    UEFA playoffs pots:

Pot 1: Italy, Denmark, Turkey, Ukraine

Pot 2: Poland, Czechia, Wales, Slovakia

Pot 3: Ireland, Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo

Pot 4: Romania, Sweden, North Macedonia, Northern Ireland

The draw will be held on Thursday at 12.

If Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland all end up in different paths, we could still have five home nations at the World Cup.
Sweden will be a very dangerous pot 4 side to get drawn against if they have Isak and Gyokeres fit for the play offs in March.

"Teams will be seeded based on the FIFA rankings due out today. The teams ranked first and second will be seeded and automatically allocated to play-off final 1 and 2, respectively.
The remaining four teams will be unseeded and will be allocated to the first available match (match 1, then 2). The two CONCACAF teams will be placed into separate paths, as per FIFA's general draw constraint"

As of last month the rankings were:

    Iraq 57
    Congo 60
    Jamaica 68
    Bolivia 76
    Suriname 126
    New Caledonia 150

Iraq and Congo will probably climb up the rankings a bit given their play off wins, so they should be seeded and go directly into each final.

Jamaica can't face Suriname, so unless i'm mistaken they are likely to face either Bolivia or New Caledonia in the semi final. Doesn't take a genius to work out who they'd prefer to face.

Haiti qualify for the first time in 52 years.

A lot of people (myself included) have criticised the expansion of the world cup but i have to admit it's good to see a lot of these smaller nations qualifying and how much it means to their fans even if they are likely to not make it out of the group stages.

It means there will be plenty of games with big score lines if you like that sort of thing.

Great finish to the game at Hampden last night - really enjoyed it. I hope the draw is kind to Norn Iron, Ireland and Wales, it would be great to see at least one more from the British isles there, though a north v south derby in the Emerald Isle would be kind of intriguing...

But leaving that aside for a mo. CONMEBOL? What the F*** is that all about?

6 nations from the confederation qualify automatically, but just in case that's not enough, they get a bloody play off spot as well!

That's potentially 70% of the members - and if Suriname (who bizarrely play in CONCACAF) make it too, that'll be eight teams from a continent of twelve countries.

Is this a throwback from when Havelange was in charge of the whole shebang, or do they have pictures of Infanto he would rather nobody sees?

I think we should be told...

A few could sneak through in third too given one win could do it.

Are these play off games already scheduled to take place over an ‘international break’ ? We will be losing first team players for these matches

FIFA has proper International Windows in a Footballing Calendar now, so we wont ever have to deal with losing players at random times throughout the season like when we had Karim Bagheri many years ago - The Play-Offs will be in March, and because we're now a Championship side, no games will be scheduled.

Whilst no exact dates have been confirmed for the games yet, they'll happen from the 23rd - 31st March - Same dates as the Play-Offs for the UEFA Qualifiers that Wales / Ireland / Northern Ireland will be involved in, whilst I suspect that England will arrange a friendly with someone.

In the Charlton calendar we play the 21st March at home to Norwich, and then we don't play until the 3rd April against Bristol City.

Hope that doesn't f**k them over ahead of the Play-Offs then...!! - Why not do it AFTER they know if they're going to the World Cup or not.

Now Jamaica have to think about a new Manager as well as getting through the Play-Offs

To be fair I don't see the big deal with them losing out to Curacao, they're a small nation, but when you look at their squad, they pull a lot of players from the Eredivisie (thanks to a lot having Dutch heritage as well), and the Championship... So they seem well matched against Jamaica.

I think it's the expectation, it's an opportunity that won't come around as easy because of the auto qualified hosts, lot of criticism over his tactics and line ups recently. Will be interesting to see who they get in.

Looking at the tables, what on earth has happened to Costa Rica, that's a real drop off

Maximum points and no goals conceded is pretty impressive qualifying
Which is why I dont get all this hullabaloo over Ireland (both of them), Scotland & Wales. They are all celebrating like they've won the bloody thing but all they've done is get into the play offs.

I'll raise a toast if any of them actually quality for the WC.
Not sure if you’re too young to remember (or too old!), but England have wildly celebrated World Cup qualifying milestones in the past. Qualifying for the 1998 World Cup was a massive deal. There were plenty of tears, hugs and celebrations at the final whistle against Italy in ’97 when qualification was secured. And Beckham’s free kick against Greece in 2001 — the one that got us the point we needed for the 2002 World Cup — sparked huge celebrations as well.
Precisely......celebrating reaching the WC. As I said.....I'll toast our nearest neighbours once they get there..

    And PS.
They all hate England. They certainly wouldn't be going overboard if the situations were reversed.
So what?  How does that stop them celebrating their own success?

    This.

In ‘86, 15 year old me was only just starting to realise that the cheering on of the other home nations was definitely not reciprocated towards England.

    Spot on.

Can't believe the number of people on here (unless they've got Scottish heritage) saying how great it is they've qualified.

If the boot was on the other foot, do you think the Scots would be cheering on our qualification. Would they f***.

Only good thing to come out of this will be the chance to see them make fools of themselves again in the finals.

