Don't know if it's been mentioned already, but Richard from CAST has arranged for a few of us to have a meeting with South Eastern tomorrow. I've jotted down some notes already from what's been discussed but if anyone wants to add any thoughts to this then I'll add them to my list for tomorrow
From a selfish POV, more card readers and a couple of specials non-stop to London Bridge

Plus, if we ever get to engage with TfL and a public transport friendly Mayor; reinstate bus lanes and increase frequency on match days
in the unlikely event they do put a London bound special on, remind them that it should be at 17:15 for 3pm kick offs, and 21:50 for 19:45 kick offs.
last time they ran specials they left early about 17:00 for example and only one third full.

If anyone sees a slightly harassed lady with two young children trying to get the 17.10 train back towards London, please be kind and let her through! It would be my daughter with the next generation of Charlton supporters! That is her hourly service to the far north (Watford area)

Thought I’d share as I head back in a similar route although she probably already knows. Making the 17:10 after full time isn’t a guarantee as FT can be as late as 17:00 sometimes and there’s often a queue to get on the train.

If she does miss the 17:10 London bound trains all go to London Bridge and from London Bridge there are much more regular trains (than hourly) back to where she needs to go (although depending on her destination she may need to change at Farringdon - which is easy to get to from London Bridge)

Nothing that hasn't been said already, but installing more Oyster readers is such an easy improvement to make. The bottleneck, especially before the game, is getting out of Charlton station, with everyone waiting to use the 2 measly readers.
Maybe have an additional card reader specifically for phone users, they're the ones that seem to hold everyone up.

After reading all the above I think I’ll either walk to the Valley, get the 53 bus to Charlton village to avoid the roadworks or cycle but not get the train.
I find decisions like this tricky so probably won’t know until lunchtime.

Thanks, I think she might leave just before the end to make sure she catches it. Her daughter is only five but wants to follow her older brother!

Thanks all, I've added everything to my list of notes and I'm sure Richard's done the same too. While I don't think there will be much they can do about timetables, I'm hoping they'll be able to act on the feedback about the station. Especially with the card readers and the London bound queuing issues after games.

And why run all trains into Cannon Street rather than Charing Cross via Waterloo? The City is empty, most places closed, and the drain doesn't run at weekends. It puts 15/20 minutes on a journey with a forced change at LB.
That change happened as part of the massive London Bridge rebuild. To improve capacity, they didn't want trains from Greenwich crossing over the tracks outside London Bridge to reach the platforms to Charing Cross.
So since I started attending the Valley 50+ years ago, technology has advanced tenfold but service has regressed.

£1bn to rebuild LB station and they can't sort simple stuff like this? I'm not a railway engineer but how about points BEFORE the station to put the train on the right line for Waterloo? And I could run faster than a train from LB to WE.

    Bat tunnel crazy!
The trains are segregated before London Bridge. Then platforms and tracks for Waterloo East/Charing Cross, Blackfriars and Cannon Street.

A couple of ‘flexibly timed’ trains would be useful as the longer matches make predicting the time of the final whistle is difficult.  An example of inflexibility occurred after the last match.  Both the slow and fast trains were delayed, both reaching the Charlton junction from their different routes at the same time.  Flexibility would have let the fast train go first but ……

You can't isolate trains serving Charlton from the rest of the Southeastern Metro network. Some trains start from Cannon Street and  run through Charlton and then return via Eltham (and the other way round the loop). Others have to fit in the junctions near Dartford and Lewisham.

A few double decker trains would be nice. Maybe one day.

Think we should wait until the bridges/tunnels have been made higher.

Nice long, London-bound Thameslink train came in after the match - but left half empty while hundreds of people were still queuing outside for the one card reader.

More crucially and more difficulty you need wider trains so you can have steps and corridors. Need to rebuild every station on the network first!
