That is a great result.
The commentator called it a smash and grab, and he ain’t wrong.2 -
FT! We are top of the table by 4 points5
-
Well, that was essentially a hate crime against football but we've won and we're now 4 points clear at the top. We must be the worst best team around at the moment but we keep nicking results and giving black eyes to teams who are clearly spending a lot more on wages than we are so long may it continue6
-
Still unbeaten and crazy that our two draws were against the teams sitting bottom and fourth from bottom2
-
Not quite sure how we've won that. Birmingham were better than us throughout, dominating possession and being much more capable and proactive with it than we were. But defensively we were as solid as we usually are (which given the absence of Kiera Skeels is no mean feat), Whitehouse was excellent - apart from her not being able to kick for toffee - and ultimately we took our chance and they didn't take any of theirs.
It's a slightly bizarre situation, because I think we'd agree this team is weaker (in attack at least) than last year, yet we're now 4 points clear at the top. We seem to be tailor-made for tough away games like this, when our opponents will dominate the ball but we'll hold out, and we struggle when playing lower-ranked teams at home when the onus is on us to break them down. We're obviously in a great position, but I'd need to see that we can dispatch the lesser teams before I'm confident that we can get promotion.2 -

Our defensive stats are a joke. We’ve conceded 2 goals so far. Next lowest is Birmingham with 8 and Durham with 9. If my maths is right (and that’s a big if) we’re on track to concede 6.2 goals across the whole season. Obviously that isn’t going to happen but to have played half the teams in the division, including 2 big spenders and the relegated WSL team and only have conceded 2 goals is wild5

As mad as it is I think Hills has got it about right given the budget. Other teams have smelled the possibility of WSL football and have made some big swings in the summer to try and get there. Newcastle brought in Nobbs, Mannion and Stokes, Bristol City brought in Sophie Ingle and Vicky Losada, Birmingham got Ji, it feels like pretty much every team taking it seriously went big on at least one very experienced WSL legend to try and get them over the line but we didn't. Even Saints took our POTY. In that situation you can't really go toe to toe with these big teams using the free transfers picked up from other WSL2 teams and lower so Hills has gone with what she knows, which is setting up an unbelievable tight defence. We have absolutely no ideas going forward but as long as Hutton or Newsham has a flash of inspiration or something weird happens like today we only need to get one goal to come away with the points. It surely can't be sustainable for a full season and we're lucky that so many of these teams are coming at us because we've been useless against the weaker teams who sit back. If we can keep this up until the new year though maybe we'll get a bit of investment to make sure of it. Thestrup may as well not be out there and a bit more pace and quality on the wings would make a huge difference and lift a little of the pressure off the backline.4
