POST-MATCH THREAD: Charlton Athletic vs West Bromwich Albion - Tuesday 4th November 2025 - 7:45pm
In the opening minutes Charlton found it hard to keep possession. Conversely, West Brom. had no such problems. They came forward a number of times, finding space easily. But Charlton contained them and limited the visitors to minor chances. Where they found themselves in on goal, they inevitably fluffed their lines.
On 34 minutes, a cross into the box found Miles Leaburn, who headed the ball into the centre of the box. The ball was handled in the area by a West Brom player and a penalty was awarded. Curiously, Captain Greg Docherty stepped up to take it. The strike was read well by the keeper who made a save to keep the game scoreless. Sonny Carey would have been my choice for penalty taker, as he has the finesse and, perhaps more importantly, the nerve to make it count.
The first half was a though watch. Conor Coventry had a positive effect on keeping the ball moving forward. I thought it was Onel Hernandez, though, who stood out in his wingback role on the left. Making his debut in the starting eleven, he was a bright spot in an otherwise forgettable half.
To start the second half, West Brom had their way with us down the right. On about 48 minutes, Thomas Kaminsky was called upon to make a save with his feet that kept us in it. West Brom should really have done better and, based on their lack of ability to finish, I can see why they’re struggling.
On 54 minutes, the ball fell to Sonny Carey who unleashed a shot from twenty yards or so that forced another remarkable save from the West Brom keeper. The resulting corner was a threat, but it was cleared and West Brom escaped again.
On 68 minutes, James Bree was tackled and it looked as though his left ankle gave way in dramatic fashion as he tried to evade the defender. He dropped to down in agony and it looked as though he was to be replaced. But he made it to his feet and continued.
On 73 minutes, Harvey Knibbs and Ibrahim Fullah came on to replace Greg Docherty and Onel Hernandez. Carey dropped back a bit and Knibbs and Fullah pushed on to support Leaburn up front. The game needed some new inspiration and young Fuller was handed his opportunity. Within mere moments of his introduction he provided just that with a pirouette on the ball and a probing pass forward to release Miles Leaburn. It didn’t come to much in the end, but the move helped to breathe new life into the final fifteen minutes of normal time. A couple more opportunities put the pressure on the visitors, but nothing came to much.
For the final ten minutes, Tanto Olaofe came on, replacing Miles Leaburn. Both sides then traded shots back and forth to run out regular time. There were five minutes of stoppage time added and the Addicks piled on the pressure effectively. Then, with about thirty seconds of time left the home side forced a corner. James Bree swung it in but it was easily cleared, but only into the path of Sonny Carey. He was closed down, but managed to evade his man, push the ball forward and unleash a now characteristically audacious twenty-five yard screamer through a crowd of people in the box. The ball took a small deflection and scooted underneath the West Brom keeper and into the back of the net to deliver all three points.
This side is resilient. The initial excitement of life in the Championship has seemingly ebbed away a bit, making the last few matches a tad more tedious. But this team seem capable, so far, of finding a way more often than not. And this kind of result, including a last minute goal that redeemed the earlier penalty miss, will help bring back some of the earlier season enthusiasm, both on and off the pitch. Hernandez and Fullah will be happy with their contributions and the Addicks will be happy to find a couple more sources of energy and new ideas for the long season ahead.
Who doesn’t like a last minute beauty! West Brom will be left scratching their heads as Charlton continue to collect points towards the journey upwards.

Last minute winners are one of life's greatest pleasures. Dont care how we win this season, the results are everything.

A win's a win! Weren't pretty but got the job done. Ginger genius at it again. He'll be knocking round again for the missus in a bit I'm sure.18

14 points clear of the drop zone is the most important thing!60

I've no idea if winning despite playing as badly as we have tonight is a sign that we're a force to be reckoned with at this level, or a sign that our good form isn't sustainable. But this season has already been much more fun than I feared it would be, and you can't knock our determination and resilience.
Get in!40 -

Watched the stream and shouted my block of flats down after the goal. Absolutely buzzing. 90+ is Charlton time. Jones played a blinder, yet again, and was mom for me again. Coventry and Carey good too, and Fullah was great. Oh COYR.14

Fullah deserves to be on the bench even without injuries to others. That was a class cameo!39

There is a customary shape sailing down the River, like a ghost it materialises out of the Mist as it appears on the Thames
It tries firing one shot, which rolls harmlessly into the Thames Barrier, we get a second shot and BOOM that's on target... Any idea why... Its because West Brom... YOU'VE... BEEN... SUNK... Oh and you might want to race back to Birmingham as Sonny Carey is after ye wives!!

A classic NJ gameplan and result. This was our 15th 1-0 win since the start of last season.9

How about a 95th minute winner? BoshEveshamAddick said:You can’t beat a last minute winner!3 -
Brilliant subs from Jones. Transformed the game. Sonny Carey our main threat most of the game. Really, Leaburn and Campbell were ineffective. Fullah made a big difference when he came on. The match was dire for 80 minutes and magic for the last 10. I’m smiling!13

So glad I'm going to Wrexham now.
This season playing in the championship is an absolute joy compared to league one.

Slight flashback to Watford, bemoaning a bad last minute corner only for us to score. Couldn’t believe my eyes.10

Brilliant!!
Dancing round the kitchen here in Melbourne.
The wife and baby think I'm a loony.
Fullah is going to take us to the promised land OR fund our push - he is MUSTARD.25 -
Shite but last 15 we were pushing. Finally we have a bit of luck. We ain’t going down so now we can actually push for a playoff. Couple players in Jan and we got half a chance.5

Campbell was pretty poor again, Fullah wasnt7

Wasnt the best performance, but thats probably the scariest thing about Charlton, not just today but over the course of the last few days.
Teams that end up getting promoted, they don't blast teams out of the water week in week out, instead they grind out results... Pick up points where they can, clean sheets, saving the need for attackers to constantly get us out of trouble... Like when we were endlessly drawing 2-2 at the likes of Morecambe etc.
Thats been Charlton this week, we've not been pretty since the Ipswich result, we possibly need a break, you could argue that both Swansea and West Brom have been a bit hard done by, but the reason we're in 5th, and they're not... Is we know how to grind out matches to earn ourselves the points - I still dont think we'll stick around the Play-Offs, because its a tight league, we'll probably end up about 3-5 points off the top six and end around midtable.
However keep grinding out these results, and the longer we're sniffing around, then its like Leicester in 2024/25 when they won the Premier League, and you have to realise that we're in and around the Play-Offs to stay, also helps that apart from Stoke (and Preston who play tomorrow), results pretty much went our way as well.
Both Lloyd Jones and Sonny Carey are running away with the top two in the POTY award, I just wouldnt like to be the one to say who'll win it.
Great Management as well from Nathan Jones today, game turned on its head when we made the first round of changes.
Onwards and Upwards we go.23
