What have you learnt so far this season?

International break feels a good time to take stock. 20% of the season gone now and the initial change is starting to settle down.

What’s your thoughts on how the team is set up and performing?

What’s your thoughts on the standard of the Championship compared to your expectations?

Do you think we have enough to stay up?

What do you think is needed to be a play off challenger?

Any other thoughts? That sort of thing

We are doing better than I expected and more than holding our own

Loving the home games again with 20k+ in the Valley

Continue to consolidate this season and then review when we stay up next summer, fingers crossed the owners continue to back Nathan

I really missed the championship, it's a great league, full of proper clubs. It is brilliant to be back after far too many years in the dungeon that is league 1. The Valley is alive again and for the first time in a while, I look forward to attending. Recently it felt like a life chore.

I've been surprised at how easily we have stepped up. Other than Ipswich, Coventry and possibly Leicester, everyone seems pretty even. I'm hopeful that in a couple of years we can be vying for a play off place. Oh for a 15 goal a season striker.

I'm also genuinely excited about Fullah. I really hope we can get him some games later in the season.

I don't enjoy watching how we play. I enjoy the results, but it's frustrating watching limited attacking play fairly consistently. I would of course rather ugly football and stay in the league than pretty and relegated, but still, entertainment wise, none of our players excite me (consistently anyway)

Standard is lower than I expected, feel we have been promoted at the right time. There are no standout champion calibre team (except Coventry) and I think there's so many bad teams we are fortunate and have a chance to cement our championship status. Promotion from League 1 looks more difficult than staying up in this League.

I do and I don't. I feel a lot of sides sit in a false position, and will inevitably overtake us. All my eyes are on Oxford, Wednesday, Blackburn and Hull as the teams to finish above. Slightly concerned we didn't pick up points in games we should have, which could be all the difference by the end of the season, which we all know too well.

A complete squad overhaul. I would argue only 3 or 4 players look ready to be part of a play-off chasing side, Lloyd, Edwards, Bell and Ramsay before he went through the rough patch. Don't view Bree as our player. Need to see more of Carey, Coventry, Tanto and Apter, other players to tbf who I had high hopes of like Knibbs and Kelman.

To compete at the top we need a new centre back who can bring the ball out (similar to Matt Clarke at Derby) a new all action number 8, who can actually pass, a new 9 who can lead the line, and tbf, maybe even a new set of attackers in general the way things are going.

    Final thoughts;

I firmly believe we have the right manager, we are achieving beyond expectations currently, having the lowest valued squad in the league.

We desperately need to stay up and reasses our squad, I feel a fair bit of investment is going to be needed to push on, especially as I am expecting next season to be more difficult with the teams coming down.

We are doing what I'd hoped we would do in competing and levelling the field by using our strengths as opposed to trying to emulate 2008 Barcelona. And I love it, the desire, physicality  intensity we are playing with is great.

I'd hoped for that but as a born cynic I didn't expect it as a given.

By design we are low margin as opposed to defensive. So going behind is always going to make life difficult for us but we are also a 100 minute team and as long as we are keeping the margins skinny we always have a chance in games.

The standard of refereeing is appalling, I don't know of referees are just laser-focused on getting to the hallowed land of VAR or the game is so quick now or they have been guven confusing instructions (as opposed to "referee the game, let it flow, don't let them players take the piss") either way, the refereeing has been awful.

Defensively I think we are 90% there, the real premier-league bound players will find gaps but generally the players seem very sure of what they are doing, where they are meant to be.

Going forwards my frustrating little mate Tupac is doing, I think the best he can. Kelman I actually think is surprising me in how well he is adapting to an alien role, I really thought he was not the right signing for us but he is doing ok. Problem is, TC whilst being a grafter doesn't have the footballing brain to play that role. I think we look a lot more dangerous when the subs get made. I like TC but he really needs to get a payoff of winning a couple of penalties, a couple of assists or a goal. He is grafting though

Preston for me gave us the hardest game by doing what we normally do to other teams to us and thankfully a lot of sides in this league are playing in a way that we can compete with by pressing, being organised, having pace in defence as well as being aggressive when the ball is in the air.

I can see us having spells where we are talking about play-offs and spells where people are shitting the bed. I can see an 11th placed finish. Loads of fans are going to hate us and hate losing to us and I am more confident of away wins than I have been for years

it's been an excellent start. We are playing with the same tempo and aggression as per 2nd half of last season, with better quality players spread throughout the squad. The squad is well balanced.

We are hard to beat but recovering from a goal down to go on to get anything from the game is our achillies heel at the moment with our forwards not scoring yet, bar the 1 from Tanto. When we have to chase the game, we are open to conceding more.

I'm not overly impressed with the quality of the Champ so far, I expected more. I feel the better teams will find another gear at some point. We need to match that, and I believe what NJ states, we will evolve over the season.

We are looking fitter than most teams we've faced.

The level of officiating is absolutely shite, I thought it would improve at this level, with the champ getting more Prem refs, but it seems to be the same as L1 and worse.

NJ is a proper Charlton manager. We're greater than the sum of our parts.

