Greenwich LTN made permanent as pledges made to fix Charlton’s traffic

  • Well there's a surprise.

    Said no-one.

This bit made me laugh in frustration:

council officers admitted in their report to Anthony Okereke, the council leader, that it “may have contributed to localised increased traffic pressures on some specific roads within the Charlton area.

May have contributed?! It 100% contributed to the traffic pressures in Charlton.

And as they said all it's done is push it further East, guess what they'll do then? Probably bring in a new zone there, pushing it East again.

Currently it pushes it to Victoria Way, which has a narrow bridge over the railway, forcing traffic into single lane, one way at a time crossing, making queues much longer. If they zone that, it'll push the traffic to Charlton Church Lane

    Done.
  • The current set up is easy to get around leave car @ 2.30-40pm in a bay with 2hrs free parking and you'll be fine. Quite simply its impossible for wardens to photo cars and get back @ 4.40- 5pm to check if you have exceeded 2hrs free parking. (Your allowed 10mins grace) You won't see a warden hanging around post match with thousands of fans coming out of the ground. Even better for evening games as you can park from 4.40pm onwards for free.

It’s put me off coming to The Valley, to be honest. I missed the kick off for the Leicester game (something I never do) because I ended up parking in St John’s Park Road near Blackheath and walking from there. Is there anywhere closer to park (paid or unpaid)?

Me too Thai. I’ve stopped attending because of this - I never thought that the scummy council would bring an end to my days of attending games 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

I don’t know about Greenwich wardens, but in other councils their wardens ride around on mopeds - as I found out to my cost a few years ago 💰🤬

well have been parking in 2hr zone parking bays for several years - I park up in one bay so can enjoy pre match and move it to another road and bay just before KO and never had a prob, get into ground and in my seat by 2.45pm sure one day may get a ticket but highly unlikely - only seen a warden once before KO. The wardens scotter, foot, magic carpert etc they simply can't patrol all bays between 2.30-3pm and get back around 2+hrs later to check, your allowed 10 mins grace to. Plus no way wardens are sticking fines on cars around 4.45-5pm with thousands of fans coming out
  • Never once had a problem parking, sure there are days that are busier than some and I park a little further down the road but always get a spot without any restrictions so no worrying about tickets.

How on earth did Charlton get those huge crowds before the ubiquity of cars?
There are good public transport options to get people to the Valley as well as Shanks pony and cycling and taxis.

What’s the logic for not needing the restrictions after 5pm?

I know it’s to our advantage but can you trust the council not to nibble away at that in the future?

According to the borough website the hours for restrictions are 9am -6.30 pm Monday to Saturday.

TOOTING RED ARMY: yes its 2hr window free between these hrs so just get a bay around 2.30-2.45 close to the ground and your fine, no warden is going to slap a ticket in few minutes you go over 2hrs plus you get 10mins grace on parking tickets so no problem - never seen a warden after a match in surrounding roads
evening matches are better just park anytime after 4.30 and then its free.

    Good idea.
Me, my son and grandson will all get our bikes out and cycle up from Southampton.
I'm sure a taxi would be a reasonable price.
Or we could get the train paying £40 plus each.
    Thanks for your suggestion.

If everyone who came by car, did what you did, the vast majority would miss a big chunk of the game, as they would need to park in the first available spot which would not leave enough time to get back to the ground in time for kick off

The row behind me always arrive around 10 mins after KO & leave before the end.

There’s plenty of free on road parking where I live in Plumstead. Bus or train from Plumstead to the Valley is good.
Look further afield for parking and you’ll be fine.

Three Greenwich Council car parks are set to be sold at auction next month – with the town hall hoping to net a total of £1.4 million from the sale.

The car parks at Old Dover Road in Blackheath, Charlton Village and Plumstead High Street are being offloaded as part of a £33 million package of cuts approved by the Labour council’s cabinet in October last year.

With so little parking in the Borough, I could see some 'enterprising' developers buying up these sites and turning them into car parks.

    They'd make a fortune.
