As much as the players have to take some responsibility, Jones has to accept that the selection has killed us there. Within 5 minutes you could see we were getting dragged all over the place and being cut through like the proverbial knife in warm butter. No reaction from the bench until we are 4-0 down and even then we are asking a player who has had zero game time to come on and stop the rot. One change was not enough, if I can see that the midfield is the issue, why the hell is Anderson not coming on to give us some legs in there? If Southampton go for the jugular here I fear for us.

Absolute shit show. Proper wake up call. We are so dreadfully slow, second to everything. A mark of how much better they are is that they've got five goals from four different players, but none of them are even their best  player.

Do you think Southampton fans will be annoyed that they havent kept a clean sheet.

Of course not. Because they can score more than 1 or 2.
Don’t think the owners are going to drop £20m on couple of strikers and the £20m in wages needed to have a prolific strike force, so why keep banging on about it. It’s never going happen.
Scienza the left winger was £9m on his own. We're never ever going to spend that kind of money.
  • Is it fair to say that NJ's version of Bazball hasn't gone too well that half?

This is a huge wake up call -

I can't see what can be done as we have so few goals in us -

I'd shut up shop and drop deep.

Try and limit it to -4 goal difference.

The system will be exposed again if we come out in the same shape.

Strangely the first game where Leaburn has been winning most of his duels against the back line, but I don’t think we’ve taken advantage of that.

Macca is not a player who can be left with no-one in front of him. They’re killing us with him at left back with no protection in front.

    Hernandez really disappointing.

They want us to press and are setting traps all over the pitch. Their 3rd, we had 3 players pressing their 6 yard line, which brought the midfield too far forward and Lloyd Jones into CM.

Great play from them but so naive from us.

Can’t help but feel that NJ hasn’t shown Southampton enough respect and the sentiment of the game has got to him. I can’t think of a time in the last 18 months that we’ve been so open and looking at where Ramsay and Macca are positioned, it feels tactical rather than player error.

The sad fact is that Saints are strong, fluent and have some quality players that look like winners.

    As for us...

The point is that Docherty, Leaburn, Campbell, Gillesphey etc are League 1 players, playing in the Championship.

Love him for Wembley. Great second half of last season.

Sadly, not someone we should ever be placing trust on in the Championship.

Feel sorry for Southampton. That's the worst time you can  concede a goal on the stroke of half time.

Southampton are playing the kind on football I thought we’d be seeing most games at the Valley in the Championship. Their movement and passing has been spot on , allied to having players comfortable on the ball, confident in running at a back pedalling defence.
We have our limitations, particularly midfield pace, and an unusualy jittery defence which has been cruelly exposed . Time to batten down the hatch and  ride out the storm and write this one off.
It won’t fill anyone with confidence but we need to revisit our expectations that most of us held at the start on the season  and secure our place for next, then upgrade our players again

Their caretaker manager should thank us for making sure he gets the job permanently.

Ok - here we go -

Brace yourself this is going to be very rough.

    I reckon 8-1 finish

And it's quips like that that makes Charlton Life so enjoyable even on days like this!

What he's always done - flatter to deceive. Jones's favourite tho, that's why he's playing.

When Hernandez pulled the ball back to the edge of the box I was amazed that someone was in a great position to pass to for a shot. Then I saw it was Docherty - the *last* player you'd want it to be.

Just shows how wrong we were to sell Darren Bent. Chickens have finally come home to roost.
He's 41 now but still might have more pace than Leaburn

NJ got it wrong today being too open on the flanks although most of the goals have come through the middle I know. Midfield has been woeful. TC too. At least Miles is putting in the effort. Need to win this half to get a bit of pride back. Afterwards, need to write it off as a bad day at the office, don't dwell on it and go again Tuesday.

Docherty's body language in the tunnel not good - looks close to tears and massaging the back of his head.

We have been out classed by a poor premiership side. Every one their players looks like Eusane Bolton in foot races against ours. They get 5, or 6 men into the box when attacking, we are lucky if we have one when we attack

Nathan Jones with a lovely little sprint up the sideline.

Looked faster than Docherty and Gillesphey. Should sub himself on.
