  • I do wonder what the cost of Billings contract is and the value of that to us. He has to be, relatively speaking, one of the highest paid, if not the highest paid, player and next season he might only play a maximum of 12 games for the Club.

His record in the Blast this season is:

    14 innings, 188 runs @  average of 18.80 and S/R of 135.25

    Finch, by comparison:

    9 innings, 252 runs @ average of 31.50 and S/R of 147.36

So, wouldn't we be better re-directing some of the Billings' money saved to secure a top overseas player for the tournament?
    My thoughts exactly, AA.
  • Yeah but he is a great captain…

Crawley not allowed to play but Rizvi and Cohen make the squad for the first time this summer
  • "Zak Crawley has not been released by England to play in this match, after featuring in the T20 Quarter Final and playing in The Hundred this August."

= the ECB see no reason for Crawley to play any more red ball matches prior to the Ashes and he would prefer to be playing golf anyway.
  • Maybe Zak will feature in another of the red ball games. It's not as if Kent are fighting for anything now, it might be better to see how Dawkins gets on in the CC anyway.

No DBD,  Joe Denly or Leaning in the squad is interesting
  • Jack Leaning is finished, bloke looks like he’s forgotten how to hold a bat. Do wonder if he has personal issues ongoing but the decline he has shown this year is staggering

DBD and Stewart aren't fit enough to play a 4-day game yet. I suspect that Denly will be offered, at best, a white ball only contract and Leaning's last 4 scores in red ball in the 2s, since he was dropped, have been 23, 52, 27 & 9.
  • Cohen and Rizvi make their first class debuts. Finch won the toss and we're batting

Quinn, Cohen and Rizvi are, presumably, being given an opportunity to demonstrate why they should be given another contract. Of the two omitted, namely Benjamin and Garrett, only the latter's contract runs out this season.

  • Jaydn caught behind driving at a ball for 8 (15)

    14-1 (5.5)
  • 50-1 (17)

    Compton 16* (47)
    Dawkins 16* (44)
  • 119-1.
  • 122-1 (29) at lunch and an undefeated partnership of 108

    Compton 49* (88)
    Dawkins 49* (78)
  • Let's hope this partnership continues to put decent runs on the board.

But can't complain about the start they've made.
  • The Club have gone about things exactly the right way. They gave the one or two of the "old guard" an opportunity to prove themselves but once that didn't happen and with us performing so poorly in the CC, it was obvious that we needed to give experience to youngsters who might be in the first team next season.
  • 50 for Dawkins
  • Great to see Dawkins continue his excellent form, and against the red ball.

It's becoming difficult to leave him out.
  • 50 for Compton too
  • Dawkins clips one off his legs straight to midwicket for 60 (94)

    150-2 (34)

    Compton 60* (103)
