Apparently the M11 is closed near Cambridge due to an accident.
Hopefully things will clear in a few hours, but the A10 is often used as a diversion route in such circumstances, so those travelling may want to look at that option.
The M11 is closed at the moment between junctions 11 (Cambridge South) and junction12 (A603 to central cambridge. 2 alternatives: 1) come off M11 at junction 9 and head to Newmarket and then double back on A14 into Cambridge; or 2) come up the A10 to Royston, then take the A1198 from Royston to the A603 (about 4miles north of Royston past Bassingbourn Barracks) and enter Cambridge from the west. Do not use A 10 past Royston since this will take you onto junction 11 of M11..
Hopefully accident which closed both sides of motorway will be cleared before 6.00pm
OK. It seems like the accident occurred between Jn 11 and J12 ... this is the part of the M11 which runs around the West side of Cambridge. The Abbey Stadium is to the North East of the city.
"The M11 is closed in both directions, with severe delays due to emergency repairs. Congestion is backing up to junction 10 (Duxford), and also diverting down the A10 to Harston and north into Cambridge. There are northbound queues at Trumpington, and there is heavy traffic via the Fen Causeway."
Coming in from the South (via the A10) will be problematic as that takes you to Trumpington etc. I'd imagine the city centre will be bad too. It's never great.
I live about 45 minutes away and planned to leave around 5pm. I'll be leaving earlier and taking the back roads. It might be worth thinking about the A11 and then the A1307 if you are less familiar with the area.

I don't think coming in from the West will work (your Option 2). That will take you to the M11 Jn 12 roundabout and I can't see that being clear. You also then have to come into Cambridge via the Barton Road and that meets the Fen Causeway (see above).
Unless things are cleared by early- to mid-afternoon, I'd suggest that coming in from the East is the only real option. Your Option 1 is good. That's my A11 suggestion.
Drove up early this morning as working in Cambridge for 3 days. Absolute nightmare. Only needed to get to the SE side of the city so was coming up A11 way but most people were 45-60mins late. Planning to leave to check in at hotel at 1630. Bets on it ending up as a 1945 KO?
