MATCH THREAD : Charlton Athletic V Southampton : Saturday 22nd November 2025 : KO 12:30
Hi everybody and welcome to today's Match Thread…
So after the enforced, and most would say welcome International break, we are back on home ground today when we welcome Southampton onto The Valley pitch in what I see as a very interesting, testing, and potentially enjoyable encounter against a Southampton side who have just won two on the bounce, immediately after sacking their manager.
The Saints currently sit 17th on a tally of 18 points after 15 games, 8 places and 5 points adrift of us, Interim boss Tonda Eckert has claimed back-to-back victories over QPR and Sheffield Wednesday and seems to have steaded the ship a little, no doubt Nathan will be looking forward to this one, and get a win against one of his old sides Southampton, and keep the Saints fans quiet…
We've met on 63 previous occasions, winning 18, the Saints winning 28, and the remaining 17 encounters ending all square, Southampton ran out 2-0 victors when the teams last met in April 2011 on the south coast.
Nathan confirmed in his pre-match press conference that the illness which had impacted the squad before the international break has now fully cleared, and regarding fitness, "Everyone is a lot closer being two weeks down the line, whether they're ready to start or impact or not, we'll see." The visitors will be without Shea Charles and Ross Stewart, though Elias Jelert, Cameron Bragg, Sam Edozie and Cameron Archer could all return.
Team news…
Rob Apter, Greg Docherty, Onel Hernández and Miles Leaburn return to the Addicks' starting line-up this afternoon
They replace Southampton loanee James Bree, with Ibrahim Fullah, Harvey Knibbs and Tanto Olaofe moving to the substitutes bench..
Kayne Ramsay, Lloyd Jones and Macaulay Gillesphey will start in a back three in front of Thomas Kaminski.
Apter and Hernández are expected to operate as wing-backs. Skipper Docherty joins Conor Coventry and Sonny Carey in midfield, while Leaburn is likely to partner Tyreece Campbell up front.
Fullah, Knibbs and Olaofe are joined on the bench by Will Mannion, Josh Laqeretabua, Keenan Gough, Joe Rankin-Costello, Karoy Anderson and Luke Berry.
Charlton: Kaminski; Ramsay, Jones, GIllesphey; Apter, Carey, Coventry, Docherty (c), Hernández; Campbell, Leaburn
Subs: Mannion, Laqeretabua, Gough, Rankin-Costello, Anderson, Berry, Knibbs, Fullah, Olaofe

Its good to be back... Crazy how tight the League is at the moment, could possibly end up around either 4th or 14th by 5pm2
-
Transport issues have put the kibosh on me getting to this. Gutted.
My gut feeling is a resurgent Saints and a jaded, depleted home side is going to make this a tough watch.
But Nathan always seems to make us competitive, so let's see.2 -
Need something to cheer on after this morning's debacle. COYR!!!3

Bit worried I cant see Lloyd Jones in this video... Jokes aside Miles is available for selection it seems

Currently on CATV0 -
Have to see if 3-5-2 is the actual "on paper" line-up or whether we're going for a back four with Ramsay at Right-Back
It wouldnt surprise me either way0 -
I quite like it. Nostalgicfenaddick said:Very attacking. Hate the graphic, rubbish tie in with Panini2 -

NJ being interviewed currently1

Glad to see Apter given a chance as he will feel he has a lot to prove I’m sure. Surprised Hernandez gets ahead of JRC I can only assume NJ really doesn’t rate him0

Does anyone know if Ronnie thinks Campbell should be dropped cos I don’t think he’s mentioned it .5

Depends who Jones feels can play at Left Wing-Back though, might have gone with Campbell myself and put Fullah ahead of him.AndyG said:Glad to see Apter given a chance as he will feel he has a lot to prove I’m sure. Surprised Hernandez gets ahead of JRC I can only assume NJ really doesn’t rate him
Wont be surprised if we see that later on during the game though.
Given what happened at Hull, I think the worst thing that can happen for Apter today is his lack of defensive duties0 -
its on CATV stream too, not sure it's meant to be?ForeverAddickted said:Nathan Jones currently on Sky Sports1 -
If we win today it will be another Jones master class. Not impossible.2

One minute ago I was worried if Jones was looking a bit... well dead... Now it looks like he's hit the sunbed a bit too much3 -
On my way, hoping this can cheer me up after the shambles in the cricket.
Attacking wing backs and lineup generally. Let's see how it goes.2 -

Must admit to be very nervous about today Southampton have won both games since changing manager so could have turned a corner. No points today and looking at our next 2 games we could be firmly in the bottom half in a weeks time. 3 points though and pressure off on Tuesday0
