Why does T.Campbell keep getting selected

I have been a Charlton supporter for 58 years now. I don't usually 'want to have a say' but I am intrigued what everyone else thinks about the T. Campbell situation. Without doubt NJ is the best manger since Curbs but what on earth does he see in Campbell? Stoke HT- TC no crosses, no going passed his man, tracking back hardly ever. The same every match. The past 16 games Goals-1 Assists 0. Jogs around and every game we have to play with 10 men. NO URGENCY at all. Why does he keep getting selected.

Sorry that should have read Assists 1 Goals 00

Why does this need its own thread, when there is already a TC thread?7
-
And a match thread for the game currently underway?7
-
TC thread has disappeared for me - warming up my 20 games no goals post and disappointed.0
-
He plays because our other options are all crap as well. We have 4 forwards all of them are as poor as each other8

The TC thread has seemingly been removed, initially I thought for tidying up as there was an atrocious and inflammatory post after the Southampton game, but it’s not reappeared for some reason.ForeverAddickted said:Why does this need its own thread, when there is already a TC thread?5 -
The honest answer is because I and others are working our proverbials off at the moment and this site is taking up enough time as it is. Let’s just use this to discuss TC for nowLargeAddick said:

It wasn’t a criticism, I was just answering the question posed.AFKABartram said:

Jones is too stuck in his ways and it's annoying. No idea why Apter can't be given a go in the TC roll up front, least he runs at players and has a eye for goal. Putting Rob at wing is just a joke. Failing that even given Hernandez a go there and not at bloody wing back wither. TC looked good when he came on against Ipswich, he has started every game since and has looked really poor.3

Everything we’ve achieved so far this season has been based on passion and graft. I don’t mean to insult our players, far from it, but they aren’t on the same level as most of the opposition in terms of skill. From my pov T.C. has given loads of both and that more than justifies his selection. His little bit of aggression that lead to a subdued rendition of his song during the Southampton game was pretty much the only bit of light for me barring the consolation goal.8

He's pretty pony in this league so far, doesn't help he's one of our only pacy players too so other teams just double up on him. Early season form had Apter on the other side exploiting the space created by TC being doubled up, so creating space, opportunity and chances for others. Bree isn't bursting into space the same way Apter was and therefore our already pretty impotent attack is completely flaccid for the most part. For us to do well we need more pace across the entire team, as it stands TC is the only rapid option we have so he gets played every game

And that ball was out of play and the goal should have been chalked off, in which case it would be zero assists and zero goals.gpf said:Sorry that should have read Assists 1 Goals 0
Contrast that with what opposing wide players have done to us this week, they have ripped us apart!
Last season we had Small who wasn't afraid to take the defender on, and actually produce something meaningful, be it a cross, a corner, or a shot.
TC and Bree, constantly play it backwards. Bree doesn't have the pace or trickery and seems to be in the team for his set pieces.
TC has pace and trickery, and we've seen what he can do when he's confident and in form.
But he hasn't been in form for many weeks and the more he plays, the more his confidence ebbs away.
Jones needs to give him a rest.5 -
Lose a couple of games and turn on the promising young player who was no worse than anyone else last night. He played last night because NJ wanted to play with wing backs and Hernandez hasn’t been great there. He’s not immune to criticism but do we need to try to obliterate his confidence. If Jones thinks there is a better option than TC then Jones will play them21

Just checking, but you were the fella calling for Jones to be sacked a year ago, weren't you?Nicholas said:Jones is too stuck in his ways and it's annoying. He's not quite skilful enough to deal with being double marked during games. When Fullah came on vs West Brom he came alive as he was freed up again.7

It's about to be 4 games. And he's been pretty ineffective for weeks, so it's not like any reaction is knee jerk.follett said:Lose a couple of games and turn on the promising young player who was no worse than anyone else last night. I'd argue that with all the games he's played plus the internationals and travelling he needs a rest at Coventry anyway. Might actually do him some good and then he can be fresh for Portsmouth.5 -
Yeah I was. What’s your point?Off_it said:

I’m still convinced he’s being given instructions to slow the game up to allow runners to arrive and that’s why he doesn’t take his man on.
Watch our attacking play on both wings. So often what happens is wide player gets forward towards the edge of the box, stops his run and passes it 5 yards back to (usually) Coventry who then plays it onto the runner, crosses (rare) or resets back to the defence. Yesterday there were times where TC was playing the Coventry role in that routine over on the right, it’s a clear pattern of play.
Second half he actually took his man on a couple of times and played an early cross both of which looked dangerous. Some of that is the state of the game but I’m sure he was told to be more free.
He’s at his best when acting on instinct, the assist for Leaburn, what was effectively the assist for Carey, the cross yesterday, his goals last season. All of them are outside the usual structure of how we play and have been seemingly based on his gut3 -

Yeah that's the major flaw in the pattern but outside of TC we don't have a huge amount of pace on the pitch to play any quickerpaulsturgess said:

He gets selected because he is the only player who drives the game forward. He doesn't get enough decent crosses into the box or always beat his man but we have no real alternative.3

Apter on the left is the alternative.CafcWest said:He gets selected because he is the only player who drives the game forward. He doesn't get enough decent crosses into the box or always beat his man but we have no real alternative.2 -
Best game he's has had this season was off the bench against Ipswich. Both he and Leaburn were an absolute terror for their defence, but have both been largely ineffective when starting.
TC struggled last season against the better League One teams, so it's no real surprise that he hasn't lit the championship alight. The fact is that none of our forwards are creating or scoring enough.3 -
He's only ever played 8 games on the left compared to 82 on the right, it's not a serious optionBedsaddick said:

All our strikers are better off the bench because either 1) the starters have tired out the defence or 2) the defencd has become too relaxed because the games already goneCroydon said:Best game he's has had this season was off the bench against Ipswich. Versatility would be the answer to the ops question. Can do a job in 3/4 different positions, maybe not as well some but can never thought the young lad’s attitude when playing. He’s a winger for me. Reminds me of Shaun Newton at his age, but we don’t a play 4-4-2 anymore. Is he good enough at this level? Well considering it’s his first season at it, then it’s certainly been a leaning curve for him, as it has Leaburn as an example
Jones likes him as a player, and will continue to play him until better options come available to him in selection3 -
Think he needs taking out the team on Saturday if possible. He has talent and some admirable attributes but at the moment he’s struggling. I really don’t think it’s helped him when he’s been away with Jamaica, returns to Sparrows Lane on the Thursday then starts on the Saturday. With only one assist this season and no goals I really did expect much better from him. I’m certainly not writing him off as it’s his first taste of Championship football and it takes time to adjust to it but at the moment he’s bang average.5

That Ipswich game helped the most, because at the time we were ahead and Ipswich rather than trying to keep it at 0-3, were trying to get a goal to get back into the game, and so Campbell was able to exploit the space. When he starts its 0-0, or when we're losing and he's playing, the opposition don't need to take so many risks so are tighter at the backfenaddick said:

TC isn’t the problem, he was playing well enough and contributing to a team that was in the top 6 not long ago. Our issue is the lack of balance to our team due to defensive injuries. Once that is sorted the whole team will look better again, TC included
What is a problem is how some fans seem to be so keen to jump on anything TC does wrong (or even blame him when he’s done nothing wrong). There are plenty of others players who have been a lot worse over the last 2 games but for some reason it’s all TC’s fault17