I used to like Ireland as a youngster, first world cup I can properly remember was '94 when we weren't there and it was all about them, then we had Kinsella, Deano, Holland..

didn't really realise / understand how much they hated us when I was younger though, hard to support them with that, although their goal was great to watch the other day and if Coventry is out there playing for them (and hasn't fucked off to Palace or something by then) then i'd cheer him and therefore them on

generally loathe scotland and don't like wales either (again the latter excepting the period when we had Robbo for them!)

half wanted jocks to win yesterday cos I'm intending to go out and got a scottish mate we all want to come on the trip... but then found myself wanting them to mess it up after they went 2-1 up and enjoyed the equaliser... will look forward to them humuliating themselves at the world cup, hopefully an embarrasing loss to curacao and a record trouncing by somebody

This is why I like it when they qualify cos of what happens to them in the actual tournament.
Remember when they celebrated a throw in against germany in the last euros and
then got knocked out by a last minute Hungary goal!! It’s great to watch 🤣

Now 17 countries qualified as Morocco won their African qualifying group on Friday with 2 of their 8 games still to play.
Up to 18 qualifiers today after Tunisia also win their group with 2 games in hand, although in their case they've played 8 of 10. No real shocks about the first two qualifiers from Africa, but with 9 to qualify this time there are some relatively unfamiliar names among the countries still in contention.
Egypt won their group yesterday, during the second-last round of games in Africa, making it 19 qualifiers to date.
Algeria made it 20 countries qualified today, guaranteeing topping their group with a game still to play.
Ghana sealed qualification yesterday - 21 teams now settled. Cape Verde need a win today against the last-placed team in their group to qualify for their first ever World Cup.
Congratulations to Cape Verde who have qualified for the first time ever, the 22nd country to make it to this tournament. They are the second smallest country by population ever to have qualified, only Iceland is smaller. The BBC tell me the team's nickname is "The Blue Sharks".
    23: South Africa
    24: Qatar
    25: England
    26: Saudi Arabia

2 more from Africa to be settled tonight.

England not only qualifying without conceding a goal and with 2 games still to play, they are the only UEFA country to qualify this early. Due to Portugal conceding a stoppage-time equaliser that prevented them also qualifying 2 games early. No laughing at the back, now...
    27: Ivory Coast
    28: Senegal

A bad night for those of us who were hoping for some more debutants. Gabon did qualify for the African playoffs, along with Dem. Congo, Nigeria and Cameroon. Only one country gets to go to the final playoffs, so that's a long shot.
France winning their group last night means they're the 29th country to qualify.

The remaining 10 direct qualifiers from Europe and 3 from North America will be confirmed during the rest of this international break, leaving only the 6 playoff slots to be sorted out. The playoffs will be 16 European countries competing for 4 places and 6 from the rest of the world chasing 2 slots. The current round of matches will also finalise who qualifies for those playoffs. Scotland and Wales are both guaranteed to be in the playoffs if they don't manage to win their groups (which Scotland might, but Wales would need a miracle). Northern Ireland also have a very good chance of a playoff slot. So it's been a pretty good qualification process for the 4 UK teams.

The African playoffs to determine who goes to the intercontinental playoffs (and will be a huge favourite to qualify) was narrowed down to Nigeria v DR Congo. Another of the possible first-time qualifiers, Gabon, were knocked out last night. Serious chance of Ademola Lookman getting to the World Cup despite Nigeria having under-performed so far.
Croatia's win over the Faroes means they are the 30th country to qualify and Czechia are guaranteed second in the group and a place in the playoffs. Which takes Czechia out of contention for the 4 slots in the playoffs reserved for the best Nations League performances among countries that don't finish top 2. Northern Ireland had been fifth on that list and are bumped up to fourth, so they are now guaranteed a playoff despite losing tonight.
Qualifiers will come thick and fast over the next couple of days with the remaining European groups, plus the Asian playoff on Tuesday and the last round of North America games in the early hours of Wednesday. For today:
    31 Portugal
    32 Norway

DR Congo will need to wait to see if they are seeded in the intercontinental playoff.
    33 Germany
    34 Netherlands

5 more UEFA qualifiers tomorrow, 3 North Americans Wednesday morning and then the two sets of playoffs next year which sort out the final 6 places. The draw for the playoffs is at noon on Thursday, the rankings I think come out some time on Wednesday, after the last of the CONCACAF qualifiers.
Qualifiers already listed by @Callumcafc but anyway:
    35 Belgium
    36 Austria
    37 Switzerland
    38 Spain
    39 Scotland
    40 Panama
    41 Haiti
    42 Curacao

The 42 direct qualifiers include 4 who have never qualified before (Uzbekistan, Jordan, Cape Verde, Curacao) plus arguably Qatar who didn't actually have to qualify for their only previous appearance. There's also Haiti and Panama both qualifying for only the second time ever.

The draw should be fun - there are some fairly strong teams lurking among the UEFA playoffs, so real potential for one or two good old-fashioned groups of death.
  • I’m English and proudly British. I always like to see the other Home Nations do well unless they are playing against us. TBF, they do seem to be mostly shit at team sports these days for some inexplicable reason, more so when they play us, and when they gather together in just their own separate nationalities despite having some pretty decent players to select from. A bit like we perennially were if we’re honest but now seem to have got our act together in a number of team sports. No wonder they ‘hate’ us 🤣

Only problem is that they're not actually a bad side now and there are going to be a lot of rubbish countries at this world cup, so they might actually get out of the group this time.
