200 years of the railways

Those of us travelling to The Valley by train today might like to know that it was 200 years ago this very day that the first railway journey was made between Stockton and Darlington. Perhaps when (hopefully) celebrating a win this evening we should raise a glass to the genius of George Stephenson.

And it was delayed by 20 minutes, a tradition that all on the railways work tirelessly to maintain to this very day.

The London and Greenwich Railway (L&GR) was opened in London between 1836 and 1838. It was the first steam railway in the capital, the first to be built specifically for passengers, and the first entirely elevated railway.

    That really is very cool.

I’m surprised that there’s nothing about it on their homepage:

I think I read somewhere that the London to Greenwich stretch was built with one million bricks.
And there used to be a footpath next to the lines that people could walk for a penny.

Piss off Norwood Junction was built in 1564 specifically so palarse supporters could go & watch the first game of football ever. Shithurst park looks like it was built at around the same time

You can stick the trains and public transport.
Did the 5.05 from Charlton to Lewisham go or did they cancel that train?
