Penalty takers
Probably ended up being Doc on Tuesday night because there was no Kelman on the pitch but I’m a little bemused why we didn’t opt for one of:
Leaburn, Carey, TC, Gillesphey, Bree, Coventry, even Hernandez instead.
Love Docherty but the last thing you’d say he’s known for is being able to get a clean strike on the ball. The only players I would’ve wanted to take it less are Kaminski, Ramsay or Jones.

Bree has scored 4 goals in his entire career...0

Solly had 3 for us yet he twated one into the top bins against Doncaster. For a penalty taker you want either someone who’s a good finisher, has technical ability, or hits the ball hard Docherty has none of those, he’s incredible off the ball but on the ball he’s not even top half L1 level, there’s minimum 6 players who should have took that pen before himsam3110 said:Bree has scored 4 goals in his entire career...8 -

As captain, no-one else stepped up to take it, so it was Docherty's responsibility, clearly none of the "strikers" on the pitch wanted to take it.
For someone who has "none of those" qualities, Docherty's scored quite a few long distance shots with power... Or does it only count if you're a full back who scores once every 4 years on average?0 -
Oh for a Yoni Buyens8

He’s also shown he can put a dead ball on a postage stamp.sam3110 said:Bree has scored 4 goals in his entire career...6 -
Philately will get you nowhere.3

Felt like the entire ground knew we were going to miss that penalty on Tuesday. I’m not sure why but the idea of Leaburn taking a penalty makes me even less confident!2

Should have been Macca7

And also directly out of play…Callumcafc said:

With Godden being out since the Play Off Final, sense tells you that there would have been a designated penalty taker in his absence.
A Mendonca, Hales, Bent type of striker would have been all over that. Leaburn should have been demanding that ball. Failing that someone who can put there foot through it and not telegraphing their run up.

Mark Reid, Bob Curtis, Tommy Caton. Defenders who could take penaltiesCrispywood said:

I'm sure we will be working this out for Saturday.1

Carey should’ve been given it and I was amazed he wasn’t9

But is an excellent set piece taker (ignoring that corner) and really strikes a dead ball.sam3110 said:Bree has scored 4 goals in his entire career...1 -
This must be the first time in the history of football that the player that took the penalty and fluffed it hasn’t been given any stick personally and everybody sees him almost as a hero and as someone who had to step up and take it and the blame for not scoring lays elsewhere. 😁😁😁2

Docherty was the designated penalty taker, decided before the game. If you’d offered it to Leaburn, Carey or TC I bet they would have been all over itsam3110 said:

I think our penalty conversion record in the league this season is absolutely atrocious - we've failed to score on every single occasion.7

I would have given to Gills, based on his free kicks or even Bree, someone with technical ability. It is a worry no strikers stepped up, i am 100% Kelman would have taken it if he was on.0

It wasn't great, but wasn't a dreadful penalty from Doc. People saying he fluffed it, is harsh. Im not saying I want him to stay as our penalty taker, but personally really don't think it was as bad take as most are saying. Keeper did his job and got right over to it.3

Reminded me of the Schwartz penalty against Oxford... Was placed perfectly for the Goalkeeper to save it, nice height and not far enough to the right for it to squeeze inside the post - Would have been fine had he not telegraphed it for Griffiths to dive the right way.
The best Strikers in the world have missed penalties. So not getting hung up on it too much, thankfully the penalty miss didn't cause any harm in the long run as we still won, and know he's not getting any stick, but Docherty impresses me as a Captain and seems to really enjoy it here, so imagine he was beating himself up about it as well2 -
The pen taker was suppose to be Carey, as you can see when Doc pointed to him .. but for some reason he did not want to take it ? Also why your two strikers not ripping the ball out of Doc hand to grab a goal especially Campbell who not scored yet …. Don’t think Doc who never taken a pen before had no option as captain to step up

Carey said after the game he'd be very happy to take penalties.
However Docherty was the chosen penalty taker, so correctly the other players let him take it. It's an awful look when you see players fighting over who takes a penalty.
Going forward, I really hope Carey takes the next one. He hits the ball with great power, but also on target. He's able to keep the ball down.5 -
Maybe they actually plan for who is taking penalties and after discounting those who have said they don’t fancy it, they went with the one who was best in training but it was just poorly executed on this occasion1
-
Would presume Doc was designated penalty taker if Godden or Kelman aren't on the pitch as he took one in pre season and scored it.
We don't get penalties that often so it will always look bad when you miss the one that comes around. Remember Taylor missed a couple in the first half of the 18/19 season to the point where I seem to remember Grant taking a couple instead of him. Also seem to remember Jacko not having a great record with them in the 12/13 season under Powell but because we kept getting them it didn't look too bad. Just got to hope Godden is on the pitch next time we get one0 -
Leaburn, like his dad has a 100% penalty success rate. Well done the Leaburns for their 2 successful penalties 😂se9addick said:Felt like the entire ground knew we were going to miss that penalty on Tuesday. I’m not sure why but the idea of Leaburn taking a penalty makes me even less confident!1 -
Genuinely ridiculous that Greg Docherty took that pen. That silly stutter run up and powder puff shot too made it even worse.1

Don’t you realise that he will have shown himself to be a very competent penalty taker……he wasn’t chosen on a whim.Callumcafc said:Probably ended up being Doc on Tuesday night because there was no Kelman on the pitch but I’m a little bemused why we didn’t opt for one of:

As to why some people seem to think it should automatically be a forward/striker that carries out the task is ridiculous, may I point out that many clubs elected penalty takers have been and will continue to be non strikers.
Strange that some should think otherwise.3