The stadium is looking great, the owners have invested in all areas of the club and infrastructure.

We will stay up comfortably, If we want top 6 and playoffs, we need to spend big in the midfield and the forward areas.

We are on the up! UTA!

    More than pleased so far.
Our goal threat is a concern though. I by no means blame the strikers for this. We're playing pretty much the same system as last season but with much less give in opposition defences. We create very little
We're not at the level for consistent sneaky 1-0s yet. The likelihood of going a goal down is much higher in this league than the last. And our reactions to them haven't been the greatest so far. Something will need to change if we're not going to have an uncomfortable end to the season.
But I'm confident enough in Jones to say he will find a way.

Mid-table is a genuine possibility, not a fantasy.
Play-offs, or better, is probably more fantasy.
We've already lived-up to our League Cup expectations, not expecting anything better in the FA Cup.

    Crowds are on the up

Clean sheets following on from last season

Team working well and not out of place in this division

However a lack of goals especially from our strikers is something that will need to be addressed as the season continues. The return of Godden will be a help in that

This season the Championship is going to be brutal. I can see the gap between 6th top and 3rd bottom being tiny. SIX teams all on 12 points, with 3 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses  :D

While I expect Wednesday and Oxford to go down, the 3rd position could be one of 10 teams. Similarly I can see the playoff places being a mad scramble right until the end.

I expect us to continue as we are. Not scoring many goals, not conceding many either. As long as we can keep clean sheets, we'll grind out enough 1-0s to keep us away from the drop zone.

Said from the start of the season we would keep enough clean sheets to keep us up and my opinion on that hasn't changed. Think the biggest thing we're still learning is the difference in individual quality. Players can look poor and suddenly make a moment out of nothing. Biggest example of this was the Leicester game with their goal and the save from Conor Coventry. Will be a very tight league which means we've got to show consistency and avoid a winless run. Whilst we've been performing better than I thought we would, I would definitely still snap your hand off for a 21st placed finish and staying in the league.

The difference in goalkeeping ability is also ridiculously big compared to League One. Mentioned the Leicester keeper above but there's been some top saves in the Watford, Bristol City and Sheffield United games as well where we'd probably have another 5 goals against League One keepers

Not really worried about a relegation scrap based on what I’ve seen so far. If anything, I’m slightly disappointed we’re not higher up the table. With a bit more luck (and sharper finishing), we could easily have beaten Leicester, Millwall, and Bristol.

The only games we didn’t really deserve anything from were the losses to QPR and Preston — and even in those, we looked solid in spells. Overall, feeling pretty positive about the season so far.

We just need more retro shirts in the club shop!

I've learnt that we need to play wing-backs who are wing-backs, not Kayne Ramsay, who isn't a wing-back, which is largely where NJ has screwed up in the last 1.5 games

Would’ve taken mid table after 9 games all day long.

Second full season with Nathan Jones as manager. It’s clear to see that he likes to build solid foundations before doing anything more ambitious post Christmas. It happened last season and I’m expecting it to happen again this season.

As long as we’re not bottom three by the time May comes around, we’ll have achieved something we haven’t done in 11 years since the 14/15 season.

I've learned that the modern football fan sees their role as criticising no matter what. If you're in L1 it's not good enough. If you get promoted then the players aren't good enough. If you have a decent transfer window and sign good players then the spend isn't enough compared to everyone else. You say in the summer that finishing 21st would be a great result but once the season starts every unsuccessful game is a disaster. Being midtable after 9 games isn't good enough, there's still anger and head shaking. The football isn't fun to watch, the wins come too late, the other teams are better than us (even when they lose to us), the sky is perpetually falling and only the fans can see it. I do wonder a bit if anyone actually enjoys supporting the football team anymore. I was hoping the positivity would last a bit longer after promotion, especially given the decent start, but some of you really need to chill. We're in the Championship! We get to play Leicester and Watford instead of Stockport and Mansfield! Cheer up a bit!
Last time we were in the Championship at this stage we had won 5, drawn 2 and lost 2, were sitting on 17 points instead of 12, had scored 12 goals and conceded 8, compared to our current 8/8, just beating eventual Champions, Leeds United at home, and I think we were even in the play-offs?

We of course ended that season in relegation.

Personally, I want to see Charlton be a stable Championship club for many years and never see League 1 again, being like Barsnley, Wigan, Rotherham etc long term won't cut it for me.

Not saying we will go down again, it's just pointing out that technically we were a better team at this stage last time yet we still went down.

I don't go to games negative, cheer on the team the whole game more or less, want us to win, and enjoy every goal, this is however, a forum to discuss Charlton and share thoughts.

Personally find it far more grating when people do these types of posts when everyone is going to have different views on how we are fairing. Completely exaggerated and I doubt anyone on here actually is going to games angry and shaking their heads over the results.

Suppose these types of hysterical posts of anti-negativity lap up the likes though on here so it is motivation for people.

