MATCH THREAD [+POST p18]: Charlton Athletic v Stevenage: Lge cup R1: Tues 12th Aug 2025: KO 19:45

Good evening one and all..
After the euphoria of Saturdays incredible last minute winner against Watford, tonight we return to The Valley for this R1 Carabao Cup match with Stevenage being the visitors.
Tonight we should see a slightly different side with some notable changes to the one that started, and indeed finished the Watford match, but with another important match next Saturday away at Bristol City, we need to stay fresh, I can see Mannion, Macca, & The Mitchells, (sounds like an episode of Eastenders 😉) making up the backline, with Knibbs and Kelman retaining their places, we will be without Reece Burke and Matty Godden, apart from that?...
Stevenage currently sit 5th in the League One table after an encouraging first two matches of their season resulted in wins, and will provide a test to our resolve, and we will need to be at our game clearly, so a strong(ish) bench will be needed, but at the same time whoever we put out tonight we should be more than capable of progressing into R2.

We've met on eight previous occasions, winning three, Boro two and the remaining three encounters resulting in draws, we ran out 2-0 victors when we last met at The Valley back in February, thanks to goals from Matty Godden and Luke Berry.

Team...

Zach Mitchell, Alex Mitchell and skipper Macaulay Gillesphey will start in a back three in front of Will Mannion.

Henry Rylah and Fullah will operate as wing-backs, with Karoy Anderson joining Knibbs and Rankin-Costello in midfield.

Olaofe is partnered up front by Miles Leaburn.

The Addicks' bench is made up of Ashley Maynard-Brewer, Josh Laqeretabua, Greg Docherty, Luke Berry, Alan Mwamba, Rob Apter, Kai Enslin, Charlie Kelman and Daniel Kanu.

Charlton: Mannion; Z.Mitchell, A.Mitchell, Gillesphey (c); Rylah, Knibbs, Rankin-Costello, Anderson, Fullah; Olaofe, Leaburn

Subs: Maynard-Brewer, Laqeretabua, Docherty, Mwamba, Berry, Apter, Enslin, Kelman, Kanu

One thing of note, we should see how the nice new Floodlights shape up, let's hope they have had a thorough testing eh...

    Team up later...

We won't, they have not been installed yet.
Well thanks for that clive, I will edit...

    ...Least I got ya a few LOL's...🤦‍♂️
  • When you play reserves, second team and unfancied players it’s not really a surprise we struggle to get past the second round

All cup competitions are going this way including the FA Cup, that’s why attendances are plummeting and teams are closing stands

Charlton Athletic’s last 10 seasons record in the League Cup

    24/25: 1st Round
    23/24: 1st Round
    22/23: Quarter Final
    21/22: 1st Round
    20/21: 2nd Round
    19/20: 1st Round
    18/19: 1st Round
    17/18: 2nd Round
    16/17: 1st Round
    15/16: 3rd Round

Not a favourite of ours this competition but you never know if a cup run could be on the offering this season
    Lord, that is absolutely appalling.

I doubt any team in the country of our standing can "better" that.
8 years out of 10 as a basket case league one club . 9 years out of 10 as a basket case club.  Seems about right .

I won’t bore everybody to death again but there used to be reserve league fixtures - theyre now called cup games
  • Do we make total changes, give the squad players and kids a go.  Then continue in that vein until the final when we bring the first teamers in for Wembley?

My guess is that we will have the nucleus of Saturday's starting 11. We need them to gel, and this could be a good opportunity on that road.

Even before that our record in the League Cupo was appalling. I think the year we played Wycombe in the quater finals (and lost!) there was a stat doing the rounds that we had something like the 4th worst overall record in the competition out of all 92 league clubs. We were Premier League at the time (although not for much longer!).
  • Watford again old ole

I want a full XI change

    Mannion
    Mitchell Mitchell Gillesphey
    Fullah Costello Anderson Enslin
    Knibbs
    Leaburn Olaofe

I got it very close in the end, only change is Rylah at RWB instead of Enslin playing...

    Mannion
    Mitchell Mitchell Gillesphey
    Rylah Costello Knibbs Anderson Fullah
    Leaburn Olaofe

  • Partly surprised to see Rylah involved, but really pleased for him, as he was excellent against Dartford
  • No Dixon, guessing he played for the U21s earlier

I think the only biggish club with a worse record than us is Brighton

  • Im surprised Jones has changed it up that much, I thought he would put out a hybrid team and at least start Kelman - who I would say needs the minutes.

Excited to see some of these players, especially Fullah, so I’m not grumbling.
  • The team could be exciting to see how we get on, hopefully a convincing 3-0 win.
  • Nice to see Mannion back fit

Gutting for @Braziliance that Piergianni only makes the bench for the visitors, former Addick Chem Campbell does start though
9 changes for Stevenage. Butler and Campbell only starters from their last game.
  • Tbf that’s not a bad line up we have had worse plenty of times in the league over the last few years
