Alfie May could have had the same op and still be fit for Saturday6

Apparently Bolton are back in for him, come from Alan Nixon thoughblackpool72 said:

We play 4 league games and Stevenage before the international break and then there's 2 weeks off before Millwall on 13 September. Hopefully he can be back for that.Bedsaddick said:Will be out for a a few games . How many a few is , is anyone’s guess but I suspect at least a month .3 -
If Godden is out for a few weeks, that brings us into September.
He's then got to get match fit.
I reckon he won't feature until October if we're lucky.1 -
We need him back and involved ASAP3
-
We certainly do, and in the meantime maybe need to adjust our forward play whilst he's not in the team... We're too used to having Campbell playing wide, with Godden operating as the lone man in the middle... We're almost trying to get Kelman and Leaburn to play the Godden role, whereas we need to possibly adjust to play those two in THEIR best roles.Callumcafc said:We need him back and involved ASAP
Is Campbell also suffering because he's trying to play his normal way, but we don't have Godden in the middle so they cant predict each others movement, like what we saw worked well last season.2 -

Really not sure Godden will make much of a difference at this level.4

Sadly agree. He's never been prolific in the Champ. He scored 8 and 6 in his last two seasons, and he's also now 34 years old.carly burn said:Really not sure Godden will make much of a difference at this level.
It's natural that we look to the injured players when we're in a tough spell, but I don't think he's going to be the answer this season.1 -

Cawley said NJ mentioned on Thursday that Godden was “back on the grass”, but made the point that doesn’t mean he’s back in full training. So late September makes sense.4

That not the problem is getting the ball to our striker that’s the problem better service , better final ball to feet or into the channels like we saw Kelman on Saturday when he was brought down or Godden and Kelman will struggle ..Callumcafc said:We need him back and involved ASAP

Striker only has good as the service they get .. he could be 40 but if he was getting 5 chances a game he would still score 2carly burn said:Really not sure Godden will make much of a difference at this level.2 -
There were opportunities against Leicester, if godden was on the pitch he'd have taken them.... 34 years old of not.2

I heard that after his operation it would be a minimum of six weeks before he is back in full training. So a few weeks to go yet.1

The sooner Matt Godden is back the better Charlton will have its Mojo back. Yes, we were brilliant yesterday considering where we were this time last year. But with all the opportunities and possession in front of goal, you cannot help but think that godden would be by a long shot the best option in front of goal right now. That is not to say that other strikers won’t become much better; a bit like Macaulay Gillespie became very good last season as the team progressed, but it just seems frustrating that we lack something in front of goal that Godden displayed very easily in the second half of last season albeit in league one. The reason we are not winning while being the better team is simply due to the fact that we are not taking chances.3

But we're not creating chances, that's more of an issue. Our xG yesterday of 0.64 reflects that.bromleyjohn said:The sooner Matt Godden is back the better Charlton will have its Mojo back. Godden would be better, as he might be able to create half chances through his play, and win free kicks with his nous, but it's not as our other attackers are missing sitters.8 -
There nothing Godden would have done any different to Kelman yesterday … Kelman wa excellent his movement both with or without the ball was very good … and had a few good runs where he created for othersbromleyjohn said:The sooner Matt Godden is back the better Charlton will have its Mojo back. Back running on grass but not yet training with the first team I heard7

The older you get, the longer recovery will usually take. He'll be desperate to get back, but he isn't the silver bullet.
I don't think him coming back suddenly means we will get a bagfuls of extra goals - we're not creating that many chances. Having not had the same pre-season, it's not like he's going to hit the ground running and play multiple 90s. The main game he would have made the difference was the Leicester game.
Realistically, it's going to be a while until we see a fit and ready Godden.5 -
Not forgetting Dean Chandler (easy to do so, although I think he scored a nice header against Reading on the telly).RodneyCharltonTrotta said:

He'd win a few headers at the very least.RonnieMoore said:

If Matty can get to the type of form he demonstrated last season, he'll be an asset. As well as his overall experience and nous, he's surprisingly good in the air and also at holding the ball up and bringing others into play.
Kelman was significantly better yesterday and is hopefully now fully fit.

Godden is definitely benefitting from the adage that everyone looks better when they aren't playing - not that he's not a good player and maybe we would be a point or two better off but I'm not convinced he's the elixir that some people seem to believe.
All of our strikers have to different degrees struggled to make the step up (so far), I really don't think that Godden would somehow be the exception - he's only ever had one really decent season in the Championship and that was three or 4 years ago with more mileage/injuries since then.2 -
Apart from Leaburn hitting the woodwork, can you remember another chance we have supplied to any striker. The formation we play makes us hard to score against, but rarely makes for attacking free flowing football.thenewbie said:Godden is definitely benefitting from the adage that everyone looks better when they aren't playing - not that he's not a good player and maybe we would be a point or two better off but I'm not convinced he's the elixir that some people seem to believe.

We definitely need better delivery from corners and free kicks. Hopefully Bree can supply some of that.1 -
Chances this season over 0.2 xG that didn’t result in a goal:CaptainRobbo said:
