POST-MATCH THREAD: Stoke City V Charlton Athletic: Tuesday 25th November 2025: KO 19:45
Looking to bounce back from the drubbing at the weekend, Charlton hoped this evening’s fixture represents a chance at redemption. Stoke, however, are near the top of the table, a change from their struggles last season, and were surely sensing blood in the water. Changes in the Charlton first eleven saw Carey playing further forward, with Docherty, Berry, and Coventry behind and James Bree coming back on the right. The press was effective in the opening minutes and Charlton looked full of vigour but any optimism was misplaced and short lived.
Before the 3 minute mark Charlton had conceded. Sorba Thomas’s cross-cum-shot flew twenty-five yards straight over Thomas Kaminsky’s head and into the back of the net. Then the unthinkable. Within five minutes of kick off Charlton were down two, after Lloyd Jones charged out—perhaps overplaying his hand though he was fouled through a strong nudge—missed the tackle, leaving the back line exposed. It was a relatively easy, barely contested shot that left Kaminsky rooted to his line and the Addicks, once again in a hapless position, two nil down after consecutive goals in the opening five minutes. Stoke have the best defensive record in the league, so any wish for a result would represent something of a difficult, uphill battle.
An issue with the referee’s equipment gave Nathan Jones a chance to pull his troops in for a chat. After the restart there was a bit of formation change, with Tyreece Campbell moving over to the right and Sonny Carey over to the left. James Bree and Macauley Gillesphey were now a part of a back four.
The Addicks worked themselves back into the match a little for the next twenty minutes. Until another Sorba Thomas deep cross from the left beat Kaminsky again! The keeper will argue that Kayne Ramsay’s leap obscured his sight of the ball but, regardless, he was beaten from twenty five yards again from a cross that was on target. When it rains, it pours.
To see out the half, a tweak in formation was made that saw Gillesphey moved back to left-sided centre half and Ramsay moving out to the left. Deck chairs and all that… The remainder of the half was stop and start but we did look a little more competitive in that formation. The half finished without a Charlton shot on or off target and no attacks of consequence.
We’re no longer well organised and tough defensively. We’re consistently exposed and don’t have enough to recover. Without a miracle, this match was once again over in the first half.
Within the first couple of minutes of kick off in the second half Charlton managed a shot… and it was on target (if a bit hopeful). Miles Leaburn managed to fashion a half volley on the turn after creating a but of space off the back of a Coventry free kick.
On 53 minutes, the Addicks broke forward through Tyreece Campbell that resulted in a Luke Berry shot in the box that went narrowly wide. Signs of progress were there, though Stoke also had their moments.
Just shy of 60 minutes on the clock changes were made, with Greg Docherty coming off for Harvey Knibbs, Conor Coventry replaced byTop Ranking-Costello, and Tanto Olaofe coming on for Tyreece Campbell to form a back four and a diamond in midfield. With the changes, though the individuals that came on did okay, we seemed to lose some of the little bit of momentum we’d generated.
Stoke had a few half chances but the score remained at 3-0 and the home side seemed content with that, while the visitors had no choice but to accept it. There were chances in the final twenty minutes for the Addicks, with Luke Berry and Tanto Olaofe testing the keeper without threatening any real comeback or change in momentum.
In a final roll of the dice, Nathan Jones made changes up top with Luke Berry and Miles Leaburn replaced by Karoy Anderson and Rob Apter. Olaofe went up to the lone striker role and things were re-jigged for the third time. Anderson did his chances of appearing in future no harm with his usual energy causing Stoke some problems as he put himself about at both ends of the pitch but there really wasn’t much to the rest of this.
The travelling supporters deserve a mention. They were loud and did their part when it would have been easier to shrink into the background after the calamitous start. But they were heard right the way through to the end.
It’s been a tough week to say the least. With high-flying Coventry CIty set to host the Addicks at the weekend the south Londoners will need to steel themselves for perhaps the toughest challenge yet. Three losses on the trot certainly won’t help morale going into December. The plucky Addicks need a Christmas miracle or, failing that, set up to turn the afternoon into something more like a war of attrition to grind out an ugly scoreless draw.
Stoke 3 Charlton 0
Over to you.

Defence look like strangers. Need a long hard look at themselves. Write off the game against COV use it to maybe look at a new formation. Injuries have truly ruined us as well1

It’s exciting to think how many we’ll let in during the first half on Saturday….I’m feeling four…

Been worked out a bit. All oppositions need to do is start quick, get a couple of goals and then we've got no response so they can just cruise through the rest of the game12

I propose we start these threads 10-15 mins after kick off.9

The fans were great … that’s about it really9

Gillephey a total liability at the moment.AberystwythAddick said:Defence look like strangers. Need a long hard look at themselves. Write off the game against COV use it to maybe look at a new formation. Injuries have truly ruined us as well12 -
Nope they can't do it on a wet Tuesday in Stoke11

At least we’re conceding all the goals in the first half so people have an hour plus to cool down.13

I’ve remortgaged the house and put everything on Coventry hitting double figures against us.
My next post will be from the Maldives 😎11 -

Painful evening, we’re in a sticky patch and whilst Jones is a religious man, the football gods are clearly not with us at the moment.
Cool heads required. Spells like this show whether you’ve a good tight knit group or not.Keep the faith32 -
I really lucked out with those Ipswich away tickets.2

TC, Leaburn, Docherty and Gillesphey all need to be dropped. If we’re sentimental we’ll be back in league one. Also, Mannion can’t be any worse than Kaminski.
Owners need to get their cheque book out now for January otherwise we’re doomed.

