Ipswich Town vs Charlton Athletic
Tuesday 21st October 2025 - 7:45pm Kick-Off
Referee: Farai Hallam

Introduction
The games keep coming thick and fast this 2024/25 Championship season, no EFL Trophy (shudder!) to worry about, but constant International breaks causing a stop start league campaign means that there should naturally be more midweek fixtures the higher up the Divisions that you go. With another double header on the road, Charlton must first make the short(ish) trip to Suffolk. The Addicks make the journey fresh from another victory at the Valley, and will no doubt be looking to keep the early Play-Off chasing pack within their sight.

The Opposition
Name: Ipswich Town (12th) - Manager: Kieran McKenna
Ground: Portman Road
Previous League Result: Middlesbrough 2-1 Ipswich

Its been a difficult return to the Championship for an Ipswich Town side under Kieran McKenna... Two years they surprised everyone with back to back promotions from League One to the Premier League... Like Luton Town 12-months before, it perhaps came as no surprise when the Tractor Boys got relegated from the top flight. But understandably, given how they've impressed under McKenna, they were favourites to make an instant return to the top table.

Naturally its still early days, but Ipswich have struggled to really get going so far this campaign, the hangover from relegation still potentially hanging over Portman Road, after all we saw how that effected Luton Town - Yet even still, Ipswich might find themselves in midtable, however they've only lost the two games this season, a 1-0 loss away at Preston North End in August, and then a 2-1 defeat at high flying Middlesbrough on Friday night... Its winning games that are the biggest issue, they've drawn just as many that they've won. Although they did finally manage to defeat Norwich in the "Old Farm Derby" for the first time in 14-games... Congrats... We're sooo happy for you!!

In terms of the squad, and Ipswich have lost individuals; Omari Hutchinson a key figure in their last two seasons left for Nottingham Forest, whilst long serving Sam Morsy departed for Kuwait - Incomings have included the experienced Ashley Young, whilst Onel Hernandez will surely be delighted to be reunited with Marcelino Núñez, the first player to directly cross the East Anglia divide since 2001.

Charlton Team News
Nathan Jones admitted recently that his squad management could have been better during our last round of Saturday / Tuesday fixtures. As a result we may finally see a bit of squad rotation, which could well see Onel Hernandez coming into the team, if he does then its possibly he'll slot in at Left Wing-Back ahead of what would be a warm welcome from the home faithful at Portman Road.

On the other hand, you'd expect us to once again go with the settled forward line-up that includes; Tyreece Campbell, Charlie Kelman and Sonny Carey, the latter on the scoresheet once again on Saturday afternoon, and has now clear daylight as our top scorer in 2024/25 - All three individuals were predictably withdrawn with 20-minutes and 15-mins left on the clock, so as a result you'd expect them to once again start this Tuesday evening.

Elsewhere and Kayne Ramsay ahead of Reece Burke is another "obvious" option for Nathan Jones to opt for, whilst Joe Rankin-Costello made a rare appearance from the bench on Saturday, so could well come in for James Bree, but then again that would be the more surprising choice given the "habits" that we've seen from our Welsh Manager this season.

Kaminski
Ramsay - Jones - Gillesphey
Bree - Coventry - Docherty - Bell
Carey
Kelman - Campbell

Substitutes: Mannion - Burke - Costello - Apter - Berry - Knibbs - Hernandez - Leaburn - Olaofe

    Tough challenge coming up.
Unless we up our overall game by 10 or 15 percent I think we might lose even to an indifferent Ipswich, let alone an Ipswich on their own game.

Think Ramsay is the right call. Philogene is their danger man on the left so we will need Ramsay at his best

Ipswich have been very good at home, and have had an extra day to prepare. Expecting a defeat but not as heavy as the last 2 visits

Anderson for Berry on the bench, otherwise spot on. Take a point
  • Closest game of the season for me. Literally just a 20 minute drive down the road. Unfortunately since I've moved up here we've played at Portman Road twice, lost both times, with an aggregate score of 0-10.

