Foreign boss who'd never managed in the UK. Knew nothing about us or the English leagues. Took the job like a duck to water & kept us up.
Chris Powell would have kept us up that season too. Bob Peeters was slightly unlucky to be sacked, I thought. Jacko did well with a poor squad, although the football wasn’t great to watch . Tight between Fraeye, Appleton and Slade for the worst. I think Dean Holden gets too good a press from fans just because he is a nice guy .
We've had a few well liked managers since Curbs (most have really been coaches really as their management role has been mostly restricted by finance or Belgian madness) but the best real manager is our current fruit loop.
What’s bext? Could be who’s our best striker since 2000, excluding anyone who played in the PL and anyone who scored double figures in a single season across all competitions.
Parkinson and it’s not even close. Put his own money into signing players (was it jacko he paid for himself?) comes across as a lovely guy and made us competitive in league one with just free transfers and loans and could’ve taken us to Wembley (and maybe up) if it wasn’t for a Bailey meteor.
Riga did a great job and quickly realised the job he had, how popular who he was coming in after was and the players duchatelet had brought in weren’t good enough. It very easily could have completely fallen apart but he kept it all together, won the respect from fans and most importantly kept us up.
I love threads like this. My 4th best manager would also be Parkinson. It is worth looking at Charlton's squad that year we finished 4th. As the above post said, it was an army of free transfers and loans. Southampton, Norwich and Leeds had a squads full of players that would go on to play in the Premier League.
I shudder to think about how we would have faired in the Championship had we actually won those playoffs (we probably would have lost to Millwall at Wembley anyway).
Slightly amazed people are saying Jackson. I know we all love him but he took over in October and we finished in our lowest ever position up to that point. He started well but then there was a a point from February where we got 1 point from 8 games and he absolutely refused to change anything about the set-up. He looks like he's much better now with more experience but once he got figured out for us it was game over. Even the Garner/Holden axis finished 10th.
Depressingly it's probably between Peeters and Riga given that they were managing in the Championship. We started boringly but ok under Peeters and then things went a bit downhill but I don't think he would have relegated us. He was liable to piss all the players off though so who knows. Riga kept us up the first time but with a Powell team that had a bit of togetherness that made them better than they should have been. When he came back he actually got given some decent players - Fanni, Motta, Yun, Teixeira - but did a pretty crap job of it. We ended up going down by 9 points and there were some real debacles like Reading at home and Wednesday away. The worst was the 0-0s against MK Dons and Bolton where we just showed zero urgency to force a result against the two worst teams in the league. God, I think it might be Peeters. That's depressing
As an actual manager it's Parky by a mile though. Jackson might one day overtake him but if you look at all our other managers in the post-Curbs period they've all dropped back into obscurity after managing us. Peeters managed some rubbish Dutch teams and is now a Sporting Director, Luzon manages the Israel u21s, Riga is unemployed after last managing an Algerian team as far as I can tell, Slade was sacked by Hereford 5 years ago, Bowyer got sacked as Montserrat manager. The list goes on but Parkinson actually kicked on after us. He got to a League Cup final with Bradford and got them promoted to L1 and then into the L1 playoffs, got Bolton promoted to the Championship and initially kept them up in insane circumstances, just missed on on the playoffs with Sunderland in the Covid season and then has had a great run with Wrexham. The problem is he was so crap for us in the Championship it's unbelievable. Yes the team wasn't great but he won, what, 4 of 23 games? Took 11 games to get his first win and finished bottom. Impossibly bad.
Too many back room issues to give a definite answer but perversely Iain Dowie for proving that Football and Rocket science don't mix other than a team will 'crash and burn' if there are weak components.
Iain Dowie for creating the word Bouncebackabillity which CAFC finally found after years of stagnation but most praise goes to the present owners who have backed a manager in Nathan Jones who has been allowed to be a manager and not just a head coach with little say in transfers.
Johnnie Jackson overachieved with the team he had at cafc and he stated that if you have wing backs: one should be a defender with the skill to get forward and one should be an attacker with the skill to help out the defence. He didn't have that as CBT couldn't defend but the principle was correct.
Despite the criticism of JJ by some I said he would be successful if given time and backed. Keeping Wimbledon up this season with a low budget will be a great success in League 1. 445 apps many as Captain taught Jackson so much in his playing career.
Without decent players for the level you're at, teams struggle. Obvious statement but many fans can't see that.
What’s bext? Could be who’s our best striker since 2000, excluding anyone who played in the PL and anyone who scored double figures in a single season across all competitions.
We can all speculate on the best manager but a big part of how well a manager does is how he is backed by the board. Jones has instilled a level of enthusiasm in me for Charlton that I haven’t felt for a long long time but he is being backed brilliantly in a way that Powell, Bowyer, & J.J. never was so to judge how good a manager was in their own period of time is a difficult one to call. All things being equal I do think though that Jones has made us bloody difficult to beat & at the end of the day regardless of how we do it, you just want to see a win. It’s great to play like Brazil but at the end of the day history will just show the result . I can’t tell you how we played against Leicester when Shaun Bartlett scored his goal but I sure remember how he scored it ! I can’t remember turning up to a game expecting a favourable result as much as I do at the moment so Jones for me is ticking a lot of boxes much as I loved Powell & J.J.
Bowyer not so much but I respected the job he did under difficult circumstances.
It's so bad. What really horrified me was looking through the jobs that our former managers now have. Not one was an up and coming manager who maybe came to us a bit early but otherwise had potential with the possible future exception of Jackson. Most of them are now either unemployed, not managing teams anymore or managing at a pathetic level. Parkinson is the only other one managing at Championship level and I do suspect that that won't last for too much longer. Even Bowyer's management career has collapsed. I honestly think it's a wonder Amnesty International hasn't stepped in at any point
Slade was the most disappointing manager, certainly since the relegation from the PL.
After picking unknown network and European managers (and the ludicrous Fraeye), at last I thought, Roland has hired an experienced a well regarded EFL manager, who will be able to build a proper L1 side to get promotion. He was quickly Charltonised...

When was Bowyer sacked by Montserrat? I can't find anything about that online.

Not sure if it was sacked or not but he left end of May

Bowyer was on TalkSport the morning after our recent win at Wembley & said he had left the Montserrat job due to financial cutbacks by them & was looking to get back into club management.

I'm of the opinion that Peeters getting the chop was more to do with problems at the training ground rather than results.

????????!!!
A few managers had there moments, Bob Peeters going for Steve Evans!

Parky kept us competitive.

Too easy of an answer.
But if we are to go down that road
1. Powell
2. Jones (can take top spot)
3. Bowyer

I like Robinson, a character. A shame we did not get any success with him.

How time flys.
I think out of that bunch, Jose Riga gets the number 1 spot.
He kept us up the 1st time around.