TLDR; it's perfectly ok to enjoy Charlton as a fan, be happy at the games, but also hold pessimistic views and be a bit cautious. 👍🏻
  • For me I am just so happy and relieved to be back in the championship. With each year passing, us being a League one club was becoming the norm. And with each failed manager and league campaign more owners would come and lose money and then interest. Through sheer grit and determination we fought our way up last year, the play off final was a sliding doors moment in my view. Lose and off go our best players (Leaburn, Tupac, Jones, Ramsay, Coventry) and the rebuild begins. Jones goes to Cardiff, we get a newbie and the cycle re-starts.......win and we keep the players, become a sexy London club with vast potential, get bigger crowds, do up the stadium, turn our media teams into MTV style comms and be one step from the promised land. The Netflix drama must be coming!

I would be happy with 21st this season. Home form is everything. I think we will lose 15 games overall at least, so supporting them through high and low is crucial. Our pressing style may well be found out a bit as the season goes on, so a plan B is crucial. I do think we'r emissing a proper leader. A talisman, who will step up when things go badly. Yes we have a strong spine, but a Kinsella type player who commands respect and you can see is leading on the pitch.

Players wise i'm still jury out. There is potential there but being frank most of them are still top league 1 players, and the step up is a big one. Jones i think is there, aside form his head rush moments as a centreback. Coventry is, well, Coventry and dependable and adaptable. Edwards/Ramsay have had their moments but also been shaky too. So fingers crossed. Weirdly i do see huge talent in Kelman, cliche but I think 1 goal and he will go on a run.

Our manager has a culture and it works for the club. Hard work, fight for every ball, press and be aggressive. Is it good to watch, not for me, but this season is about results and staying up.

Football goes in cycles for alot of clubs bar the top 6 or 7 in the Prem. Your time in the sun comes and you last it out as long as you can. My gut tells me if we stay up this year, our turn is coming round again and this time may it last longer than 7 years.

Not really a new thing but this season has cemented how lucky we are to have Jones. Our wins and performances aren’t built on sand, there’s realistic hope that we play like this consistently and continue to pick up the results we need. Is it pretty? No. Are we scoring enough? Probably not. But none of our wins or draws have felt like we’ve robbed the opposition and that Blackburn game was brilliant. We were always going to lose more games this season, we need to readjust as a fanbase and enjoy the wins when we get them

Nathan Jones said before the season started that we would be competitive this season.
    So far we have been.
Although the championship is a big step up from league one it's not as good as I expected.
Beat the Wendies next match and we will be top half after 10 games and I certainly never thought that would be the case.
Nathan Jones is just about as good a manager as we could hope for especially after the last few we have had.
If we can keep free of too many injuries I'm fairly confident we will finish somewhere between 12th and 16th and would be a great finish for our 1st season back in this league.

Whereas last year we were easily the fittest team in the league, this season we're not, as shown by the tiredness we've shown in the Derby and Preston games recently.

Doesn't mean we're unfit, and I reckon we still track in the top third of the league overall, fitness wise, but goes to show the jump in the Championship.

We don't have enough players that have moments of brilliance to win games. Carey has shown it a bit, as has Bree, Knibbs popping up at Watford, but a lot more clubs in this league have several players that regularly make the difference.

Pace isn't the be all and end all, thankfully, because we still lack it across the board.

You get way less keepers having stinkers.

You need to shop outside of the UK for value, and I hope to see us start doing this soon

Due to some personal stuff going on, last season pretty much passed me by and I was hardly aware of results or how we were playing in the main. Even promotion barely registered tbh. With that in mind, now I’m getting back into Charlton the positivity and sense that we are really starting to build something and holding our own in this division is such a complete sea change for me. If we hold on to Jones and maintain the stability we currently enjoy, the next couple of seasons could be something special. I’d love to think we could be in and around the top six even this year but realistically it’s unlikely and maybe in the long term not as beneficial as improving at a more gradual pace. I suppose what I’m trying to get over is that I honestly believe after the showing we’ve made (so far) is that we can really find a way back to the top table and deservedly so.

We of course ended that season in relegation.
But not much later that season we had a fairly horrific injury crisis that meant we were calling youth team players back from loan in non-league to not just bolster the squad but play in games, not to mention all the upheaval caused by the Nimer/Southall shenanigans and Covid. We are in a much better position as a club this time, even if injuries and suspensions aren't something that we can really account for.
Personally, I'm finding the football better this season - much less head tennis and midfield ping pong than in League One, and while the general dearth of goals from the strikers is a bit of a concern, the defenders and midfielders are chipping in, and scoring some bloody good goals. I've no idea where we going to end up, but I'm enjoying the ride.

Last time round, we had a creative player way better than anyone we have now, in Gallagher. His excellence papered over the thinness of the squad for a while. Then injuries took their toll, and he was recalled, but even then we only just failed to stay up.

This season we have much more depth, but lack creativity. And it's a fair comment to note that so far the biggest signings Kelman and Knibbs have both struggled to make an impact. Kelman doesn't seem to suit our style of play, while after that debut goal Knibbs has been anonymous, and looked a bit unfit.

This year's Championship looks fairly average, but there are teams like Leicester who aren't actually that good BUT have players capable of individual brilliance way above what we have. Fatawu is too good for this level.

That no matter who the manager is and who the players are we can't seem to beat Millwall.
