blues fan.9 -
Will post here as my edit was timed out in the match thread;
No points lost or gained ongolfaddick said:Lost points on Pompey & Norwich, but they were both at home.
Gained points on Blackburn, Oxford & Swansea.
Over all happy with today.
Portsmouth as we also beat Blackburn at home,
nor Swansea as we also lost at Stoke and by a worse margin.
Norwich gained on us against Southampton at home.
We haven't played a game corresponding to the other fixture, (yet to go Oxford or play Preston at home).
Only gain for us is where a side went to B'ham and lost, against our draw today.2 -
Unfortunately couldn’t make today, followed on the thread.Point from Birmingham is a great result, stopped the free fall. Look forward to Oxford with renewed optimism.
Well done to the lads for what seems a hard won point.4 -

Great to stop the rot before the biggest game of the season so far. TC has needed dropping for a long time and he’s shown today that he can have more impact as a sub. Olaofe should have had two assists and caused plenty of problems so keep him in.
I’m very critical of Anderson but thought that was easily his best game for us.10 -
Get in.
less said about leaburns finish the better but thought he battled hard and caused them
problems was much the better / bigger handful of the two but both worked hard
TC off the bench low and behold
Did Not foresee that, great result and very happy4 -
Excellent result. Regardless of our run of form you’d say a point away at Birmingham is a good thing, we couldn’t even manage that last season. I’m hopeful that Jones decided to give Bell a little extra rest ahead of being ready for Oxford as that match is huge. Oxford, Norwich and Pompey next three games, if we’ve got Bell and Kelman back for those and we can get 6 points I think we’ll suddenly feel a lot better going in to the New Year. At the very least though it has to be 2 points or we’re going to be getting very nervous7

Took one for the team today…… Cashed out for £804

A really well deserved, battling point. Outplayed for much of the first half but we never gave an inch and we quite possibly edged the second half.
If inly Miles Leaburn had taken that golden chance he blazed over, that could have been a win.
But it's a point, at a place with a great home record, and it stops the losing streak. Let's beat Oxford next week and start looking up again.9 -
TC reluctant to go to the traveling fans when he scored. Clearly visible from TV coverage, even when pushed that way by one of our players (not sure who). Understandable for the grief he has been getting from a significant number. Also shows what a sensitive soul he is, and possibly why that grief can be damaging. Hopefully he kicks on and can get back to a more natural forward, out-ball position with other players returning.29

Great point to stop the rot going into the next three games1

Cracking result given our recent run of form. Although Brum took the lead and were the better team in the first half, I didn’t think we played that badly, just weren’t working the ball well when we got possession.
Every single player played for the shirt today, and I know Leaburn has had a bit of flack in recent weeks and missed a sitter today, but I thought he epitomized our battling spirit alongside the ever dependable Lloyd Jones.Don’t underestimate how well the players did not to let their heads go down after going a goal behind. After 5 defeats on the bounce that could’ve easily been goodnight against a team who are strong at home.Next week is huge. I am sure TC will start, but I pray Jones does start him in the same team as Fullah. We had so much more balance with him as a left footed player, playing the LWB role. I appreciate it will be a big ask of Fullah to do it again, but I don’t want to see us go back to square pegs in round holes, or hope at the very least Rousillon is fit to start. We’re not out of the woods yet with the injuries, but I would go with the same team again next week. The away supporters really deserved that as well. Can’t have been easy if you’ve been going since Wrexham12 -
Huge point…well done the lads, battled on till the end, that’s all we can ask of them at mo with the patched up side…let’s get some of our 1st team back & the points to safety will come…❤️🤍5

As I predicted no points for December absolutely delighted they got a point.9

Yes I saw that. He clearly wasn't happy even though he scored and certainly didn't want to celebrate with the fans.swords_alive said:TC reluctant to go to the traveling fans when he scored. Great to see the cameras focus in on the Jamaica flag dedicated to Norm at the end. Well done those fans.21

Please stop giving all the credit to our manager and players.
All I had to do was go for a win for Birmingham in the Prediction League and hey friggin’ presto.22 -
A fantastic point ! Next 3 games are enormous for us. Fullah, Anderson and Tanto deserve to retain their starting spots. Anderson my MOM for us today imo he was outstanding9
-
That was a proper away end that got the boys over the line. It was non stop all second half and it makes a difference.
A much needed point and hopefully some confidence in the side ahead of a massive couple of weeks.
I had a fiver on a draw and Millwall lost. Decent day!

Was seriously worried at half time, but pleased with the fightback, the desire to get something out of the game and the tenacity to keep going.
Pleased to see Campbell coming off the bench rather than having to do the full 90. He works hard and I think could do with a rest. Obviously, glad to see him get off the mark as well.
I do think Leaburn might also do with a bit of a rest. He's not the same since coming back from injury. I can't quite put my finger on it. Don't know whether he's still carrying a knock or whether he's lost a bit of confidence but he's definitely not up to the level he was before. Slower, and as we sadly saw today, not making the right decisions.
Pleased to see Fullah get a start. He might not have set the world alight, but he's earned his place in the first XI.
Thought Rankin-Costello looked good when he came on.9 -
Yeah that was nice. Pleased the fans stayed to clap the players and rightly so.swords_alive said:Great to see the cameras focus in on the Jamaica flag dedicated to Norm at the end. Well done those fans.4
