I really enjoyed listening to the original Charlton Chat, I thought it quite progressive at the time.chilham said:Countdown to Saturday November 1- Charlton Athletic v Swansea City, and 70 (seventy!) years to the day from my first Charlton game, v Manchester City- CAFC won 5-2 on Saturday November 5 1955. 'Many miles have I travelled, many games have I seen, following Charlton, my favourite team'- including trips to most major stadia in England plus lots of smaller grounds during the 3rd Division years, Also four winning play-off finals- v Leeds at Birmingham in 1987, plus three at Wembley (Sunderland twice and Leyton Orient last May). Another landmark with CAFC connection was the first radio chat show for one club, when Charlton Chat launched on RTM Radio (Thamesmead) in 1990, hosted by Steve Sutherland and driven by me for some two years every Sunday night. Why Charlton? My late father, Bob, was a Durham lad, invalided out of armed service in WW2 and in London (Mottingham) as a building repair worker. He met and married our mum, Gwen, me and brother Andrew came along, and dad found a football team to follow with Durham connections- Jimmy Seed and Sam Bartram. So it was off to The Valley that Saturday in 1955, which has been my 'second home' these past 70 years! COYR!
I also remember a regular advert that went, "Call me a taxi" my kids never tired (I did) of shouting out "You're a taxi".
Congrats on the platinum anniversary, and well done for the show.2 -

My father died suddenly in June this year aged 97. His last game was last seasons final match against Burton. A season ticket holder to the end. His first game was April 53 v Villa we won 5-1. Dad was a late starter aged 25 coming from up north having joined up and ending up in Woolwich where he settled after leaving the army. It could have been worse if he had returned home I could have ended up watching Norwich.
Dad had a great send off with a bag piper playing mull of kintyre leading the car into the crematorium with a Charlton flag covered coffin. His ashes now reside in the memorial gdn. RIP Dad.21 -
I'm fascinated by the most loyal and devoted Addicks, Seb of course & now Karen for her 800 consectitive matches. I wonder what the furthest back in time was first match for a current supporter who still comes to support the Addicks at the Valley.
My father's 1st game was Sept 1st, 1945 v Leicester 2-1 ! his last time at the Valley was 2019 so attended matches for 74 seasons & last time he saw Charlton play was at the 2019 play off victory at Wembley, quite a game to sign off on.
Do we have any fans who were there when we lifted the FA Cup in 1947 or saw Charlton in the war years & still attending matches?
Also is Karens 800 matches consectitive matches bettered by any other Addick(s)?

Clive R. Proper Charlton, and let us not forget a dyed in the wool Soul music fan from the 1960's, up there with the late, great Dave Godin.Clive featured in a fairly recent BBC programme, When Motown Came To Britain which featured both Clive and Dave.1

I think I changed computers and forgot the login! I am stiil heavily connected with Solar Radio- as Managing Director and still with a weekly show of vintage soul. 'Chilham' is a location thing :-)Covered End said:What happened to Solaraddick?1 -
Thanks for so many comments. My wife has contacted the club in the hope that this occadion may warrant a bit more than a line in the programme and a shout from BDL. Would be useful to know so I can sit in the most suitable place- would usually be in the press gantry to cover the game for Maritime Radio, but might be better in my Lower West season ticket seat!1

A certificate and photo for posterity on the pitch before the West Brom game on Tuesday night

The 6-6 was against Middlesbrough, Brian Clough played for Boro in that game.conleylad said:not trying to make this a contest but my father took me in 1953 I think it was Sam Batram' s500th game , it was against Portsmouth with whom we have always havea friendly relationship ( remember the sailor walking round the touch line ringinga bell , Pompey Chimes ) and there was a cake in the middle of the pitch before kick off in the shape ofa football pitch . Sam and pompey legend Jimmy Dickinson cut the cake . Since then i have supported the addicks through many ups and downs , funny the name the valiants never caught on . Highlights apart from the obvious play offs 7-6 against Huddersfield , 6 all draw against i cant remember who now and as a schoolboy seeing us beat luton away 6-1, Finally there was a book in the Guildhall library in London "the history of woolwich 1903 " In it I read that before Charlton attained league status they were playing local football and got through to a cup final, A local restauranteur promied the players a slap up meal if they won , they did but he reneged on the deal whereupon a local fish and chip shop stepped in . the following year Charlton god through to the final again and won and it was the headline in the local press "the Haddock boys do it again !" Greetings to all Charlton followers especially the older generation.0 -

There was also the year, in the era of Christmas Day/Boxing Day games, when we had Plymouth home and away and, as I recall, it was 6-4 to us at The Valley and ....6-4 to them at their place!.StrikerFirmani said:

Recalling also the Huddersfield 7-6 game- my first time 'on the pitch' at The Valley. Talking of on the pitch- I played 45 minutes in a charity game about 20 years ago, paid for the privilege, and Brian Kinsey was our team manager. Then more recently, pre lock-down, I was there to take a penalty when Sunderland were visitors and there was a commemoration of the Wembley Play off final "And Ilic has saved ir" that legendary shout by Mark Mansfield in commentary, I had the pleasure of working with Mark on RTM Radio when 'The Beautiful Game' replaced Charlton Chat. In those days Mark was working for ClubCall and RTM had an 'arrangement' to log in to the Clubcall commentary for Tuesday night away games!! I drove those shows in the RTM studio! Speaking of lock-down...with Maritime Radio accreditation, I had the privilege of attending all home games in the media gantry! I don't do many away games these days, so couldn't do 800 consecutive, but have probably done a few more than that in consecutive home games!1

Congratulations Chilham. Thanks for making me feel young again, my first game was either 1959 or 60 so 65 or 66years of pain and pleasure.0

Born in the old Woolwich mothers and babies hospital in 65. First Charlton game in 1970. Such great memories of that time being down the front on the fencing with my Dad, grandad and Uncle standing higher up on the East Terrace. So 55 years for me now. I have lived in Norwich for 37 years now. I love going to valley now as much as I did when I was a kid. Long old drive but take 10 year old grandson who is Charlton mad. Love our club and still feel my roots are firmly in SE7.2

Fabulous Chilham! Nearly as many as my Bruv 😜😜🤣🤣🤣0

Incredible Chilham, you've been a Charlton fan twice longer than I have been alive.
I do hope the club do something for you to mark the ocassion, who is best to make aware of this?0 -
Some way to go before I can compete with some on here. Nearly 62 years for me, my first game being 1-0 loss to Portsmouth on 29 February 1964. I saw two more games that season, a1-1 draw against Northampton ( A Mike Kenning penalty ) and a 2-0 loss in the last game of the season against the divisional champions Leeds. First victory I witnessed, was a 2-1 win against Man City in the opening game of the 1964/65 season. I still have the programmes from all those games.1

Something else very special also happened on November 5, 1955.
