Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the loan signing of James Bree from Southampton.
The 27-year-old defender, who joins on a deal until January, made 17 Premier League appearances for the Saints last season and brings a wealth of Championship experience to the Addicks’ ranks.
Manager Nathan Jones is thrilled to make Bree his 10th summer signing. He said: "I’m really pleased we’ve been able to bring in James. It’s a position we’ve been trying to fill for a long time. I signed him at Luton and he did wonderfully, and I bought him at Southampton to play in the Premier League. He’s someone I have real faith in.
"It’s a real coup to get a player of his quality, athleticism and pedigree. The signing of James finishes off a wonderful window where we have added real quality to the squad."
Bree added: "I’m absolutely delighted to get it over the line. It all happened really quickly in the last couple of days once I spoke to the gaffer. I’ve obviously worked with him before and he really got the best out of me. I’m looking forward to playing in front of all of the fans."

Remember his free kick for Luton a few seasons ago against Hull. Hoping he can take corners as well...0

He's a right sided defender.AddicksAddict said:Is he fit? Whose position does he take? Apter’s?
He's been injured pre-season and not kicked a ball yet.
He fails the CL height test
Whelmed, as AFKA famously once said

Good Championship experience, should be strong competition for Apter and seems he can cover CB and LB if needed.0
-
He's also out of contract at the end of this season

Why only til Jan?0

Might be getting Fukuda in January, or we might be worried about his fitness, and dont want to commit until January - Either that or Southampton might want him back in January, and sell him with a few months left on his deal for a pittance.IR94 said:Why only til Jan?6 -
Blimey, if he likes you, you cannot shake off NJ can you?

I wonder if it’s so late because he was the championship player who was having an issue with hair transplants? That’s definitely more than he had when he signed for Southampton.Callumcafc said:

Well done again Friedman, Brener and Co. 👏
The money you have spent on players this summer hasn’t been seen for many years .
You have certainly done more than your bit to give the Championship a real crack.40 -
Been to Turkey i see

I will admit to not being an expert on formations what does this signing mean in terms of our starting lineup? Surely Apter stays but where ?0
-
Good news he’s ex Luton bad news he didn’t experience the back to back relegations0
-
He goes into the squad and fights for his place in the starting XI like everybody else.AddicksAddict said:Is he fit? Whose position does he take? Apter’s?5 -
That’s an excellent signing for a lot of reasons
January loan so we have to pay something to get him permanently or another club coughs up after he’s played a blinder for us.
Whatever way, he improves us. COYRs2 -
A good window, despite the knee-jerk panic in the last 48 hours.1
