good luck to those wanting to see us in the final - $2000 for the cheapest seats

I applaud anybody who can afford to pay that sort of money.

Watching Norway giving Israel a good shoeing at the mo. 5-0 after 75 minutes. This is an Israel side that narrowly lost 4-5 to Italy by the way. Haaland’s scored an hattrick and missed a penalty.
They do actually look decent and aren’t just a one man team. Ødegaard isn’t even playing.
Also, as a side point, they’ve got this weird kind of runic script for their names and numbers on their shirts. Very Viking and quite striking. I like it. Nice shirt too (I forgive the red and blue because it’s based on the Norwegian flag 😉)

I still think Haaland is overated....
  • Can anyone explain what's going on with the Faroe Islands?
New manager and a new generation breaking through. We've been shit for a while after a decent period about 10-15 years ago. Looks much better now!

Big game for two of our home nations. Northern Ireland v Ze Germans and the Welsh v boring old Belgium. Both have to win I think. Certainly Wales.

Now 17 countries qualified as Morocco won their African qualifying group on Friday with 2 of their 8 games still to play.
Up to 18 qualifiers today after Tunisia also win their group with 2 games in hand, although in their case they've played 8 of 10. No real shocks about the first two qualifiers from Africa, but with 9 to qualify this time there are some relatively unfamiliar names among the countries still in contention.
Egypt won their group yesterday, during the second-last round of games in Africa, making it 19 qualifiers to date.
Algeria made it 20 countries qualified today, guaranteeing topping their group with a game still to play.
Ghana sealed qualification yesterday - 21 teams now settled. Cape Verde need a win today against the last-placed team in their group to qualify for their first ever World Cup.
Congratulations to Cape Verde who have qualified for the first time ever, the 22nd country to make it to this tournament. They are the second smallest country by population ever to have qualified, only Iceland is smaller. The BBC tell me the team's nickname is "The Blue Sharks".

The only good thing about the expansion of teams is seeing new countries there.
  • Would any of these debutants have qualified for a 32-team World Cup?

I think in Cape Verde's case, yes, as they won their group and only 4 African nations have amassed more points than them across all the qualification groups

Congrats to Cape Verde for overcoming the favourites in their group, Cameroon, a country who had been to 8 of the last 11 World Cups themselves.

Cameroon not out yet but they have a potential gruelling path through African and then intercontinental playoffs.

Magennis has been even worse than I expected.

Northern Ireland otherwise giving Germany a game.

Quite possibly. Jordan and Uzbekistan qualified by finishing second in their groups, so in 4th to 6th overall in Asian qualifying. Uzbekistan got more points than Australia. Last time there were 4 qualifiers from Asia plus a fifth via the playoffs, but since the hosts were Asian there were 6 countries actually there. And as others have pointed out Cape Verde beat Cameroon along the way.

When we get to the seventh and eighth qualifiers from Asia, which will be confirmed soon, that's the point where we're into teams who definitely wouldn't have qualified under the old rules. Plus New Zealand, of course; no way they'd have qualified.
  • The penalty Wales just conceded was one of the stupidest handballs I've ever seen.

What’s the story behind the N Ireland shirt, looks like audio waveforms in the design?

Magennis should of had a penalty. He was just thrown to the floor.

No idea!  So odd, just looked so deliberate and pointless.  And the ball was going away from goal.

    Brainless.

Tunisia qualified without conceding a goal, a feat which Ivory Coast can replicate if they don't concede in their game tonight.

In Europe, Switzerland, Spain and England have still yet to concede.

The remaining three African qualifiers will all be settled tonight, as will the two remaining Asian slots. We're also getting towards the point where European or North American countries might start winning groups with a game or two in hand.

Qatar vs United Arab Emirates, could be a fun watch, given whoever wins goes to the World Cup

Its on OneFootball (Free Streaming online) at 6pm

Same with Saudi Arabia vs. Iraq, but that clashes with Latvia vs. England @ 7:45pm

I do hope that with this extended draw, and debutants, that we get to see England against some new opposition, rather than just games against the same old sides we've faced in previous competitions.

Benin Vs Nigeria at 5pm, Benin currently top their group, 3 points ahead of Nigeria but only 2 ahead in GD, if Nigeria beat them they could spoil the party, however South Africa can also play spoilers as they play Rwanda and are 2 points behind Benin and 1 ahead of Nigeria.

Senegal top their group currently, but can be caught by DR Congo, both are at home, to Mauritania and Sudan respectively, so you'd expect Senegal to hold off Congo and qualify.

Ivory Coast and Gabon are fighting it out in the last group that's not decided, as mentioned before Ivory Coast are unbeaten and haven't conceded a goal, played 9, won 7 and drawn 2. Gabon could consider themselves unlucky, only 1 point behind Ivory Coast and on more points than 4 other group winners, even more if they win their last game against Burundi. Incidentally, Ivory Coast's 2 draws were played out between them and Gabon, and them and their opponents tonight, Kenya. I'm sure Gabon will be hoping Kenya can at least hold them to a draw again tonight, but will be confident if they have to go through the playoffs, having been so strong overall
