I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that song is about him (and Julie Christie). It was written about two characters and, while Ray Davies said he could imagine them playing the parts if a film were to be made of the song, it wasn't strictly about them.
However, it's a magnificent song and if some people see it as a tribute to a great actor, then that's fitting.
I read earlier that he used to share digs with Michael Caine and they were often thought as a gay couple. Stamp disappeared for a few days and on his return Michael asked him where he’d been. ’Sleeping with all the wives and girlfriends of those who called us gay!’