Almost anything will be an improvement on that. Would take a draw right now, and be delighted about it.
  • Whoever drew up the fixtures doesn't like us.

4 away games out of 5 , including two lots of 2 in the same week, is just plain unfair.

Don't know whether we should rotate a little for this match or Saturdays visit to Hull but NJ really needs to do it sometime.

A point will be a miracle , realistically it’s a comfortable win for the tractor boys

Have we sold this out in the end?

Have been to Portman Road loads of times, but don't think I've been since 2008/09ish so am mildly excited for this but not feeling confident of a result. A chink of light is that Ipswich will dominate the ball and play and we tend to look better in this situations / on the counter.
  • For me its now tanto and Kelman time then I see us getting something there on Tuesday

Lots of chat around saying that this will be a mega test, sure Ipswich are ok, but so are we, and they will be left red faced when we drive back down the A12 with three points in our pockets, we have identical stats for the last 6 matches...0-2 will do nicely thank you...COYR

Can’t see us getting anything from this . At least Saturdays result gave us a bit of a cushion. I just don’t want us to get hammered.
    2-0 defeat

Mine came by post, quite a few days ago too, guess you should check with ticket office in the morning....

Unless we up our performance from the last two outings, we will be in for a thrashing. I think the NJ stardust has worn off now, just in time for a run of tough opponents. Tackling, blocking, harassing, and chasing 40% advantage passes is extremely tiring, and that is beginning to show in their performances now that we have two games a week. The teams we will meet over the next six games have better players, man for man, and that will begin to tell when our players can no longer give over and above against more skillful players playing proper football, not Jones's "kick and chase".

We have done brilliantly so far, but must now face the reckoning. I reckon our next chance of three points is at home to Portsmouth, Dec 6th, by when we will be close to, if not in, the bottom three.

With respect, we don’t get thrashed, even when we don’t play well. We might lose but won’t be easy for Ipswich, we could just as easily win.

QPR (3-1), Peterborough (3-0), Wrexham (3-0) could suggest otherwise. But it feels like thats down to the fact that Jones prefers to go for it, and see what happens, rather than just sit back and try to protect the Goal Difference.

Calling QPR a thrashing is a stretch, we were chasing the game at 2-1 down, the other two games were poor performances, so two games out  of the amount we’ve played since the poor Crawley game isn’t too bad I’d suggest. We’re a different side also since those two league 1 games. We don’t get thrashed.

Peterborough wasnt a poor performance either, we could have been 2-0 up ourselves before it went 1-0, and only ended up 3-0 because we kept pushing to try and get back into it... Hence why I used it as an example how Jones prefers to keep chasing for something, rather than protect the GD

Yes that was a day NJ got things wrong, the Peterborough forwards played probably their best games all season that day, especially the fella we let go. Feel like we’d settled for playoffs the day at Wrexham and they were so up for it, we were flat. But that’s history. Different league and squad now.

A reminder that while we and Ipswich are close together in the table, both us and Ipswich are much better at home than away. In the home table Ipswich are 3rd  whereas in the away table we are 19th.

This will be a tough game, I'd be delighted with a point. I really hope NJ considers both the next two away games when he picks his side, and rotates a bit more, as before the break we got a hard earned point midweek, but then put in a tired performance at Preston.

I wonder if a different formation might be needed on Tuesday, to give more legs and defensive cover in midfield, e.g. Knibbs, Costello or Anderson as an extra midfielder for one of the strikers?

There was I thinking we were away at Ipswich.
  • Fearing a drubbing, would love to do a smash and grab!

Our form in the last 6 league matches is identical to Ipswich and Hull, according to the BBC sport website.

Ipswich have had 4 penalties so far in league this season. Next highest is Birmingham with 2.

Something to look out for, as they clearly look to get penalties more than other sides.
