Top ten finish?

I think it speaks volumes that we bounced back from 2 defeats without any real drama or fear,  it highlights the work NJs and has team has installed that we did not lose any momentum after 2 defeats.

It didn't even cross my mind that we might go on a poor run, due to the calibre of performances.

I think we are seeing something genuinely special emerging here - The players we have are very much in the grafter mold with a sprinkle of flair and rock solid, well drilled, patterns of play.

We have a manager with a point to prove at the very least to himself.

A squad that are bonded and all fighting for starting berths.

The Valley is rocking!

Who do we have to fear in this league? Coventry? Boro? Anyone else?

I think we can finish top 10 - what do you reckon?

Good word SE9, respect not fear well done.

Sod respecting other teams, just analyse their form, their players and their manager and then neutralise their gameplan and go on to beat them
  • 7 games in I think it may be a little premature to think where we will finish. But thus far we have performed mostly well. Scoring goals wins matches but conceding them will defiantly lose them, so a good defence is where I would put my efforts in this league. So far we have looked really solid at the back with our keeper not having to make many  interventions. We should have got something from the Leicester game and the Millwall one was a nailed on win until the 82nd minute, who knows how Sky would describe us now, probably not struggling sitting in second place.
  • We have a massive test upcoming with 4 of our next 5 games being away (Derby, Preston, Ipswich and Hull).
Our sole home game in October is against Sheff Wed.
If we're still in the top half of the table at the end of October then anything is possible.
  • If we stay up I’ll be happy with this season. Obviously I want more but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

And I’m on holiday for it :(

  • A lot of teams have been very inconsistent in the championship so far. What has been most impressive about us is that we have been the opposite, across our 7 games the performance levels have been pretty consistent across all of them, even the losses.  Which to me says we can probably keep these levels up
  • I think our structure and competition for places and our late game management are rock solid -

None of those fixtures scare me - not even Ipswich

1 win and 2 draws and a loss would do us well - then a win at home to Sheff Wed

I have not felt this for years - I think we are genuinely a club on the up.
  • Agree that we're looking unlikely for relegation, but it's far too early to be thinking we're top ten material over a full season. It's a long season in a league we're still learning about.

Our league position at end of next month will be very interesting.

Ipswich and Preston both unbeaten at home this season (each with 8 points from 4 games) and Hull have 2/3 wins at home.

They're the tougher games on form, with Derby away and Wednesday at home the more likely 3 pointers for us.

This, fans are slowly getting on board...
  • Way too early to call it!
  • Promoted by Easter

I remember post like this after a good stat last time we were in the championship and how did that end?

obviously we are a lot better run now in comparison, we have an experienced manager, unlikely that players will strike etc but we should still be aiming for 16 at this stage. Reasses every 10 games and see where we are

if we do, I will be very happy

I have been joking with an afc Wimbledon supporting friend that the footballing authorities should promote us both, to give us more of a challenge
  • Far to early for me, remember our last season in the Championship.
  • Burnley last season kept 30 clean sheets and didn't concede more than a single goal in any game. 30 of the 69 goals they scored all season came in just 7 of their games meaning that they averaged exactly a goal a game in the other 39 matches. Yet they ended up with 100 points and were only denied being champions as a result of Leeds scoring an injury time winner at Plymouth in the final game of the season.

With the players at our disposal, our strength in having two first choice players across the back five, short of a run of injuries, there is no reason whatsoever why we shouldn't finish in the top 10 if not higher. Let's also not forget how lucky Leicester were to beat us and how, but for Ramsay's dismissal, we probably would have beaten Millwall.

  • We've only played one of the properly big teams in this league and we lost. Long way to go, lots of huge tests. We look good though

The nature of this league means should fear every one.

For example the other week Bristol City were unbeaten and going along nicely in third and were playing Oxford who were second bottom and hadn't won a game. Result 3-1 to Oxford.
On the flip side we’ve shown everyone should fear us too. We won’t be rolling over for anyone.
  • Far too early to say. I wouldn’t discount it from what we have seen so far but can we do it on a cold dark Tuesday night in Derby ?
  • Off the back of the second half on Saturday, if we play like that, of course it could be possible, but I’m cognizant that up until the second half on sat we’ve looked liked we huffed and puffed in front of goal.

i think we have a good squad, so can manage injuries. The challenge will be the competition in this league.  It’s very strong.  I’d bite your hand off at 21st still

That's the thing though - I'm not sure who those teams are? Leicester enjoyed a real "smash and grab" with that wonder goal and we've played the sides that are currently 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th, 16th, 20th (Blackburn who were winning that game in hand against Ipswich before it was abandoned) and 24th (Sheffield United who will be a different team from the one that started the season).

Top 10 in such an open division is certainly attainable. If we want to dream of better then let's reflect on what Sunderland achieved last season - 76 points and some 24 points behind the runners up, Burnley. They are now sitting in fifth place in the PL.

If you can't dream when things are going well, when can you?
  • Last time we were in the Championship we were 8th in the league after 10 games, 4 points off first. We didn't lose until 14th September and we'd beaten Brentford and Leeds. Then the injuries hit hard and we ended up relegated. I think we have a much deeper squad than then. We aren't reliant on loan players, we have genuine quality behind the first 11 that is creating selection headaches, Deji Oshilaja isn't there, all in all it's not an identical situation but imagine if we lose Jones, Bell, Edwards and Coventry to injury tomorrow. Things will suddenly look a little bit shakier so I'm not starting to think about any kind of finish we might be capable of until March because we've all seen how quickly it can turn in this league.

What’s great about the championship is that it’s so close and tight that if you can put a run of wins together you’re in with a shout of the play offs. Equally lose a few on the trot and you’re staring at relegation. Long may the good vibes and good results continue!
  • Too many people getting carried away for my liking. Let's just concentrate on picking up points. Every one is valuable. Don't fear anyone, but there again there are no easy games in this division.

Get to 50 points as soon as possible, then look further up the ladder. Priority is staying in this Division for next season and building from there.

A good start so far and whilst this time around we are better equipped, 6 years ago showed points on the board early doors means nothing if you cannot back it up until the last kick of the campaign.

Give me 21st next May, and I’m more than happy with that
Championship play off final is 23 May 😉

Spot on. In the Conor Gallagher season we had 4 wins and 2 draws from our first 6 games..............then only won 3 more games in 5 months.

I don't think that's likely to happen again but it's definitely a reminder to not get too carried away.
