RIP, A great drummer. I hadn't realised he was a decent artist too.

Oh no that is sad. Only retired in the last year from being in Jools Holland's Big Band to concentrate on his painting. For almost 50 years they played together.

Many decades ago I was sitting in my office in Sidcup and could hear someone drumming rather loudly. Thought nothing of it but then one Friday night I popped into the then supermarket in the High Street (now a gym) and standing in front of me was a chap wearing a distinctive black leather waistcoat but with nothing underneath. It was Gilson.

    RIP

Sad news, I saw him many times with the big band, last time I went he was looking a bit shaky and using a walking stick to get to the kit, having said that he still gave them a good thumping when he got there.

    RIP

Never heard of him but then opening this thread I find he was a drummer with Squeeze. The things you learn on here.

My favourite 'pop' drummer; superb player and a master of the 'fill'.
I saw him play with Jools Holland - just the two of them - at the Albany over 35 years ago, and after the show, asked him if I could have his drumsticks. 'Sorry, mate, they're the only pair I've got. I'm cabbin' now.'
However, some years later, I got a pair via Tilbrook.
    RIP Gilson, you'll be missed.

My mate was the manager at The Albany @1990.

  • Great drummer.

I noticed his absence from the last Hootenanny in the first few seconds, such was his partnership with Jools Holland.

I remember him replying to a question about Jools and nicking it wholesale for my 'colourful' best mate of 50 years.  "I've seen the best of him, I've seen the worst of him, there are no surprises".

    RIP Gilson.

Back in 1984, Gilson WAS the Jools Holland Big Band, all by himself.

Fabulous drummer, and lovely man.  Glad we got to say goodbye to him last year on his last Jools RAH appearance. RIP Gilson.