Looking forward to someone coming on to complain about the ref .......1

Not even going to address that shit show.
8 goals conceded since the return from the international break with our worst 2 performances of the season. Who’s next? Coventry away who have scored 47 goals in 17 games and are 10 points clear at the top. Fuck my life. Took us 36 games last season to score 47 goals.
4 losses on the bounce come 5pm Saturday. We’re bang in trouble.7 -
Two second half draws in a row, that's gotta be worth a point right?15

We knew we were limited and playing ugly at times. There s a limit to how far that gets you and I think we are now seeing and feeling what that looks like. It should pass around January time, get a few reinforcements in if necessary, but it will still be ugly and based in a large part on team effort. Then hopefully we have enough to stay up which was always the main objective.8

Like on Saturday we just seemed asleep from the off. It’s always then an uphill battle when you concede early. The problem is we don’t have the personnel to make many changes so we’re stuck in this doom loop until players are fit again1

Well fuck that.
I was expecting losses these three games, but I still find myself disappointed in the manner of which that result has come about. Maybe it's just because it's over before it's really begun, and then watching it feels more like punishment than enjoyment.
Just one more to get through lads/lasses ...3 -
Hopefully Bell wasn't putting into the fray because he's being kept back for Saturday.
Defence, most notably Gillesphey suffers when he's not got proper support from the Left Wing-Back
Beauty is, after these two games, we can almost write off getting anything against Coventry. But in true Charlton frustrating fashion, until the home side get that first goal, you could almost expect us to go there and do the impossible.
First goal was even more crucial tonight, what with Stoke's defensive record this season so far.
We also needed to at least try and keep it tight after Saturday's defeat against Southampton.
We were unable to do either... The only comfort you can truly take, is that apart from the second goal, the others were a bit of a fluke and on most occasions, probably wouldn't end in the back of the net... The annoyance is that when we go a goal down, our heads drop too easily, which was probably even easier tonight after Saturday - A bit like Ipswich away, I imagine if we'd kept it tight until HT, we might have caused problems of our own in the second half... But at the moment that Ipswich performance is a long way away...
We must have done some dodgy deal to win that game, as we've not really looked at the races ever since.
Long way to go this season... Long way to go... We'll have a few more ups and downs yet - 21st remains the target.3 -

Injuries and i think other clubs have worked us out now. Gonna have to show what they, mainly Nathan Jones is all about. I think he and the players can turn it around but for a side so proud of our defensive record we need to get that back cos we are never going to have the goals to blitz through.2

Mannion never deserved to lose his place anyway.

I’d drop Kaminski for the next one. Unacceptable to beaten like that for the third, needs to be held accountable. Mad how quickly and the manner in which we’ve capitulated in these last 2 games. Their confidence will be rock bottom so massive respect to the fans for being in full voice despite the result. This team and Jones have a lot of credit in the bank after the last year, but he and they have to show a bit more resilience.I get injuries have decimated us down the left and we’re exposed a bit as a team now, but be ugly and harder. The last two games have shown a very worrying soft side to our game. Coventry are flying, but I pray Jones does the sensible thing on Saturday and just makes us horrible to play against. Dark arts, gamesmanship, physical and if we get beat we get beat, but we’ve really folded in the last two, to repeat that would be unacceptable4

Shitty runs can happen to anyone in this league (with the notable exception of Coventry) Hopefully we end this bad run soon- pity it's Coventry on Saturday though!
Our support was magnificent, you'd have thought we were winning 3-0 and were the home team- they deserved so much better. Kudos to them all.5 -
Hope you remortgaged and piled it on Stoke , stick it all on Coventry saturday , like taking candy from a baby ..
we are offering less than nothing atm and the warning signs have been there ...
graft and tenacity and a complete lack of skill means we have no goal threat and could easily be dragged in to the relegation battle in the coming weeks .
Kaminsky has done ok recently but that error for the 3rd is just pathetic , pretty much like what we are atm
tough times ahead but we've been punching for a while

Don't tell me everybody, just a bad day at the office, rather like Saturday, and deep joy we have the league leaders away in Coventry on Saturday...things can only get better.
Amazingly though we're still only three points of top six, we'll be fine ...🤷♂️0 -
Have a feeling Will mannion is going to get thrown right under the bus on Saturday behind that defense at the moment at Cov, but kaminski had a shocker there.0

You just know charlton will surprise us all and inflict coventrys first home defeat of the season5
