I believe he has scored about thirty goals in the Championship for Coventry. He is more than capable of scoring in this division with the right service. I am not convinced with Kelman but it is early days. We are a bit powderpuff at the moment.
32 goals, over 4 seasons. So he can score at this level but he's hardly prolific, 12 was his best ever season. There's more to his game than goals of course but goals are specifically what we're lacking and he's unlikely to be the solution to that specific issue.
12 goals for a team looking to just stay up, maybe push towards midtable if possible is a great return. We're not a team who are going to be relying on a 20 goal striker like we were when we were expecting to push for promotion in L1. 6 goals from him and the rest of our strikers, maybe 10-12 from one in a good season is pretty much what Curbs relied on before we brought Bent in. Godden tends to go on little runs of goalscoring and once he's back if he can do that in a clump then we'll pick up enough wins to be safe. It's the same with Kelman, Leaburn, TC and Olaofe, if two of them get 5 or 6 each and the others 3 then that will match roughly what you're expecting from a newly promoted team trying to survive. We need to get the strikers scoring but even then we're in the Championship, it's going to be low scoring from each player as it always has been for a team in our position
I am actually in agreement, I think my other posts came across more critical of Godden specifically than intended.

What I was trying to say was actually something very similar to this - Godden coming back will absolutely benefit the team and he absolutely is a good player. But he's not s good that him being back/in the team is enough on its own. If/when he does come back and scores 5-10 goals this season, the other strikers will STILL have to start being more efficient as well.

Godden will probably help with the lack of goals, but won't solve that issue on his own.
We need lots of people to chip in. But from our squad we are missing 1 of the 3 players that scored the most goals last season in Godden. And the other 2, Kelman and Knibbs, haven’t been fully up to speed because they signed later on. They should both be getting there now

Oxford’s top scorer last season scored 6 goals. We don’t need someone to bang in 15-20 goals in order to stay up (though it would be great if someone did), we just need a lot of people chipping in, like we had last season with 18 different goal scorers
An uninteresting stat here….4 of those came in the first 4 games of the season.
If we’re on uninteresting stats (😉), not one player in the Championship reached 20 league goals last season.

Godden, or any of our strikers, hitting 12-15 would go a very long way to seeing us have a very decent season, particularly with a solid defence.
  • isnt Knibbs supposed to be a quality CM?
We might find out if he ever gets a game
  • isnt Knibbs supposed to be a quality CM?
I think he's more of a goalscoring attacking midfielder/second striker.

Hard to pass judgement on him as he's played so little, but in the Cambridge game he didn't show any obvious signs that he was a creative passer.

A quality Jones CM, but that’s not the same as being a classy playmaking CM many would like to see.
  • if any of our players this season reach double figures it'll be a cracking achievement

You're looking at a list of bare statistics - which never tell the context.

There's no account of spells of longer term injuries, or regularly coming off the bench to impact games; key involvements in goals - or even perhaps, a struggling winless run by his injury-hit team, or because there are other younger quality players now keeping him out of their side.

The key point other posters are making is his all-round nous and experience is as valuable to our team as his goals scored.

  • If Godden is out for a few weeks, that brings us into September.
He's then got to get match fit.
I reckon he won't feature until October if we're lucky.
I don't think anyone agreed with me.

I think if he’s scoring his first goal by December, he’s doing well.

Attacking midfielder rather than a natural 8 like Docherty, however there’s no way Carey is getting dropped anytime soon
  • Carey has been one of our outstanding performers I’d say.

Anyway Matty comes back soon. It will be a huge boost to the squad!
