Reece Burke is back in training but the summer addition from Luton Town has not featured since the opening game in pre-season at Dartford.
“He is involved now, in terms of everything, but I didn’t want to risk him tonight playing 90 minutes or a load of minutes because, again, if anything happens then we are exposed,” said Jones.
Really not sure what this means?
It means NJ was concerned he’d break down and not be available for the weekend and so one of tonight’s players would need to come on in the Championship. That in itself is a massive issue
But either he’s fit to play at least some minutes in an EFL cup match or he is still too crocked to risk on the bench in a league match? I was trying not to directly call out NJ for talking in riddles. Agree we have a big issue - seemingly of our own making.

My reading is he's fit enough for either but both have a risk to them, Jones would rather take the risk in the league than the cup

You can't get much more exposed than playing Mitchell alongside Laqeretabua and bringing on Gough.
If he's back in full training surely he could've at least been a sub and got 15-20 minutes at the end?
Ridiculous that we paid a fee for him, can't understand why we did it when there were so many other options.
We’ve got difficult challenge of needing alternatives to our two best players in Ramsay and Jones.
How do you sell the club to players who in reality will hopefully only be back up?
If you want players as good as Ramsay and Jones you need to pay the wages and fees those players cost. I doubt Jones wants a young defender from the lower leagues as they’ll have the same need of regular game time in order to develop.
Burke not being able to play every game was perhaps a way to handle that.
I do wonder if Jones had been encouraged or challenged to use our young defenders as cover and last night was his way of showing none of them are ready yet.
If you play a young defender it should be alongside experienced players, it gives them a much better chance of stepping up and learning along the way.
Going to be interesting to see who if anyone we bring in. I expect there will be some doubts about their fitness or ability because we’re not going to pay big money for a Ramsay or Jones clone to sit on the bench.

I have no issue with us buying someone better than Jones, but that won’t be easy in our budget and he’s a very good player . That’s the reality of improving a squad . Not the same level but that’s what we’ve done with Gillesphey . Buying better than Ramsay will be taxing . Personally , I think we will have to evolve our system this year and I’d be looking for a right back that can play both wing back and centre half well. Apter is too good a footballer to leave out - he will find a place somewhere . I think we will end up playing 3421, with a more orthodox but attacking right wing back , with Apter and Knibbs off the striker . We have to have more threat than just crosses from wide players .

The question for me is how much did we pay for him. For example paying 150k given the increased budget might be worth the risk. If we paid 900k, then it might be wasteful. Not sure if the fee has been reported anywhere.
I will say that given the number of signings that have been made, we've still had a very decent success rate and even if Burke does turn out to be something of a busted flush I'd still say we have done pretty well.
They can't all be winners and at the very least it seems like we've still got time to rectify the issue of lack of cover at CB.

It was the one fee there wasn’t even a rumoured amount somewhere.

Agreed. Either he's fit enough to play, or he isn't ready.
And after so little pre season, he can't be anywhere near match fit anyway. It would be crazy to throw him in to a Championship game straight away, whereas last night would surely have been a useful way of easing him back.

How much Luton contract was there remaining?
Maybe the fee was taking on his contract for the season if he had a year left say? Then giving him another year on top. I cant remember how long he signed for though.

He signed a "long term" deal in 2023, so either a year or two as a guess. Doesn't look like Luton said how long the contract was for.
