Assessment of 25/26 Championship at 10 game stage

If you look at the results based on the opposition position

league table position on LHS this Mon am

4th Leicester H 0-1 Lost

6th Millwall H 1-1 Draw

7th Bristol City A 0-0 Draw

8th PNE A 2-0 Lost

11th QPR A 1-3 Lost

13th Watford H 1-0 Win

21st Derby A 1-1 Draw

22nd Blackburn H 3-0 Win

23rd Sheff Utd A 0-1 Win

24th Sheff Weds H 2-1 Win

So we've made a good start, but have played the current bottom 4 and the top 3 are coming up later so the challenge will be tougher to maintain the same level of results.

Given the chance of "undeserved" wins in a low scoring game like football we are yet to win one against the odds, with only draws the best results against the more successful clubs so far. Leicester/Millwall were the ones that got away.

Ipswich 12th/Hull 10th to come

  • If I was told we'd be in the top 10 after 10 games before the season started, I'd chuckle at the crazy talk. I feel we can beat any team at The Valley, so I'm cautiously optimistic. The only game we were totally outclassed, I feel, was against Preston.

So we have 15 points after 10 games. Wondering when was the last time someone had 15 or more points at the 10 game mark and went down from the Champ? Probably was us last time we were here.

Birmingham had 15 points in 23/24 and ended up getting relegated.

Reading had 18 points and Wigan had 16 points in 22/23 and both ended up getting relegated.
  • For all the difficulties of the Championship, we almost survived without Lyle Taylor for much of the season in 2019/20, we lost Conor Gallagher mid-season, had to rely on kids, a lot of whom dont play in the EFL anymore, and a transfer embargo... after all that we still only got relegated at the death

On that basis, I could see us finishing around midtable this year... We've barely been out played this season

Should probably have waited 24 hours before asserting that!

I'll be surprised if it doesnt happen a couple of times this season, what I dont expect is for it to happen on a regular basis at any point

Perhaps the reason the teams we’ve beaten are in the bottom half is because we beat them ?

This is exactly why you shouldn’t read too much into this. It’s no surprise the teams that got results against us are higher when we’ve only played 10 games, the points they got against us helped to make sure of that. For example, we beat Leicester and they would be 11th, we beat Millwall and they drop to 9th.

On the eve of the season I thought we’d be relegated. Now I think we’ll probably stay up, though our low goal scoring means our survival will be marginal.

That means we’re above my expectations.

the only problem we’ve had at the moment is the forward line. Considering there’s 9 other positions in the team, medical staff, manager + coaching team, ownership, fan base, league table, club atmosphere, academy, loans, etc the fact we only have the singular problem in about 20 possible aspects that contribute to the performance and future performance of us in the championship don’t think we could ask for more

And if we solve it - then the opportunity for this club to genuinely grow becomes significant.

I'll be pleased to see Godden back but I am not expecting him to be the messiah - I think next season we might spend some very real dough and identify a player that will suit NJs system and make a proper run for it.

I appreciate that we are being cautiously optimistic but I can't see us going down- Jones has this group working to their full capabilities and that is enough to keep us in the Championship.

That's only true about Watford. The two Sheffield clubs and Blackburn, along with Derby who we drew against, would still be in the bottom half had they beaten us and in or nearer the relegation zone than the top half had they done so.

That said, at this stage, some teams are in a false position. Sheffield United, for example, won't be relegated and Ipswich won't finish as low as 12th. We will have to wait for nearer the half way stage to make a true assessment of the situation but we have done, to date, as well as we might have expected.

Birmingham had 15 points in 23/24 and ended up getting relegated.

Reading had 18 points and Wigan had 16 points in 22/23 and both ended up getting relegated.
Birmingham were doing well and then sacked Eustace for Rooney after 11 games basically because they wanted a name. That was an absolute self-relegation and there's no way they would have gone down if they'd kept Eustace.

Reading got a 6 point deduction that season and Wigan got a 3 point deduction. Reading would have stayed up without theirs, Wigan would still have gone down but they had no investment and survived on loans and free transfers and never really stood a chance despite a decent start.

So basically, as long as we don't randomly sack our manager for some random inexperienced former England international or get a points deduction, statistically speaking we should be ok

We are holding our own (Oooooh Matron !)
    No easy games
No obviously outstanding team in the Champ
Our strikers are letting us down
Our defence and midfield have been superb
Enjoying the International breaks as they give the players time to recover from our lung bursting method of play

I still haven't been to a game as my F%$£&*^%ING knee is still bust and VERY painful!..
Other than that I'm enjoying watching televised games from all divisions

Come on youse Addicksaaaaaaahhh just make sure we are in this division for next season ..

We are above expectations, but equally back to back losses would see us right down the bottom end of the table.

We generally aren't finishing games as well as League 1. Our fitness levels aren't outstanding in this League like they were below, obviously.

I'd love it if the season ended now tbf and we had a chance to improve our squad, it's looking like we are an average championship side, which is all I hoped for this season.

Lose the next 2 it’s still 15 points from 12 gives us 58 points over the season which would have been 12th last year.

Aren’t finishing the games as well but we’ve had a poor last 30 at Derby QPR Preston and Wednesday but I’d say the Wednesday one we went to cruise control and never looked like conceding a 2nd. Only 3/10-4/10 games with a bad last 30 still suggests to me we have better fitness than most.

We’ve built an average championship squad so hopefully we can start targeting quality rather than quantity of players moving forward
