Yes but that was the banter era. The Appleton period they were actually trying to make the club good. He was just shite.ElfsborgAddick said:AndyG said:We have had some tough times and some rubbish managers but for me nothing comes close to him. I had to stop watching his post match stuff as it was obvious he didn’t give a shit
Karel Fraeye made Appleton look like Jurgen Klopp.
I'm not sure whether you're joking, but the appointments were both the same in trying to get on the cheap. Regardless of ownership at the time.

Great news he came out of this the other side.

It wasn’t even his ineptitude that made me mad Elf’s it was his obvious total lack of interest he didn’t even try to pretend he cared that takes some front.ElfsborgAddick said:AndyG said:We have had some tough times and some rubbish managers but for me nothing comes close to him. Fraeye was a joke, but I will always remember Appleton's tenure far more negatively, maybe because we were in our lowest placing in the club history, genuinely looked like relegation candidates to the fourth division, and he couldn't give 2 fucks.

Under Appleton we did at least vaguely play some okay attacking football now and then. Slade was the non-Fraeye nadir0

True. We scored 6 against a pub team after the pub team drew at the valley!!!!Leuth said:Under Appleton we did at least vaguely play some okay attacking football now and then. Slade was the non-Fraeye nadir0 -
No I think they (Scott & co.) genuinely looked at Appleton’s time at both Oxford and Lincoln and thought he was the right choice.ElfsborgAddick said:cantersaddick said:

I'm not sure whether you're joking, but the appointments were both the same in trying to get on the cheap. Regardless of ownership at the time.He is proving at his third club back to back now that those days are long gone. Maybe the game has moved on, maybe his heart isn’t in it like it used to be.
Whatever it is, I can’t see him getting another job in the EFL after this.0 -

I think Fraeye can feel less bad than Appleton because we pretty much expected to get relegated eventually under Roland's clownshow and the minute Fraeye came in it was guaranteed. I don't think many of us were expecting to be looking down the barrel of a relegation to L2 though even with Appleton in charge.IR94 said:Fraeye was a joke, but I will always remember Appleton's tenure far more negatively, maybe because we were in our lowest placing in the club history, genuinely looked like relegation candidates to the fourth division, and he couldn't give 2 fucks.2 -

Whatever it is, I can’t see him getting another job in the EFL after this.If Holden can get a job under Gerrard(good luck to him btw), then Appleton is capable of getting another job. It's all about a decent agent.0 -
Wasn't Appleton coaching at Man United when we appointed him or something? Or had been?0
-
Think he ended up there after being sacked by us, as their Loan Manager or somethingMarcusH26 said:Wasn't Appleton coaching at Man United when we appointed him or something? Or had been?

I suspect that his dismal time at Charlton lost him credibility with the Shrewsbury players, which made his job even harder. After all there were in the same division as us, so could see our progression under Jones, and how hated Appleton had been.Callumcafc said:

Can't agree with the first bit, also thought Dean Holden was a very bad manager, just a nicer blokeguinnessaddick said:

Worst in recent years must be, in some sort of order (Worst first) -
Fraeye
Slade
Adkins
Appleton
Also, weren't we really bad under Les Reed? Even though he went on to do well elsewhere0 -
Reed has only been manager here as far as I know, and was utterly dreadful at it. All his success has come from more supervisory/backstage type roles, which to be fair he genuinely does seem to be good at.Gribbo said:Worst in recent years must be, in some sort of order (Worst first) -

I think you have to look at the context of when they took over.Gribbo said:Worst in recent years must be, in some sort of order (Worst first) -

Slade took over at a time when we were completely all at sea. There were no pre season plans and we did not have many players.Slade may have not exactly brought about entertaining football, but he set us on the right path to professionalism again which meant Robinson had something to work with.He was definitely a superior appointment than Appleton in my despairing look at previous calamities.2 -
Neither of them could coach out of possession. That’s why Jackson was the best of the young/unproven managers we had, he at least could organise a team out of possessionBraziliance said:

I think Garner’s the one that was unlucky, we started that season well. If he’d actually been backed by Sandgaard then I think he’d have had a chance. Would definitely not have kept us up in the championship though, thank god we ended up with Jones1 -

I have a slight suspicion of " pure football " managers like Garner and Russell Martin, and whether it works if your players are average for that division.
Garner had a very good Swindon team in L2, but has failed since then and is now back in academy football, where I think he is better suited.5 -
In Appleton's first 4 home games we scored 13 goals. Then we went to Wigan and absolutely obliterated them for 80 minutes. Then with 10 minutes left of that game something fatally shifted and we became terrible, but in 4.9 games we'd actually looked pretty goodCAFCDAZ said:

I have always thought he must do a great job interview!0

All well and good playing to Pep's style when you have the squads of Barca, Bayern and City to pick from. Look at the dross we had under Garner.killerandflash said:I have a slight suspicion of " pure football " managers like Garner and Russell Martin, and whether it works if your players are average for that division.

Which shows what a deluded fool Garner and is ilk are, your job is to win matches, not impress with a philosophyCaptainRobbo said:
